Not only was that first episode fantastic the preview makes the rest of the show look like an epic clusterfuck. Goddamn.

My old man was intrinsically involved with the detection and handling of the fallout from this event over here in good ol' Germany. I think I'd love to watch this with him once it gets localized.

Are there any plans to bring this to an international audience? I personally don't have a problem with English, but my dad is getting on in the years and probably won't be all that enthusiastic about some random english movie series.

Looks like the GoT CGI budget went to this show. Gorgeous! The shot of the exposed core, and the smoke billowing on the roof. Wow. I just wanted to check some scenes again but ended up rewatching the whole episode.

This shit is insane. These fucking big wig morons trying to rationalize and come up with scientific explanations when people's faces are melting off in front of them is really fucked up. Forcing one of the engineers to go to the roof after he just told you he saw graphite on the ground is totally evil

So many little details. Definitely doing a second watch once it wraps.

Is it known what time scale it is going to cover overall? I can make a few guesses by the episode titles.

Is the Dyatlov here the same one related to the Dyatlov Incident? EDIT: Nope.

STALKER had Call Of Pripyat, so this is making me think of the game now.

This looks so good... and so terrifying.
It feels like watching a train wreck in slomo, the constant dread is there and it's just going to get worse.

I was expecting to see gifs of that fiery thing burning like some supernatural force. What was that?
It was the melted nuclear core after it had literally burned right through its containment vessel and dropped through the floor to a lower level.

It was the physical manifestation of death itself. It will remain death itself for several thousand years to come.

I looked up Craig Mazin's previous body of work when I wrapped up this first episode and i'm in total disbelief.

Haha, I feel that, but I've been listening to him on Scriptnotes for a while and he's a damned fun and smart guy. And I like The Hangover and the sequels have their moments...but yeah, not the greatest resume.

The last time I heard him talk about a project on that podcast, prior to Chernobyl, was with Identity Thief. He said something akin to "they didn't shoot the movie I wrote" and it really got to him. It's cool to see him maybe breaking out here, and it's with a ton of creative control, too.

That was pretty good. I will say I probably should have watched tbe first 30 minutes with subtitles because it kinda just dropped you in to the plant which was effective cinematically but made it hard to tell exactly what was going on because of the names.

Also it's weird to me that it's a historical drama in Russia and some main characters have british accents

I loved the 1st episode, when I saw the trailer, I thought aliens were gonna be causing some shit, so happy it was a dramatization inspired by real events!!

They said some episodes will go into more detail as to what was actually happening in the first episode. I like how little information we got because so much was still being communicated.

Re: accents, I've heard this from a few people, but it really doesn't bother me, for the same reasons they mentioned: too many actors act the accent and not the character. So instead of having to worry about a dozen different takes on Boris/Natasha, just let the actors act naturally. Mazin says he did feel, however, that an American accent would throw it off, so they stuck to European accents.

It does feel like straight up horror at moments.

I can't be the only one who felt kind of queasy after watching. Radiation is fucking hell (and we're not even to the really bad parts yet).

Effectively at gunpoint, at that.

Yeah all the party/office politics involved in the disaster are really crazy.

I would have been fine with Russian with subtitles, personally, but I understand that is an equally contentious decision.

It definitely punctuates the hell out of that phone call at least.

Casting for this is incredible so far. Really sad when you look up the wiki and see the fate of them.

Part of the reason Craig Mazin said he wanted to do a podcast is because he felt that, since the entire show is about the power of narrative and how it manipulates people, he wanted to get right out the gate what they were faithful too, what was slightly altered, and what they compressed/condensed.

Also wild to me that there is still fear of Socialism in the US when our Democracy feels more like the Soviet Union sometimes (when it comes to blatant spread of misinformation/false narratives).

Major kudos to the VFX team as well. The wide shots of the actual plant while it was on fire were visually incredible.

I don't expect Adam Nagaitis to last very long in this show, but really glad to see him continue to get good work.

Yeah, this sequence stunned me.

Nagaitis is so damn good but it's looking like he'll die from radiation within a couple of episodes. I hope we get him and Harris onscreen together somehow for a Terror callback.

This was thankfully really good. I've been psyched about it since it was first announced, and that opening episode was sufficiently terrifying and full of human idiocy.

Also, I look forward to eventually buying Hildur Guðnadóttir's score whenever Deutsche Grammophon releases it.

Russia is fucking insane, during those days they would rather send their own people to die and lie to them than risk the outside world knowing they fucked up. That's what the officials screaming about the engineers being wrong is about, they couldn't accept their own stupidity and failure or even the idea that they made mistakes. Absolute madness, no doubt its still the same today.

This made me feel claustrophobic just watching. It's been awhile since a piece of media just made me re evaluate if I have the strength to muster through how dark and grim it is.

Gonna be even more wild in the next episodes.

Elsewhere for 8 minutes
Beautiful, haunting start though the wide range of accents was a little grating at times, especially the curly haired guy in the bunker that directed the guy onto the roof. Loved the explosion scene at the start viewed from far away through the apartment window.

So I don't know if it's something on my end, but it appears Comcast has no interest in adding this show to the on demand offerings.

Looks amazing but my girlfriend is from the Ukraine and will likely spend the initial watching complaining about British actors and/or terrible Russian/Ukie accents.

Am just listening to the podcast. They let everyone use their own accents to avoid any awful Eastern European accents and to allow the actors to concentrate on performance.
