i think the worst point i've seen in the latest round of "Stans Losing Their Shit When People Who Make Good Movies Levy Mild Criticism At The Most Successful Movies Of All Time" is the new thing that 'theaters would probably be closed if it weren't for Marvel flicks' as if indie theater should thank their benevolent overlords for forcing them to commit one of their four screens to an abomination like Solo for three movies
it’s literal bootlicking

Haha fair enough. When you release your own music you definitely should know what's been sampled though, because that shit needs to be cleared. So he better got it from Splice or licensed it through Tracklib, or you're fucked when the owner of the original track finds out you sampled it on a commercial song without permission.
Oh I'm aware. I'm just a guy making songs in his living room right now though, I figure if my shit ever pops off enough that it becomes an issue, it'll be fine because I'll be poppin' lol.
I'm going through a kinda similar dilemma myself actually. I have a ton of beats I've produced, but can't rap for shit. However, since my artistic process generally involves sampling tons of shit that can't really even be cleared with normal means (old video games, random youtube video, stuff like that), I'm hesitant to get into the beat leasing market and expose other people to legal risk. The reason I was asking about distro is cause I'm thinking right now the best move might be to just release the stuff as a Clams Casino type beat tape/instumental album and take all the risk on myself in the unlikely scenario where someone recognizes a sample.

You can lease all your beats on beatstars regardless since you're not publishing them. The onus lies on the artist to clear the sample when they go to publish the finished track. Vast majority of people aren't gonna clear samples, but contractually you arent liable if they don't.

But Marty is gatekeeping! I got a nice laugh out of that. Just got my tickets to see the irishman can't wait
Can you imagine having a real conversation with someone that dropssome of the nonsense that comes up in those threads? It would be so apparent it was someone whose identity is so tied into comic book movies that they constantly need supreme, constant validation so any criticism of those films threatens them personally. It would be so so awkward.

That's good to know. I haven't actually really gotten around to signing up for the individual leasing sites to see the details; I'm guessing that I have to then disclose samples somehow then? It's all so tricky. I don't even need the money from leasing, I'm just trying to figure out the best way to get my music out to the world with or without vocals in a way that won't get anyone (except me) in legal trouble.

Nah, you don't have to disclose shit. It's up to the artist to contact you and ask what the sample is if they want to get it cleared. Even if they don't clear it you will not be held legally responsible as you aren't publishing the beat.
Best way to get yr beats out there is to find collaborators that are good and have a bit of an audience and work with them consistently imo. There's like 10,000 dudes uploading free type beats every day, the market is hella saturated.

Yeha, that's definitely how I've read the state of the industry too. Problem is, I'm introverted as fuck lol

Reach out online, search tags on insta, send a pack of tagged up beats to smallish rappers you fuck w. Take some time and go through a bunch of artists pages and listening to their stuff. It's time consuming but that's the hussle, used to be flyering the neighborhood, now it's flyering the DMs

Bruh.
Idk if anyone here posted it yet but Earthgang announced a tour with Mick Jenkins.
The Miami show here is only $30, that’s including fees.
That’s one hell of a double bill, check your city

neoliberalmarvelERA be like

I do find it very funny when people are like “at least the MCU isn’t all movies about straight white men like Scorsese”

oh yeah what a great job with representation they’ve done, it only took 22 movies before they let a woman star in one. That’s so much better than the guy who made Alice doesn’t live here any more.

while we're on the topic, i feel like Iger invoking Black Panther and Coogler in his initial response to this whole thing has been kind of overlooked. feels like a really shitty, accusatory implication to make towards a dude spending time towards preserving African films from a guy who couldn't be bothered to spend enough money on making the last act CGI in BP look better than a PS2 cutscene

For sure. It was the “I have a black friend, you can’t criticise me” response.

...bruh.

I'm staying out of this shit, I can't handle 30-somethings in cargo shorts and Crocs saying Martin Scorsese doesn't know real cinema.
rolls out of my art hole

Actually a lot of kids kids or young people, not the 30 year old beardo's that you imagine but younger folks who the marvel cenematic universe as like a thing is more relevant to thier lives than anything those guys are talking about has ever done.

I find anyone comparing it to why people say hip hop isn't real music baffling and painfully unaware of the struggles of black and Hispanic peoples and cultures in America and across the frigging planet.

And on another level I don't know why you even care about what they are saying, those films are backed by the IP old god cluthulu monster that is Disney, the mouse controls the popular media that shit ain't going away because some film maker doesn't like it to get this upset baffles

All that said its interesting to look at , like in music, games, now film it has been interesting to see a bunch of folks my age and younger even kids just disregard old shit irrelevant to then. Because it isn't just colored by out with the old in the with new , there are very real new social dynamics that are coloring this sort of separation between those things the " This is some boomer/dusthead shit" mentality. Obviously in situations like these it shows ones ignorance and maybe an allegiance to a corporation who could give less of a fuck about you , more so your dolleridoos . But in other scenario's there are things that maybe should be disregarded, and that completely removal of various middle man's and status quo's causes older folks to complain about how millennial and Gen Z don't do XYZ or revere them or whatever. This conversation has been a fascinating weird perverse corporate turn on that sort of thing

Now that my weird art school crazzyness out of the way

Show me some new songs with nice beats

I haven't seen it yet (not sure if I ever will) but from everything I've heard black panther is like entirely pro-CIA neocolonialism so lol that it's being trotted out as the pinnacle of woke filmmaking

The fact that everybody on the MCU side just let that slide speaks volumes

Great interview. I like Hudson and Lunice talking about process and their expectations for new music. They don’t want to recreate Higher Ground or R U Ready, they just want to play around and see what happens when the two are working together.

plz tour though.
