How do People Nap?

Seriously how do people take naps? Pretty much anytime I've taken a nap I wake up feeling like garbage, and my sleep schedule gets thrown off. I felt exhausted when I got home from work today, and almost immediately went to sleep, and now I've woken up like an hour from when I would normally to go to sleep to get a full 8 hours. Does anyone successfully take naps, and if so what are some pro strats?

It's like snacking for zzz's. A life with naps is a privileged life.

The only way I nap is to be deprived of sleep the night before and randomly get tired.

Drinking the night before and staying up late makes it happen.

Yea, it has to be a shorter nap, like under an hour, and probably at least like 4+hours away from before you want to go to bed.

Yeah, but how do you actually do that? If my body is tired enough to fall asleep I'm not going to wake up for a minimum of 2-3 hours.
I used to set an alarm because it would do exactly what you said, groggy and fucked up sleep schedule. Now if I nap (which is rare), I just get up in 30 minutes or so naturally.

I don't nap anymore, I always wake up feeling like shit AND in a bad mood. I just fight through the tired until night time.

I started napping because of depression back in middle school. Now any time I'm stressed or upset, I nap. It's a hard habit to break. I always feel tired. :(

Love naps. I mean, for me, they just happen when I’m on the couch watching TV or something... I just naturally pass out and don’t fight it.

Step 1: Have Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Step 2: Fall asleep the night before without putting on your CPAP
Step 3: Wake up to start the day tired as hell
Step 4: Zzzzzz
Step 5: Lose a lot of weight over several years and pray that cures you. (Worked for me)

I have horrible stamina, so i usually need to rest alot and or nap some. I prefer sleeping to being conscious anyway tbh.

Naps are shit.

Say you had 4hrs sleep, you wake up at 7am, at work at 9 and finish at 5, u get home at 6, and are very tired. But don't go go and sleep. Eat food and wait until 9 or 10.
If u go to sleep at 6pm you will wake up at like 2am, and then the cycle repeats.

I'm with you OP. Naps are the worst. I much prefer going to bed early or sleeping in, if it is a weekend.

i never nap, because it's physically exhausting, and it's uncomfortable unless i'm in my own home. (sometimes napping on a long car ride is soothing, as a passenger, but meh that only happens a few times a year, road trips or my friend/family member driving us back from an event past midnight)

if i fall asleep during the day, it's because i'm sick with the flu or fever or something- and when that happens i almost always get horrific nightmares. it's very odd. not a regular occurance, maybe once every couple years around winter time.

even as a child, i didn't take naps. i can't sleep during the day. i'd rather just keep up whatever energy i have until bedtime.

Naps are the GOAT, but you can't take them at night, you fool. Why would you think that taking a nap that ends right before you're supposed to go to sleep is a good idea?
Use your alarm? An app like PZIZZ? Time it according to your circadian rythms (1.5 hours), etc.

From recent articles I've read on sleep science, naps are worthless unless you're dangerously fatigued and need a bit of energy recovery. The virtue of sleep is primarily in REM and you need 90 minutes to get a good REM cycle, but really need 3 hours to get the full benefit.

Your naps are probably too long. A ten minute nap at like 4pm is all I ever need. I set an alarm just in case but I naturally wake up after 10mins and feel amazing.

I take one or two 15-minute naps a day if I’m in a position to. They work great for me.

It just doesn't work for some people, it seems. I take naps pretty often, ranging from 20 to 60 minutes usually, and I always wake up feeling refreshed and reenergized. I love them.

I think that's like if you're trying to replace sleep entirely with naps.

I get tired, I'm already in bed, I go to sleep. Sometimes I wake up 30 minutes later, sometimes it's 2 hours.

My fiance takes naps all the time and goes to sleep perfectly fine at night. I don't know how she does it.

yeah I would say 2 hours is generally the max for a healthy nap, seems like after that your body has concluded it's for-reals sleep time and then you're all fucked up

I take one every day, even weekends. I'm up at 7 AM, I skip breakfast and usually have lunch at 11, right after I lay down either on the couch or upstairs in bed (this is a pants-off nap then and the best kind) and read a book and fall asleep for an hour or so before I have to start work.

20-30 minute naps are what you want op. Just need to crash for a little while to recharge.

Yea I just can't do it. It doesn't matter if I just take a 15 minute nap, I wake up feeling like I'm in some dream state and shit is weird for awhile. I'd love to nap and feel like my body needs it as I've been feeling more and more tired the older I get, but I just can't.

My fiance on the other hand loves to sleep. She'll sleep 12 hours on her off day and take a 3 hour nap after she wakes up. Been like that her whole life. Blows my mind.

There's a timing to it I find. 10 - 30 minutes for me is perfect. If I nap for more then an hour I wake up feeling terrible.

Also depends on the time of day.

I've never been able to nap well. I end up sleeping for far longer than expected, or if I don't...I wake up feeling worse.

By closing my eyes.

If it's not on the train but at home, I set an 18 minute alarm. Don't sleep after that.

Less than 20 minutes, too little.
More then 20 minutes but less than an hour? Great.
More than an hour but less than 2 hours? You'll wake groggy.
2 hours? Fantastic.
More than 2 hours? You're just sleeping now.

Man, naps are the best. My wife is always amazed at the places and situations I can catch a quick catnap in. It's never affected my nighttime sleep for whatever reason.

I nap everyday so it's more of a habit to me. *shrug* Doing about an hour avoids the post-nap slump is usually my experience, but you must get up to do something like a chore or walk. If you just lay there after a nap it kinda just drains you.

Ive just felt drowsy and tired afterwards when I’ve tried it because my body feels like I woke up too early. I just can’t sleep less than an hour. There’s no satisfaction in it for me.
