What is Hearthstone?
Hearthstone is a free-to-play online Collectible Card Game (F2POCCG, which is a real genre) from Blizzard, based on the Warcraft universe. Choose a hero corresponding to one of the nine classes in Vanilla WoW and create a deck using their signature mechanics to fight other players in Casual or Ranked matchmaking. Earn Gold for every three wins and use the Gold to buy booster packs in order to expand your card pool, or use the Gold to purchase a ticket to the Arena where you construct your own deck on the fly using a random pool of all cards in the game. There is no offline play, but there are singleplayer adventure modes.

Download the client (Windows, Mac) on the main site. Note, you will also need a Blizzard account to log in to their launcher.

How to play Hearthstone?
I'm not going to go into that here, just play the tutorial to learn the game.

How to really play Hearthstone?
Read articles, apply critical thinking, watch good streamers.

Is there an in-game/player-driven economy?
No. There is no card trading or buying cards from other players and there probably won't be anytime in the foreseeable future. In its place is a crafting system. You can disenchant cards you do not want for arcane dust. You can then use that arcane dust to craft cards you do want.

Is this game Pay2Win?'
Of a sort. The thing you should know about Hearthstone is that if you're not going to pay money, plan on playing a lot (read: grinding) or becoming really good at Arena. The longer a player has played, the bigger their card pool will be. This means that an older, frequent player will always have better cards than a newer player. This is just an unavoidable part of collectible card games.

A paying player can save a lot of time by buying boosters, but it's not cheap and they're not guaranteed the best of the best cards, which is, in the end, what separates good decks from the best decks. Buying some boosters right off, however, will help you build a foundation to reliably win games in order to get Gold.

If you really hate not having good cards, then stick to Arena, which is a "level" playing field for a certain definition of "level".

Le Reddit Guide - Probably the best place to start if you're totally new.
Trump Teachings - A video series by one of the game's most notable streamers. This is essentially Hearthstone 101 and is mandatory viewing for any new player looking for a crash course in Hearthstone strategy.
Liquid Hearth's Beginner Guides - Some of the info is outdated but the general ideas remain the same.
Three Competing Resources Parts 1, 2, 3 - A series of articles on "resources" in the context of a card game, which goes well beyond just mana.

ResetEra Hearthstone Discord Server

Official Forums - A veritable nest of QQ and cries for nerf, just like your WoW days!
Team Liquid's Hearthstone Portal - Better place to discuss and learn about Hearthstone, frequently featuring competitive analysis and deck tech articles.
IHearthU - Another good site for high level Hearthstone discourse.
Hearthpwn and Managrind - Part of the Curse family of gaming sites, not only does it have an online database of cards and deck building tool, it is also home to ManaGrind, one of the premiere Hearthstone tournaments!
Hearthstone Wiki - Obligatory game wiki.
HearthArena - This website will help you out while drafting for arena. You enter the three cards you are presented for each pick and the tool will attempt to recommend you the best pick based on a general tier list and your current deck.
Gutshot's Hearthstone Collection Spreadsheet - You can use this to keep track of your current card collection.

Amaz: YouTube, Twitch - Over the top reactions. Says "That's a card". Constructed and arena.
Brian Kibler: YouTube, Twitch - High level, very professional streamer. Former MTG Champion. Doesn't usually play meta-decks. Constructed-only.
Disguised Toast: YouTube, Twitch - Variety video content and fun streaming.
Dog: YouTube, Twitch - Popular, chill stream.
Hafu: Youtube, Twitch - Very high level arena play.
Kolento: YouTube, Twitch - Very high level stream.

I haven't saved any gold for the next expansion. I'll starting to fall behind again :(

I hope we get more free arenas in the future. I can't imagine starting fresh at this point. Dual classes are great as well.

quick heads up for those who want to save some money on the next expansion.

Right now amazon has the $50 coin bundle at $40, that means you can buy those coins now and buy the upcoming expansion preorder at $40. a nice 20% off.

Didn't want to bother for a discord invite since I was getting in through the WoW community and I haven't been playing HS much lately, but glad to see many of the people I recognize here.

I tried playing again recently but sadly discovered games were still incredibly long, like 20+ minutes.

Everyone (maybe with one exception) I faced in Arena had the Warlock power too. I went against a Priest with 1x Greater Healing Potion, 2x Dragonfire, 1x Hellfire, 1x Defile, a Faceless Behemoth, and a card that cloned the Faceless Behemoth. It went to fatigue.

I'll probably still play occasionally, and I hope next meta shifts the playtime back down to 10-15 minutes per game.

blizzcon starts next friday, nov. 3rd through nov 4th. on Nov 3rd we will see the next HS expansion.

Got this from the free pack they were giving out. Pack right before this had Golden Nozdormu in it. Never thought I'd get two goldies in a row.

We in fam! First, I want to send a huge shout out to Zealous D, Levi, and the rest of the mod team on the HS-Discord. You really spearheaded the transition and made as smooth at it could be considering the circumstances.

Second: The Light shall burn you!

Made a gnarly ass DK paladin deck for Standard. Trying to see where I can make some edits for it.

Rank 14. Wanna see if I can be last season's record of eleven and hit the single digits

Good to be here with yall. Thanks for the effort everyone put in.

Now to talk hearthstone.. is there any way to obtain the new warlock skin without actually attending a fireside gathering?

Now that things are starting to run again, I wonder if ZealousD could add Omni/ channel to the videos and vods part. Pretty good stuff, especially Zalae's Know Your Enemy videos, and the weekly vidcast is good stuff too.

I was having the most trouble with Cat in this brawl. Other two I got in one shot but with Cat I failed twice and just gave up.

Are you seeing much variety? When I played every opponent but 1 had the warlock power, which I assume is a common choice because it gets you board clear cards + free draw.

Yep lots of Something/Warlock

Once you get to about 6 wins it is just completely random because everyone will have something broken * 2.
It is fun in its way, but it feels like playing brawl where you end up just shrugging and saying "well that happened". This is good in brawl, not so good in arena.
Some highlights:
* 5-0 complete control, mage plays Warlock death knight and brings back all the demons :|
* 6-1 Mage plays ultimate infestation. Next turn, double fireball to face from the cards drawn.
* 6-2 Mage clears my board, as Mage's do. Next turn, I face Jaraxxus.

Gold for streamers I suppose.

I feel like with refinement it could be something. But it would require a lot of effort and I'm not sure Blizzard wants to do that... even though I think it would be good for the game.

I've barely played Hearthstone this month. Maybe I'll try to hit rank 5, but I'm still down at like 13 for now.
