Homebrew: PPSSPP reaches Wii U

Yes, i know there's a PPSSPP official thread, but i think this deserves its own space. It came basically from nowhere, but now Wii U has effective and working PSP emulation





As you can see it has touch inputs and requires 1 frameskip to run at full speed, i haven't tested anything besides Dracula X Chronicles and Ridge Racer 2, but i would say it runs quite good

Here's the download link, just extract its contents in the root of your SD. Just remember it's a very early alpha and will see further polishment. For Retroarch users, the core may be released soon, too.

Oddly enough, that means that every console from that gen (Wii U, PS4, XB1) can emulate PSP to a certain extent. Interesting.

The Wii U is secretly going from the worst console ever made to one of the best consoles ever made.

The Parappa the Rapper port is already running on a psp emulator xD


edit: which is kinda funny that the PS1 emulator is pretty bad because of dynarec but now we can play Parappa The Rapper on PSP !

Yeah that's what I was getting at, and with Dev Mode on the Xbox you can run PPSSPP. There's an unofficial port.

Nice! I've still got my Wii U hooked to clear out my backlog and then keep it as my retro machine.

What do we have playable/emulated on Wii U right now?

You have Sega consoles up to Genesis and Sega CD emulated vía Retroarch, also Neo Geo AGS, Neo Geo Pocket, CPS from 1 to 3, MAME in general and way more than i can remember.

PSX nothing yet, but i remember PPSSPP running PSX games in PSP format

Wiiu seems to be a great emulation lad but I stil don't want it lol, hope Switch follows soon. My second device is ready and waiting.

That's amazing, I don't have Retroarch on my Wii U yet, I have it on my laptop but it's kinda confusing for my little mind.


Please test it, you'd be a hero! Maybe I'm going to finally buy a PSP and some games for this.

My Wii U is hacked and I have no idea how to add all this emulator stuff to it.

Is it simple?

edit: no need to get into specifics if this is against the rules anyway lol

Wii U is secretly the best all in console ever. Cant wait till switch becomes this too, since you will be able to take it on the go too.

We'll see improvements without doubt. This version wasn't ready to be released, but it appeared listed in the makefile of the Retroarch buildbot, so the developer of the port gave permission to release it in the wild.

It's very simple imo, I'm not tech savvy at all and I found it easy to do. There is a good guide out there, forgot the site, but a quick Google search should help you. The hardest part is making backups/dumps for older games imo.

About Retroarch, i need to note that you need to install the Retroarch launcher channel via WUP installer, since it provides extra stability.

Ok, sorry for getting anyone's hopes up. No, PPSSPP isn't compatible with POPS (The PSP Playstation emulator), just researched for a bit and saw the same pseudoconfirmation i remembered, but as of today PPSSPP doesn't load PSX games

It's PCSX2 the one that has PSX compatibility implemented.

It does everything: Gba, GB, DS, nes, snes, n64, sega genesis, mame, ps1, GameCube, Wii, actual Wii U games and now PSP, amazing :)

Did a Quick last test before going to bed. All graphic options are there for us to tinker with them. Resolution can be cranked up, but obviously framerate tanks Hard. Still, it's a fun thing to try.

Great news. I wouldn't have expected it, with PPSSPP being heavily JIT dependent. I wonder how deep will the Wii U go in emulation department, since despite not being an adequate design for its time it looks like it can do more than anticipated. Too bad Dolphin is 64-bit only now, upresing Wii games would be cherry on top.

Oh. I might do this and retire my actual PSP. Like, I love its games but man my hand hurts so much after using the PSP. Do I need to get a specific version of the Wii U for this?

Just read reports on gbatemp of the emulator crashing after 5 minutes, so i decided to chip in and spent the last hour playing without issues, even switching between RR2 and DXC

The blur effect that shows with nitro on RR2 doesn't work correctly, though

Wii U has a whole lot in common with the Dreamcast.

It certainly could have been Nintendo's last console if they didn't already have so much money.

I did a couple tests of my own:

Street Fighter Alpha 3 (Runs at full speed)


GTA LCS - Crashed shortly after the end of this video




Every other game I tested booted into menu, but usually crashed when you tried to start a new game (Peace Walker/Kingdom Hearts).

It seems that some people is experiencing issues while having many isos in their SD.

Also, the PPSSPP homebrew store actually works.
