People will come around to it once they fully realize what's on offer here. This is the "Netflix killer" imo.
I think when you combine this with Disney+ together, that combination will muscle out Netflix assuming people are willing to pay the price that it costs to have both. That combo is a hell of a lot of content that will appeal to a family. It's really going to be interesting to see how Netflix losing a lot of content will expose if their own content is good enough to stand on its own or not. I'm thinking it's not in the long run.

It's cheaper because they have a smaller range of content.
As they should with a much more limited range of content.

I know they have more overall. I'm still surprised they are willing to go that much higher just out of a competition sense. Disney could absolutely get away with charging more than they are, but that didn't stop them from going that low because they want to undercut.

HBO Max has far more appeal to a larger demographic. At&T already have 10m people willing to pay that much just for HBO.

So Disney has 5000 hours of content? Has anyone actually measured it (or at least what we know of it)?

I'm just spitballing on the Disney stuff, but I think I'm close.
The half comment is based on assuming an even split between half-hour (22 minutes) and hour (44 minutes) for TV episodes and an average movie length of about an hour and forty minutes.

read it again

ost a hefty $14.99 per month, which is more than the $12.99 per month it costs for a standard Netflix plan. Current HBO subscribers via AT&T and DirecTV, along with HBO Now subscribers, will have immediate access to HBO Max at no extra charge. Also, an ad-supported version of HBO Max (price TBD) is also planned to launch in 2021. The company has not said whether an annual subscription rate will be made available.

You will get access to Max if you already subscribe to HBO Now or DTV. This implies two different products

edit: just saw verges breakdown of the UI showing HBO https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/29...ermedia-disney-netflix-launch-date-ui-gallery

this wording around costs reads weird

edit 2: and now I see it below a fold, ok I was wrong

Do we know if Titans is going to on this service? Also I see crunchyroll... I'm guessing that means the whole of crunchyroll? (not a limited version like I think VRV had of funimation)

This sounds pretty great if so.

If Doom Patrol is making the jump to HBO Max, I'd imagine that Titans will soon follow.

Yeah, it doesn't help that all their hit shows are already ended or ending. They need something like The Witcher to really hit it big... But will it?

It's the current price for HBO except it's way more than just HBO. And there's no ads. It's a great deal imo. And a cheaper ad supported version is coming later too. As it stands it's barely more expensive than Netflix.

EDIT:

Important to note, we don't yet have a full list of what exactly will be on the service day one, and likely won't until much closer to the launch date in May. But it's safe to say most things from under these various brands will be there.
We need to get this picture in the OP so people won't think that the service is just HBO and nothing more.

To think, the combined effort of Disney+ & HBO Max will be what deals a major blow to Netflix.

I won't just keep it auto subbed all the time like Netflix, but I will be using this a lot. There's so many Ghibli films I haven't seen yet. Excited.

From barrons:

Despite having approximately twice the content, HBO Max will cost $14.99 a month, the same price as HBO alone costs today. All 34 million current HBO subscribers will get access to the new service once it launches at no extra charge. It will also be included in premium and unlimited AT&T mobile plans, TV, and broadband bundles at no extra charge and come with the app preloaded on AT&T-branded set-top boxes and Android phones.

That's not really it though. Netflix has relied on content from Warner Bros and Disney for years. Now they won't have that crutch anymore to use to their advantage. It's not that HBO Max and Disney+ has a combined effort to go up against Netflix; it's that Netflix is losing a lot of their content.

HBO really have a lot of the best shows on TV right now, too. Barry, Succession, The Righteous Gemstones, Watchmen is off to a strong start. I still can't believe how much money Apple spent on The Morning Show.

I see. Though another thing I noticed is that Toonami is mentioned, meaning that JoJo & One Punch Man will likely be on HBO Max. Will Netflix lose JoJo & One Punch Man as well (seeing as it already has Parts 1 & 2 of JoJo for both sub & dub as well as the sub of Season 1 for OPM)?

Midgar, With Love
I'll keep an eye out for projects with as much acclaim as Chernobyl and whenever House of Dragons launches. At present, I'm not sure I need this.

This will be the service that kills Netflix, not Disney +

No one service is going to kill Netflix. Everyone reclaiming their content and not licensing it to Netflix is what is likely what's going to hurt Netflix in the end and that would be all the companies out there reclaiming content, not just one company.

Unless Netflix owns it, they're likely to lose it. It does really depends on who owns the rights to the IP and if they have the means to have their own streaming service. If not, they'll license their content and it'll depend on who wants to license said content at that point. But any content that a streaming service owns the IP to, you can bet they're going to leverage that for their own service instead of licensing it out to the competition.

I don't see the appeal of this at all. A whole bunch of old shows and classic movies?

Any original content at all? (only thing I've seen is the new adventure time eps)

All of the current and upcoming HBO shows like the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, Lovecraft Country, The Gilded Age, etc. + new originals just for MAX, yes, including Tokyo Vice directed by Michael Mann, a DUNE spin-off series from Villeneuve, a Green Lantern series, a Gremlins animated series, and more.

So basically if you already subscribe to HBO the content you receive will increase exponentially for the same price? That sounds like a great win.

Ok - I dont give a rip about HBO shows, I already have it. (So I guess I already get max?)

Is there a list of Max exclusives anywhere?

Have you heard of the channel called "HBO"?

The existing service is just getting massive, huge expansion. The service is generally just getting massive expansion, for free, to try to compete in the same space as Netflix and Disney+.

So basically if you already subscribe to HBO the content you receive will increase exponentially for the same price? That sounds like a great win.

Yup, I'm pleased.

NBCUniversal also has Peacock incoming though it is kind of half-assed compared to Disney Plus and HBO Max, less marketing, less old content, less new content, less exclusivity, and ad-supported. At the moment Comcast is hesitant to put all their chips in like Disney and AT&T are doing because licensing out their library is safer than hoarding back all their content onto its own service, but if their 2 biggest rivals succeed they will be to follow their lead. If that happens Netflix will only have Paramount and Sony media to buy among the majors.
