Just saw the news. Lol nice of them to try but Rowling and Leavitt are still going to profit off of the game. WB knew what kind of person Leavitt was and actively allowed him to continue running his YT account knowing the type of person he was.

The fact that Troy is still employed there says it all though. WB doesn't really care.
He is still employed there and Rowling is still getting money and clout from the game. No, thank you.
This is unquestionably a good thing. But it doesn't change the fact that she is profiting off this game and it doesn't change the fact that Troy Leavitt is still with the company.
Yeah that's good, but I'm still not giving a cent to that TERF.
My thoughts exactly. Good on the individual devs who pushed for this, but if I bought this game, it wouldn't benefit them. It would benefit Jerkwad Karen Rowling and the company that knowingly continues to employ a sexist GG supporter. The absolute minimum WB could do to possibly get me to reconsider is publicly make sizable donations to trans charities and organizations in an amount equal to or nearly equal to the revenue from sales. Even then I'd still be on the fence at best.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, firing Leavitt and ensuring Rowling will never see a cent of royalties from this are the actual bare minimum they could do. Won't buy this for anything less.

So this is a uniquely awful situation where both the creator of the IP and a senior producer on the game have unrepentant bigoted views.

The team has talked it over at length and as a result we've decided to implement a total ban on threads for promotional media for the game. This means there will be no threads for trailers or official announcements, no hype threads, no fluff pieces about its features. This functionally bans almost all threads leading up to release, unless there are major new developments about the controversy or something along those lines.

This is the first time we've done something like this and we consider this a very exceptional case. It's not just one bigoted game designer that made the difference here. JK Rowling's singular reach and influence, how closely that influence is tied to the Harry Potter IP, and what she chooses to do with that power, is a unique problem on top of this latest controversy.

We're going to revisit whether to have an OT much closer to the game's release. Learning from what happened with Cyberpunk, if there is an OT, it will have a text-only OP created by staff that lays out the controversy with the game and IP. The main reason to have an OT at all is the same one we've articulated before: Some minority members want a space to discuss the game's contents where they will not be shouted down by bigots.

For now though we're definitely not going to be platforming the marketing. If you see any threads for that stuff please report them. If you're unsure about a thread you want to post, please contact the staff first to check before creating it.
That's the right thing to do! Thank you!

Thank you mods for doing that.

My wife has decided that if she's buying the game, she will buy it used and we'll donate however much we spent on the game to a local charity that provides food, shelter, and clothing for young trans people who have been kicked out of their homes.

As for JK Rowling, I thought I read that WB paid her to use the Harry Potter IP before it went into development and that she wouldn't see any extra money from sales? Unless I was mistaken.

I don't think the terms were ever made clear to the general public. I do remember arguing with someone on Twitter about the semantics, because the person kept insisting that Rowling wasn't getting paid because WB owns the franchise. He couldn't tell the difference between WB owning the rights to do certain specific things with it, and outrightly having ownership.

At least according to Polygon, she probably still gets royalties and I agree with them.

Yeah, Rowling isn't filthy rich just because she wrote a good series. The woman is smart as fuck, she knows how to handle her IP. There is no way she's not making any money from everything carrying the name "Harry Potter."

I think if the Hogwarts Legacy team wants this game to succeed, taking Troy off the project and making sure J.K Rowling doesn't get any of the money from this is the least they can do.

I have a feeling that the launch of this game will be messier then Cyberpunk 2077 (I'm not talking about the bugs).

how in the world do you propose they go about "Making sure JK Rowling doesn't get any of the money from this"? Its literally an impossibility.

I also heard that. I don't believe much (this type of contract is super rare post star wars), but even if it is 100% true:
if it sells a lot it will get a sequel and she will be paid another insane amount for the IP use.

They already announced a harry potter game, she already got money from this

Troy is still there.
WB hasn't spoken against JK Rowling's views.
WB is still (presumably) giving money to JK Rowling.
Troy is still there and WB didn't have a problem with his YouTube content.

Show me work towards correcting these things. Until then, this game still actively hurts people who are transgender.

Unfortunately the fact that there was resistance from management to this feature shows this won't happen anytime soon (if at all).

I mean like he said, he resigned on his own terms so 1. WB didn't do shit (ffs) 2. Crybabies arguing he got cancelled have no leg to stand on.

How long before Ben Shapiro announces he's opening a game development studio and hiring Leavitt?

This does not make WB look any better. In fact the opposite since it didn't come from the company. He is also probably looking to grift on the situation by restarting his youtube channel. Probably think that there are people who support him and will watch his videos. Not sure how successful that would be since he cancelled himself lol.
