Preach. One of the most iconic and scenic shopping districts in the world and its filled with cheap shite.

So glad to be living in Glasgow now, but even here, the tartan tat has begun creeping onto places like Argyle Street and Sauchiehall Street. I guess rents are absolutely knock-down cheap for the moment because of online shopping, so these kinds of shops survive, even if its rare for anyone native to go in, just the odd tourist.

The worst shit is the pipe band music they blare 24-7. I love some good pipe band stuff but it just sends my internal Scottish cringe to a whole new level going past one of those shops.

I'm not sure if it'll make things any better, but something was just passed to allow a third of the storefronts along Princes Street to become a restaurant or bar. It'll at least bring some much needed change to the street and hopefully see a few of those tartan tat places fuck off.

That the old BHS? I moved away from Edinburgh a year ago now. I remember one of those tat magnates tried opening up a megastore in it but it seemed to bite the dust pretty quickly, and the place was just left derelict.

The worst I experienced was when I ordered 'chips' in DC, thinking I'd get fries (yeah I know I should have known), and got given a small basket of crisps (maybe half a bag's worth?). They charged me 10 USD for it lmao

I think that old BHS is under renovation but I have no idea what it's becoming. It wouldn't surprise me if it was some Amazon thing.

I went into a Barnes and Noble and checked the price of a book I was interested in buying against a new copy on Amazon. On Amazon it was $25, at the store it was $45. Is there really a reason for that great of a price difference?

here
Fat4all would you pay that much for cheetos if you had too?
aint no way i'd pay 12 bucks for Flamin' Hot unless they were rare or exclusive or super cool looking

these just plain ass normal Flamin' Hot Cheetos, not even Puffs

as an aside:

do bags of crisps in the UK list a suggested retail price? i think thats common in the US, most 8 oz bags suggested price is like 4 bucks or sommit but most stores sell for less

I just visited Edinburgh for the Fringe like a week ago and didn't notice any blatant price gouging except for the hotel prices.

The prices seemed quite comparable to York. Or maybe the bar prices were a tad higher.

Yes, I have. I recently went to a concert and a very small slice of pizza was $7.00, popcorn was $6.50 and a small box (yes box) of water was $4.00.

Those food import stores are crazy expensive all year around, not just at festival time.

If anyone's stupid enough to pay a tenner for a bag of Cheetos then I guess that's on them 🤷🏻‍♂️

Fucking XQD Cards. Pricing is absolute insanity and im forced to buy them on the new Nikon cameras.

A 240 GB card will run you 700 DOLLARS after tax.

4 Pounds is just under $5 USD.

I paid almost $7 for a canned Rockstar in Vegas last month :(

Don't buy things from the hotel gift shop when you're in Vegas. Only but things from the ABC Store, Walgreens, or CVS.

That way you pay convenience store prices instead of "stealing yo' money" prices.

I was at a casino (Aria) but had to get to my conference, so no "free drink" from a tender for playing some video poker

Like for you, there's that CVS directly to the south of the CityCenter complex that would have worked.

I know, just had to grab some form of caffeine on the way to the conference area, zero chance to hit the CVS that morning

Los Angeles
Healthcare and housing (in major cities) in America is pretty laughable.

Also, vintage furniture stores in Los Angeles.

Most food and drink at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. I'm pretty I saw a 250ml Red Bull there for €4.00.

To a lesser extent, most stuff in the Netherlands tends to be overpriced.

I didn't know Monster was a specifically Scottish thing, or even a British thing. I can go to Tesco down the road and get it a can for a quid.

In Dublin the average pint is maybe €5-€7 euro, but if you go in the tourist pubs they'll charge up to €15 for 'real Irish Guinness'

The monster pricing isn't that crazy compared to prices in Canada - usually between $2-4. The Cheetos price is absurd though.

In terms of retail mark-up and paying ridiculous amounts of money for materials worth a small fraction of the cost, I'd give this one to designer fashion or diamond jewelry. Say a pair of Gucci sunglasses for example. Pay $50 for the glasses and $950 for the logo.

I was going to make SUPREME joke but 10 pounds for a bag of cheetos is worse.
