Well, it's not exactly hell, but it takes place really close to it.

Yeah definitely, and that was before it was given a name (wikipedia says the term was coined in 2005). Just something intrinsically unsettling about all those little holes.

I also like Dante's Inferno's version of gluttony.

Sadly the in-game version wasn't able to reach the level of the magnificently creepy concept art:

Something about those flat humanoid teeth makes it creepier than if they were pointed and more "dangerous". Kind of like how those slightly humanoid features Frampt has make him creepier than if he were more snake-like with sharp teeth or fangs.

Except for the actual ones you go to in TESIV.

The descriptions of all of the others sound really cool, but TESIV just gives you generic fiery hellscapes. That was pretty disappointing.

i dunno, the shivering isles were pretty fantastic, reminded me of the seelie and unseelie courts. definitely a very beautiful, alien, and frightening world.

900316-181127_si_12b.jpg

calling the oblivion realms 'hell' is a bit of a stretch, though. they're not really like that.

Yeah, the various Oblivion gate set pieces in TES IV aren't presented as being Hell, though they are a hellscape being that they're the realm belonging to the Daedric Lord of Destruction.

I think a closer analogy to Hell in TES IV would be
Mankar Camoran's paradise realm. A place of lush beauty, but only for Mankar and his family. The souls of all of his cult followers are tortured for eternity.

Painkiller's final level was Hell envisioned as an endless battle in various time periods frozen in time with a nuclear bomb stuck in mid-detonation.

what the fuck this sounds incredible? Is the game any good?

OP: Did you see the new game in dev from the Oxenfree team? Called Afterparty and takes place with 2 teenagers apparently dying and going to hell and most of the game seems to take place there? Looks incredible from the E3 trailer and a really different take on the idea

Not technically Hell or even an Afterlife, but Silent Hill's Otherworld acts very much the way Hell is often described as, with fire/blood/brimstone, whilst also being personalized nightmares! Probably the most inventive take on a Hell-like setting I've ever seen in a video game, especially the sheer Otherness of 1 and 3's!

Thank you for posting these. I love being reminded of how great Silent Hill 3 was. Absolute masterpiece.

Maybe there's something wrong with me but ever since the original Doom, Hell has been one of my favorite settings in video games. It's alien in a different way than your stereotypical alien settings. I mean, it's hell.

Gore and viscera decorating the walls. Red and black is always in season in hell. But so few games venture into this territory. So few in fact that this thread wouldn't be very interesting if I were to limit the discussion purely to the Christian after life.

So what are your favorite hell or hellish environments in games? It doesn't just have to be black and red Demonic gore nests. It can be anything you consider hellish.

Doom is the obvious answer so I going with the Ishimura from Dead Space.
The Darkness' World War 1 Hell is my favourite cause it's unsettling, sad, and inspired.

Not quite what the OP was after, but I like event horizon style depictions of hell, like in Dead Space.

Skyward Sword's lower Ancient Cistern gave me some strong eastern underworld vibes, if that counts. I loved the place.

Speaking of Zelda, I'm sure everyone remembers this creepy dude as being the most hellish thing from OoT:

Oh shit that's awesome. I'd love to see that same concept done with modern tech.

The Labyrinth of Amala from SMT Nocturne, which is clearly a parallel of hell. Bonus for getting progressively more hostile and unsettling the deeper you get through it.

Dante's inferno, I loved that game. Late game is a bit phoned in, but otherwise it's a very nice and fun to play game. A shame this game is stuck on old console hardware without a PC version. I will have to dust off the ol' Xbox 360 and this a whirl soon.

Dante's Inferno had some really cool ideas but unfortunately never quite reached the heights of its concept art.

Still a fun game and I would have loved to see what they would have done with Purgatory

I genuinely want a Souls game set in the circles of hell. From Software needs to straight up steal the concepts for Dante's Inferno and execute on them, it's one of my dream games.

My favorite gaming depiction of hell (and heaven for that matter) is from a MUD game where you had to go out of your way to find a cave deep enough that it reached Hell.
There was also a way to reach heaven as well but for the life of me I can't remember how.
I won't provide screenshots as it's kind of a text based game anyway.
think MMO but just text.

Otherwise there's that sim game where you build heaven and/or hell in that old macintosh game.

More Demon World than actual Hell (although the first game refers to it as the Underworld) but Devil May Cry has two different takes on it.

FYI I said it DOESN'T have to be strictly hell. Just hellish. Dead Space counts and is in the OP.

While DMC and Bayonetta don't really do much new with the concept i like how it feels more like an otherworldy dimension than any typical concept of hell. In dmc its like you are going to heaven and bayo has a water theme

Solium Infernum is a mid 2000s indie 4X where you are a ruler in hell looking to take over. Very interesting game with very strict diplomacy that required various stages of insults and threats before you can actually go to war against someone.

Just found out there's still a small community of like 20 people still running a game or two of it.

Always loved Hell depicted in the Darkness, demons crossed with WWI&2 german imagery.

Yep, the gameplay in those levels might have been lame but the imagery was absolutey top. fucking. notch. Especially the one soldier committing suicide over, and over and over but never able to die. It was chilling. Shoutout to everyone who said Painkiller too. That final level really left an impression on me when I played it way back when.

Im actually a big fan of the Hell levels in Doom 3. Standard depiction of Hell with fire and brimstone and shit, but the atmosphere, the Fly-babies, the constant wailing and moaning, holy shit it was just horrible.

The most terrifying depiction will always be "I have no mouth and I must scream".
Diablo 2 will always remain a favorite too.

the only true answer (or the superior DC version)

Fur Fighters had a cool depiction of hell with the level 'The Bad Place' making you play through the character's worst nightmares such as one character being married to the game's villain or another's memories of war.

The area in your pic (the gates of hell) is pretty cool looking, but inferno itself is pretty dull. Just rocks and spiky vines as far as I recall. Doesn't really fit with the mechanical look of most of the demons in the game either. I always thought the angels/paradiso aesthetics were far cooler and more unified.

Painkiller was a blast when it came out, fast paced, great controls, the first ragdolls and great weapon impact (you pierced people with wooden stake that stuck in the bodies xD ).
I loved the game, i remember modding in a 3D radar, Elite-fashion, because there were some fun things to find in the game world (it has to be present somewhere, lost the source a long time ago).
I am certain it aged a lot visually, and i won't look at it, i want to keep my good memories :)
