The show's intent certainly wasn't to demonize nuclear power. Deaths directly contributed to coal-related illness, compared to radiation is undoubtedly lopsided.

Hmm, just watched the third ep, not sure that I want to continue. The lying for drama reasons is too much now. I mean, radiation victims are infected now? Shit, I thought this was supposed to be a documentary style, not straight up fiction. The dilapidated look if literally everything as well was off from the start. It's starting to veer a bit too much into propaganda territory for me, because the creators must be well aware of what they're doing.

Radioactive dust and ash coat clothes and they are breathed in. Furthermore, biological pathways cause absorption of atoms like radioactive iodine and cesium. So yeah, the person and the objects they wear are radioactive.

Also this is not a documentary, it's a docudrama. Docudramas are fiction based on real events. Compromises have to be made for narrative and time purposes. You should listen to the show's official podcast, they talk about some of the compromises and why they made them.

It's also interesting how the camera would fixate on the characters' chain-smoking while worrying about the radiation that would eventually kill them from cancer.

What are you talking about? Like the firefighters? Their clothes were bathed in radioactivity. Look up YT vids of their clothes. The firefighter uniforms were piled in the hospital basement in real life and still emit radiation right now.

How one can watch Chernobyl and come away with the take that it is propaganda is beyond me.

I've been thinking about this show a lot and I realized that I liked it so much because it's basically a Lovecraftian horror. Dyatlov, the plant manager, and the creepy Lenin guy are like the townie fish people from Call of Cthulhu. Dyatlov's ineptitude is so immense that it feels like he is intentionally trying to make the reactor blow, which is like summoning some kind of Elder God. Then he sacrifices unbelievers to it by sending them in to the core, which is so powerful that just the sight of it drives them insane and melts their faces.

Dyatlov brings to mind the climate change denialists we have in office in the US. An army of Dyatlovs leading us to doom

I think you should do a little research before deciding what's accurate and what isn't.

It's like: Think about it for a second... Why is there an "exclusionary zone?" An entire area became "infected" with radiation, is why.

Edit: lol Era was acting weird earlier. Probably e3 traffic. Made some post errors.

Radioactivity, how does it work?

Final episode was great. I'm a big friend of unlikely friendships, and the arc of Boris and Valery's relationship was the strongest aspect of the show. To see them both change during the five episodes was both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

Seriously !!! you know there is a reason why they put the dead bodies of the firefighters in a wooden box, then a zinc casket welded shut followed by covering the zinc caskets with several tons of cement and it wasn't for shits and giggles.

The fire-fighters where heavily radioactive and they will remain heavily radioactive for thousands of years. Now sure the hospital will have removed some of the contamination but the fire-fighters were exposed to that much they couldn't be completed decontaminated.

As for the dilapidated look I don't believe that was propaganda at all. This was not a normal hospital this was a hospital designated to treat radiation related illnesses as such it probably wasn't that well funded since there probably wasn't much call for a hospital with that kind of specialisation. Infact I would go as far to say the hospital was probably partially mothballed due to inactivity until Chernobyl happened.

The only exaggerations regarding the fire-fighters condition is down to speed. The victims suffered a few weeks of illness but the portrayal in the show felt a bit quicker than that due to obvious time constraints.

Also wtf at criticizing the look of the show? This show is a titan of set design, costume design, and cinematography.

Cant wait to get it on Blu or 4K.

Let me guess. You don't think the radiation went above 3.4 routgen?

Dude this stuff has been pretty thoroughly fact checked. There's some exaggeration going on but not to the detriment of the facts. What kind of lies and propaganda are you espousing this show is pushing?

Because they're just trying to get a rise out of people. They don't actually believe what they're saying. Or if they do, they're ignorant. You can fact check all of this stuff.

I don't use terms like 'masterpiece' often, but this certainly is.

Some things are changed around to give you a better glimpse at the big picture, but some of it was actually worse than what is portrayed in the show.

It's a masterfully weaved propaganda piece to brainwash Americans into thinking that a nation that collapsed 30 years ago had some bad beuracracy issues.

Well, guess I look like a fool now. Shouldn't have taken that Forbes article at face value. Checked what y'all wrote and I was wrong about the radioactive firefighters. I guess they just inhaled a huge amount of radioactive particles? It's hard to imagine that it could have been so much that they would need to be buried in lead caskets, how much radiation were they emitting? How much did it contribute to their death, aside from the radiation they absorbed on site?

It's annoying that they're not clear about it in the show -- the difference between radioactive particles being spread, and just plain radioactivity is rarely made. I do really think this show will contribute to fear mongering because it's just not on the ball regarding ELI5 science. The atomic bullets explanation was just... not good.

As for the documentary part, I just got out from watching When they see us and it's on a whole nother level "docudrama" wise. the faithfulness to the actual events makes it that much more impactful. All these changes to Chernobyl to dramatize it, they feel so unnecessary. There's enough actual stories with plenty of drama to tell, why shove in a bunch of fiction in there? Disappointed by that.

The bullet explanation is fine. You can get hit with bullets being radiated and/or you can inhale material with bullets radiating from it.

They go over this later, but the area around the exposed reactor was so radioactive that being in that vicinity for longer than 90 seconds could have significant detrimental health effects, 2 minutes could cut your lifespan in half, and 3 minutes could be fatal. And that's if you're in full protective gear. The firefighters went in there fully exposed and stayed there until they started vomiting or passing out.

Airborne particles that drifted across borders were still radioactive enough to set off alarms at nuclear facilities in Sweden. There were enough radioactive particles on the firefighters' clothing to necessitate the disposal of that clothing in the hospital basement, forever. It's not a stretch to say that some of them inhaled enough particles to remain permanently dangerous themselves; they were buried in zinc and concrete to prevent contamination, after all.

Reactor contains radioactive materials.

Anything near it (or even within hundreds of kilometres in this case) becomes radioactive to an extent - whether delivered by sheer proximity or contamination by drifting radioactive material. (I'm not sure about your confusion between radiation and radioactive particles - it's one and the same.)

In a person who has received a high enough dose it is damaging to those around them. And for a long time after they're gone, hence the burial.

It's hard to comprehend at first but it is true and not a dramatisation. It actually happened.

There are differences though. Neutrons and radioactive particles carry the danger of contamination. Alpha, Beta, and Gamma Particles will cause damage, but not contaminate.
