To be real, it made me realize that I have some weird fetishes, as they aren't really explore in western porn. Though, that could be because western porn doesn't really much of a plot or characters, while every once in a while I can find a great story in Hentai.

It certainly creates unrealistic expectations of things ending up ok in life.
(For the most part)

If a girl's power level isn't over 9000 I instantly find them undateable. I also have a harem and blood shoots out of my nose when I see fanservice.

Digimonster girls and boys.
I guess girls. I like monster girls, but Digimon never interest me in that sort of way. Moth Girl on other hand is an automatic read, despite the constant mood swings in the story. I don't mind really as I can enjoy the dark depressing moments in once chapter, while the next is a comfy couple story.

Anime (especially One Piece) is what helped me first make friends in high school as someone transferring back into public school after having been out during middle school

anime seems to be mainstream these days tbh

i mean, yeah, like every other genre or medium of art a significant amount of the pool of content will be mediocre attempts to cash in on a trend and there will always be a gradient from mainstream works to obscure works

but i guess - contrary to the usual joke - anime has ruined men for me because there's no gorgeous pretty boys with kind hearts and passionate dreams in my life

Going through a "anime sucks" phase did wonders for me, now i like anime again, but also acknowledge all the awful shit associated with it, so the shit that is bad about anime never got normalized in my head.

Well, because of anime I made a ton of friends in college. I'm still close with a large number of them, we talk all the time and are there for one another through rough times and offer one another ideas and basically provide each other with positive male support.

...I guess...completely ruined?

It sounds to me like OP has some problems that channelled through anime because that's what they are invested in.

I'm so damaged that not even Crazy Diamond can fix me. I personally blame the Super Best Friends for introducing me to JoJo and reigniting my childhood love of anime.

Well, earlier in life my love of it was cited as a major element to losing my longtime girlfriend and that sent me into a depression cycle that had me swearing off all anime and manga. My ex was extremely critical of it, found it extremely problematic in its depiction of women and sex, and hated the adolescent storylines I was into. In some ways, she was right- I think I had overcorrected super hard in high school in running away from western pop culture and diving into online weeb communities. I was willing to ignore a lot of the grossest elements because I was desperate for the novelty and the edge I saw in shows like Gantz and Blue Gender. In hindsight, these weren't even good shows- I was just trying to push the envelope and chase the specter of Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop- the shows that really got me into anime in the first place.

A few years ago, however, I started getting back into it. The reality was that, on the whole, getting into Anime as a small town boy ended up benefiting me more than I had realized. Anime got me into drawing and art. It got me into animation. It got me into writing. These are all skills that I use every single day in my career. My current girlfriend isn't enraptured with my love of anime, but she tolerates it and even likes some of the shows we sit through.

I think the big difference between me and the other anime nerds I came to know, upon moving to the big city, is that anime was never really about community to me. I never went to conventions or traded reviews online. I just love sci-fi and fantasy, and here in the west those genres are dead. Anime fulfills my desire for novelty in ways that most western media just can't compete with. Because of that, I'm willing to forgive a lot of the industry's problematic practices. I still feel some shame in voicing my love for shows like Made in Abyss, but my guilt is my own problem and is entirely imagined.

I have actually improved since I started watching anime. It's like a rite of passage for me show someone Utena in order for us to truly be considered friends.

Other than that, irreparable harm.

Naruto and Bleach in my formative years left me with constant daydreams of powers and moments of heroics, feats of unbelievable strength and speed, etc.

That being said, I thankfully never was into or understood hentai, so I'm still well-adjusted ... in that regard.

No, but for real, I daydream about having power ... frequently. So perhaps I'm not that well-adjusted after all. I don't own any paraphernalia, don't wear any anime clothes or shoes, no posters, etc.

But the daydreams man. The daydreams.

On second though, I'll have to mirror NESpowerhouse. I've been indescribably harmed.

I've historically been the kind of person who would rather do hobbies than socialize and anime is one of my hobbies but that relationship isn't causal. I've been like that since I was little before I watched my first episode of Pokemon.

Edit: ironically anime is my strongest social link right now. Really cool friends group that I entered from finding an anime group on Meetup.

I think I have lost what amounts to a full month of my life when I realize that I watched the entirety of Naruto. Like I started when I was a kid, but that shit accumulates man. On the other hand, it also taught me the concept of the sunken-cost fallacy.
