High anxiety with caffine

Keep sleeping waa too long and end up waking up - falling back asleep and I'm here 16 hours and about to go to bed again. So I made some coffee and now I've been anxious and shivering for the past four hours despite taking my anti anxiety medication and... well fuck. I'm up but not in a good way. This shit sucks. Mostly ranting but is there an explaination for this?

Caffeine has a noted effect on the Peripheral Nervous System, which is responsible for the fight or flight response.

I can't consume caffeine for this reason either, even though I still do it.

sounds like your body just isn't used to 'dosing' on caffeine. A few weeks without caffeine i can get serious anxiety attacks but after weeks of overtime where I essentially have to go through x cups of coffee a day i could down like five red bulls and not even twitch

Same. My caffeine intake is more than it used to be thanks to getting hooked on sugary sodas, but the effects of high-caffeine energy drinks and large amounts of coffee/tea on my anxiety are too acute for me to ignore anymore.

Usually don't drink caffeine since, well, I gained weight the past year and water is my go to, or alcohol but for real - I can't stay awake for like 10 hours without sleeping for a stupid amount of time, starting to become a big problem and no, I haven't been drinking since this happened.

Boggles my mind amphetamine is far more benign than caffeine when it comes to anxiety for me.
The only amphetamine I've ever fucked with that I know of has been adderall, but between that and the few bumps of cocaine I've ever had I can def say caffeine is the only one that fucked with my anxiety to a noticeable degree.

I could imagine it might have something to do with regularity of use, because when I was a teenager and hardly ever had caffeine I remember it not doing shit to me. As I grew older and I guess my body grew accustomed to the high the anxiety started pushing forward. But also I have never been prescribed uppers and you might have so it might just be how my brain chemistry reacts to it anymore.

You need to lighten up.

You need healthy natural sleep. Chew some valerian root and get more exercise.

I was diagnosed at age 7, so of course I will probably respond to stimulants differently. Even then they can induce anxiety, but not really.

Maybe it's a chemical difference in the two. When you add brain chemistry it ends up being a lot of factors that can affect everyone uniquely, like how I read and hear that ADHD meds affect people with and without ADHD in almost opposite ways.

I hope amphetamines have helped you with whatever you are diagnosed with!

I drink green tea instead i can handle that way better, it's also very healthy.

Coffee also has a bad effect on me i only drink ice coffee mostly whenever i do and very rarely normal coffee.

Yeah I’m sensitive to caffeine I think and get here I am, drinking my morning joe. It’s a vicious cycle. I guess the first step is to admit I’m addicted to it. It even amps up my anxiety but I’m not learning.

I am Jack's smirk.

OP, caffeine stays in the body for at least 5 hours, which will fuck up your sleep. Sleep is crucial for your emotional wellbeing.
Yup, latest i take a caffeine drink or even my adhd meds (those also can ruin sleep) is around 5-6 max 7-8pm. Otherwise i can't sleep for hours when going to bed around midnight.

Pure caffeine is an anxiety nightmare. Things like tea have other things in it (like theanine) to balance it better.

I'm trying to get off coffee to perhaps get these symptoms outta me

Sucks being drowsy most of the day so far, hoping to normalize eventually
It does, I stopped drinking any caffeine 6 years ago. Took I think around 3 months to really get a rhythm going but now it feels great to just having a natural rhythm. Most of the time I'm way less tired than my girlfriend who drinks 3/4 coffee a day still, but I fall asleep way faster.

I have recently started consuming caffeine in pill form (can’t stand the taste of coffee), because I simply had no energy in the morning.

As a highly anxious and depressed person, caffeine has had the exact opposite effect on me. As long as I’m under it’s effect, my anxiety is practically gone, and I become a much more sociable person.

Today I took a double dose, to due to my work out (fuck you 18.1, aced your ass!) and I keep waiting to have some adverse effect on me as I have been warned, but so far nothing.

So I stopped drinking caffeinated drinks 2+ years ago due to massive amount of anxiety I would get when drinking them, and I did it cold turkey too and had massive headaches for about a month on and off and felt weird the first week. After that, though? Much better and my anxiety went down TREMENDOUSLY, it was definitely worth avoiding Black Tea, Green Tea, etc.

If I really am in the craving for tea these days I drink Numi brand Rooibos Tea which you can get at the grocery store as it tastes similar to Black Tea, but honestly tastes even better and is more refreshing, and the best part is that it has 0 caffeine with it being an herbal tea.

I love coffee but it's ruining my teeth with all the grinding and bruxism stuff. 1 cup is fine. Drink water and exercise.

Coffee over-indulgence fucks up your adrenal glands or something I've heard. Makes it like your a piece of burnt toast, all dried up and burnt out

Doe the same to me even though I totally love coffee. I drink green tea now and it doesn’t have the same anxiety-producing effect

OP as someone with Anxiety / PTSD I can tell you that caffeine and I do not mix. I learned that my limit is 6oz a day. If I go past that I start getting really anxious.

Too much caffeine has that effect on most people to say nothing of someone suffering with anxiety. Cut back your intake and you should be ok.

One time my mom made a batch of Thai cold brew coffee - after drinking a cup of it I seriously thought I was going to die. Sweating, fast heart beat, mind racing, etc. Never experienced something like that but goes to show that caffeine can produce some weird effects.

As so many other have noted that is actually very common. Even people that don't otherwise suffer from anxiety can get it from drinking too much caffeine. It used to mess with me pretty bad too and I gave it up.

If you like the taste of coffee I suggest switching to decaf. It still has a very small amount of caffeine in it, but I can drink decaf just fine with no symptoms, while normal coffee makes me get major anxiety.

Sorry to hear about that man it sounds like you're having a rough time, I hate being anxious while I'm trying to go to sleep.

Best advice I can offer is that this is temporary and should go away once the caffeine wears off.

In the meantime you should probably email whoever prescribes your medication about this. They'll have more knowledge about this than anyone on this thread.

Try drinking tea instead of coffee, generally works for me although it can still cause a rise in anxiety at times.

Caffeine addiction sounds intense. I'm just glad I only need a good sleep, water, and breakfast to get me through the day.

You're hypercaffeinated, simple as that. Caffeine is a central stimulant. If you overdose it you'll get hyperactive symptoms - shakes, heart palpitations and quickened heart rythm, a feeling of anxiety, jerky movements, thoughts feeling like they're spinning around in your head, loose stool, increased urinary drive, inability to sleep, the works. The degree varies with the dose and your personal tolerance. It can get accentuated if you drink it on an empty stomach or att odd hours, like I suspect you just did. It'll pass in a few hours.

And yes, this is a known phenomenon in people with anxiety issues.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caffeine-induced_anxiety_disorder

You're more susceptible than most people because of your underlying condition.

Important note: Sleep is way more about consistency than anything else. Caffeine has a definite effect, but the most important way to keep getting good sleep is to create a consistent bedtime and wake up time every single day, even weekends.

I had high anxiety coupled with horrible sleep issues. I dropped caffeine for a year and a half, and it seemed to help. I now drink it occasionally, like every friday or so when I know I don't have to wake up early the next day. Like I said though, the biggest factor was creating a strict sleep schedule that I adhered to every single day.

I'm really not sure if there's a strong connection, but man, it feels super nice to not feel addicted to the stuff. Once you're off it and you have a solid sleep schedule, it really doesn't feel like you actually need it to feel awake.

Yeah I don't mix well with caffeine. Just makes me end up feeling anxiety, it's not fun.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with GAD/severe anxiety and depression.

A lot of it was due to underlying emotional issues and stress, sure, but caffiene was a major contributing factor.

Ive cut it significantly but not completely. Any time i go a little overboard it starts to give me anxiety for no reason.

Green tea is the only source Ive found that doest affect me at all really.

I avoid caffeine in general because I already have high anxiety. Sometimes I get real tired and give in, but only if I REALLY need it at work. It also sounds like you are getting tired really easy. Anxiety medication can totally make you sleep more often and very deeply. Not sure what your taking, but if its Xanax or any other benzo that could be why you are sleeping for so long.

Happens if I drink lots of coffee with vyvanse. Drink lots of water or Gatorade, eat something and breath heavy/deep.

It can get really bad sometimes.

coffee is basically a mood extremizer for me. im gonna drink it regardless, and depending on how my day goes and how my mood is it will either amp up my anxiety, make me energetic and goofy, or make me very focused

I drink a lot of guayusa/green/white tea.

They seem to be the right dosage to give me a bit of alertness without giving me the jitters.

You might try supplementing with L-theanine. It's an amino acid naturally found in green tea, which is likely why so many people are mentioning green tea as an alt that worked for them.

I take 200mg with coffee and haven't had that jittery nervous feeling since. There are lots of studies backing it up, and its fairly cheap as well. Highly recommend looking into it.
