I'm not a prs guy, so I have no experience with their hardware, but do you have a stop bar or trem? If you have a stop bar, you could probably test it out on the underside of that first.

That is exactly what I did! Worked great. I wouldn't do it regularly, but the guitar is 17 years old, so I figured doing it once every couple of decades would be fine. I also went super light, but it was enough to get things looking better. Guitar looks all shiny and new after that and giving the fretboard a nice oiling.

So...last band practice booth my amps died on me ,jcm 800 and Diezel vh4. On the same fucking day. The Jcm 800 had one hour on him after a 400€ repair and tube job. The Diezel ran for 4 years straight. I can't fuckin believe that shit.

I checked everything and the only difference that day to my usual set up was that I connected my pedalboard to the same outlet that my amp is on. That's it.

Now I can say that every tube amp I ever owned died on me, the jcm 800 twice. I take care of these fucks with warming up before use, I'm ocd about them being connected to a speaker (even put these plastic dummyplugs in not used ports so to not connected the speaker in the wrong spot by accident, have always had repair man change tubes etc.

Really thinking about repairing the amps, sell them and get a Fractal axe FX III. Im playing with in ears anyway. Fuck that shit.

Not a prs guy, but that is a beauty. Both of my Les Paul customs (2002, 2014) have varying wear across the plated hardware. I figured I could always just buy some replacement parts eventually. I'll keep the originals incase I go to sell them and someone pisses and moans about the hardware being non original, but that way I get to keep the gold hardware on them.

When I eventually get around to posting pics of my guitars, I'll have to remember to dig out the bridge that came on my first Les Paul. I played and gigged that thing so much that my sweat turned the damn bridge green. It was still functional, but not pretty. I replaced it with a callaham ABR 1.

I used to gig with my tube amp Fender Super Reverb but I've gone solid state with Orange CR120C cuz there's just been too many headaches with tubes. Plus tone can be inconsistent from start of gig until the end of the gig, or some venues just have shitty power outlets although I used a power conditioner. With the Orange I can just plug in and go and it sounds pretty damn good. Don't have to worry about tube failure during a gig. I do sometimes take the Fender out for special gigs, but most nights the Orange suffices.

You always need a good Solid State as a backup. In fact, the way solid state amps are getting, tubes will be virtually obsolete sooner than later. I say 'virtually' because guys like me in their 30's and older won't ever be convinced, even if we couldn't tell the difference in a blind test so easily anymore.

So, I'm surprised by the sound of my Big Muff Op-Amp reissue... I've had a lot of fuzz pedals in the past and this really doesn't share many of the characteristics of a fuzz. In fact, it feels like its own thing... not quite all fuzz, not quite distortion. I can't explain it. It's relatively quiet for a Big Muff, too. I had a Distortion pedal on my board but I'm afraid the Big Muff has rendered it obsolete. Still good to keep around if I want to boost it with an Tube Screamer and play metal, though, but I haven't been touching the distortion since I put in on my board. I'm afraid the next pedal I get, the trusty TCE Dark Matter is the first pedal to go, as I've warmed up to my Danelectro fat boi 9V chorus lately.

I actually like the Dark Matter. I think it sounds great on its own as a plug-n-play distortion. Just, I run a Boss Compressor before my tube screamer and that more or less renders distortion redundant now that I have a fuzz for warm leads.

Any tips on tuning a Floyd Rose tremolo? Broke a string and finally got around to restringing and didn't realize how hard it would be. I've tried to balance the tuning by starting in and going out but everything keeps going flat and then the tremelo is sticking way too far out. Getting annoyed by this but going to try again tomorrow after work...

It's quite easy if you're not changing string tension by changing "size" or brand of the strings etc. I would advice to tune the low e then the high e first, then the rest. You have to play with the springs in the back of the guitar. Tighten or release them as needed. They are after all the counter balance to the string tension. This process has to happen iterative. Tune stings adjust trem springs and do that loop until the strings stay in tune right where you need the term to sit. I would advice to tune a tad lower because putting the locking nuts at the nut at the end is going to tension the strings a tiny bit. Make sure you have the finetuners in the middle position to give you room to fine adjust after locking everything down.

Its a hassle no matter how you look at it but nothing stays in tune like a proper Floyd system.

After watching the JHS video on Behringer pedals, I decided to get their noise gate to see how they stack up. I figured a noise gate can't be all that hard to get right. What do you know, It gets the job done and looks surprisingly good. It's got a matte finish on the plastic. The downside, of course, being that it's plastic. Also, they accidentally sent me a whole box of them. So I went to my door (actually my neighbor's door, as he accidentally left it on their porch) I was like "Damn, this is a big box for a little plastic effect pedal..." and then I went, "damn, this box is pretty heavy for a little plastic pedal." Open it up, and there's a box inside with 6 of them.

Needless to say, I did the ethical thing and contacted Amazon to send it back. I don't need 6 noise gates, lol. Hell, I probably don't need ONE, if I'm honest.

Hi. I'm 22 and I've been playing guitar on and off for about a year, but only started taking it seriously recently. I have an Epiphone Casino Coupe and I usually play it unplugged. Just moved onto barre chords so I need to get those down. Also, I don't use a pick anymore. I'm learning to fingerpick (Rhiannon, Big Love and World Turning atm).

Any advice for a... guess I can't call myself a beginner now?

When learning, play something clean then play it fast. Don't let barre chords impede you from learning songs you want to play— there are non-barre voicings for every chord; barre chords just provide bigness (lots of notes) and convenience.

Why don't you play it plugged in more of the time?

Thanks. It is my favorite thing ever. I know you don't need such fancy shit to be a good guitarist and get sweet tones, but I do think it is important to have a guitar that you love so much you just want to pick it up all the time. This baby is definitely that for me. I actually remember these coming out back when I was in high school, and it was love at first sight. Of course, I couldn't afford one back then, but my ol' Epiphone Les Paul Custom served me well until I could.

I haven't actually played any of their more recent singlecuts. This one is from 2002, so it is an original Singlecut from before the Gibson lawsuit, and the 245s and the like. I have been curious to play a 245 or something like that with the shorter scale to see what I think. But, you just don't really see PRS stuff in a lot of shops.

Around here it is pretty rare to find any higher end gear at all in shops. I pretty much have two choices. A mom and pop place that is mostly dedicated to acoustics, and a pretty shitty Guitar Center. My friend was shopping for an acoustic a few weeks ago and we spent a couple of hours at the pop place where we both fell in love with a Taylor 418 they had. We decided we might as well check out Guitar Center before he dedicating to buying it. We walked into Guitar Center, walked a circle right in and right out without picking up a single guitar. Was seriously nothing but junk.

I love the 24.5" scale length. Last few guitars I've purchased came from the internet— an early '80s Greco LP copy from Japan and an Eastman acoustic on the other side of the country. There's both large and small shops around here that I like and have bought from in the past, but as my tastes have become more esoteric (well made Asian guitars) they don't really suffice. Also haven't purchased any new guitars since 2011 (contentment is awful).

It's not broken, I just don't like the way amplified guitars sound. I did some messing around today and found a setting I like.

after not playing for like 5 years (before that, I again didn't play for like 5 years...) I really want to pick up the guitar for good.
While I still know to play some stuff like Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, a bit of Stairway to Heaven and some other classic guitar stuff, I feel like I need to somehow start at the beginning.

Could you recommend me something like 20 songs, from pure beginner to advanced ? I'd play each song until I master it completely until I start the next song.
Basically a walkthrough on zero to (guitar) hero :D

Of the 2, RV-6, because I like Boss's reverbs more than TC, and Boss stuff is always quality. But unless you need stereo, I'd go for the EHX Oceans 11 before either of them - tons of features, great sound. Best verb in this price range, IMO.

I'm looking for a Reverb with more experimental and outrageous possibilities. My amp has a built-in Spring reverb that sounds pretty good (Fender HRD) so I was leaning toward TCE because of the wide range and versatility. Although, that EHX pedal has incredible versatility, and my experiences with EHX have been pretty good.

If I get the Boss, I know I'll have a pedal that will last me as long as I treat it reasonably. I have a Japanese phaser that's older than me that I could have been convinced was 20 years newer than it was. It's a tough choice...

I've been watching comparison videos, and I think Oceans 11 won me over. The effects are not the most natural sounding, but they're so dynamic. How are EHX as far as reliability goes? I've only had an EHX pedal for about 2 months now, so I have no frame of reference.

Neither company makes absolute tanks like BOSS, but I'd say EHX has a better reliability (and willingness to repair/honor warranties) rep than TC. This is just my observations from following the pedal world for the past 10+ years.

Got the pedal on your recommendation. Really functional and at the same time, far-out. Full-wet Shimmer might be one of the coolest guitar effects out there. Sounds like an electric organ, but with a ethereal quality.

Is it wrong I'm actually thrilled they took the binding off the Les Paul Studio necks? I hated it. I like having the option for players who like a more stripped-down look. It might be an unpopular opinion, but the Ebony LP Studio is one of the best looking GIbsons they make in my opinion.

there's definitely room for and a need for that stripped down bare bones rocker. I am flirting with getting the single pup double cut as something to just toss around and let it get beat to shit and have character. though I am a pretty standard Les Paul appointments kinda guy.

Binding is one of those things you don't realize you want until you get it. When I got my SG Standard about 15 years ago when I was a teen, I didn't have an opinion on it. I didn't even think about the fact it would have binding. Then when I saw it, it was the first most striking part thing about it. As time goes on, it has aged to like an ivory/white-chocolate color that's awesome.

That thing plays better than the day I got it and I think it'll always be my #1.

I am curious to see how the next couple of years go for Gibson. Shit is looking good right now. But, I think a lot of us are quick to root for a comeback. Hope it really goes that way. Some of those Les Pauls in the Anderton's video look fucking nice.

My only problem with Gibson is it seems like all their effort goes into Les Pauls, and their other models don't get much love. Though then again I bet LP's are a huge portion of their sales.

The 60's Unburst color is fucking nice. I wish they had the kluson tuners instead of grovers though. The colors on the 50s spec don't quite do it for me. I am also a tiny bit annoyed by their pseudo lie about the guitars having ABR-1 bridges. Technically the bridge piece is a stamped ABR-1, but the post is still in a stud in the body (Nashville style bridge) and not directly screwed into the body like a true ABR-1.

Yeah they sell a lot of LPs but the SG Standard is the best selling Gibson of all time. They're a bit cheaper compared to LPs so that makes sense.

I've heard that. The SG is the best selling model... yet they offer basically 2 standard colors. What's weird is I love the full pickguard, but I hate the half-pickguard. It makes that big of a difference to me, visually. Full pickguard is 10/10, half is like 4/10 for me.

If you crank up the FX level on this pedal, it takes the dry signal completely out. You can get some incredible ambient and experimental sounds. I like the shimmer with full wetness. It sounds like a low-fi organ. (sorry for poor recording, I used direct-in from my practice amp)

Hey that sounds pretty cool! Reminds me of the Strymon BlueSky reverb pedal I had. I sold it cuz I already have an old Alesis Quadraverb and didn't have much use for it.

I have several SGs, both with the full and half pickguard. I personally prefer the smaller pickguard - more wood and less plastic.

They're a great way to get into the DIY pedal hobby and, assuming they're built correctly, will sound more or less just like the thing they're a clone of. If you're willing to put in the extra effort, it should be fun.

My old man guitar group has a gig next Monday. Like 14 or so 3 chord songs, its messed up how much I'm enjoying this. I'm a total metal guy but getting off my ass and forcing me to play a completely different way is really good for my playing.

I'm gonna sign up for the next round.
I've never really tried singing and playing, well, in public, but this is jumping off the deep end Haha.

My goal is to become more confident and play open mics on my own, like acoustic versions of metal songs (my love lol) and I'm well on my way!

Switch it up, get out of your comfort zone, you'll love it .. just like me ( and I'm a grumpy old man that hates everything)

Definitely getting out of your comfort zone is a great way to keep it interesting. I play in a cover band every weekend and we play tons of songs I totally despise, but it's what the audience wants. We've played some of our favorites that are more musically challenging but they rarely go over with the crowd, so we go right back to the 3 chord standards and people get up to dance. As a bar band ultimately our job is to sell drinks or we won't be called back. Which basically means we get the girls to dance and the guys to buy drinks. I may move onto something else in the near future but for now it's good extra money to buy gear!

I picked up a Fender Mustang GT200 for $199 used at guitar center last week. I'm not sure why they priced is so low. It has the footswitch and after 5 minutes of tinkering, it's connected to my phone, on WiFi, and on the latest firmware. I have a few small tube amps (monoprice, bassbreaker 15, tweed blues jr, and a Marshall origin 5c) and this offers a different user experience. I guess initially there were some problems with this series, but it seems like they've been worked out. Messing with the built in looper and streaming backing tracks are already improving my playing.

Most guitar players have sold a guitar only to regret it later. Back in 2010, I sold my goldtop with p90s to fund my travels. It worked out good in the end (met my wife and our second kid is coming along soon), but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss that guitar. Trouble is, finding one just like it without stumping up for a reissue has been tough. I picked up a Pelham blue classic with p90s last year to fill the void, but I still miss that goldtop. I have to get one of these new 50s goldtops with p90s. Trouble is, do I sell the Pelham blue classic or do I save up longer? I want the goldtop asap, but I would love to stick a staple pickup in the neck position of the Pelham blue classic, since a 54 reissue custom is pricey as hell and hard to come by. First world problems.

I agree that it's essential to keep the studio line barebones and as affordable as possible, but I have to disagree with the rest. Binding makes a guitar look a lot classier.

When it's bone-white, I don't really like it. However, when it ages to that white-chocolate ivory color, ooh wee. GIbson guitars are the shit. Mine is 16 years old and it's better than the day I got it.

Although I've heard of people getting Gibson to honour them before, so it may just depend on what kind of relationship your dealer has with Gibson.
