I can get being influenced by anime, but having your life downright ruined by it?
This is not normal in any way. It's just another genre of media, why would you let it take control of your life and all?
Why can't it be treated like other movies/tv shows?
I'm not trying to be judgemental, I genuinely don't understand why can anime specifically influence lives in so many negative ways compared to other things.
If those problems cannot be solved on your own, seeking help from therapists is definitely the way. It's fine enjoying watching anime but you can't let it destroy your life.
Unlike communities of other tv shows/movies, anime communities are full of people who are bitter because of other people belittling them for watching anime, so they love to tell each other that everyone else outside of their communities are "normies" who don't know jack compared to them, so it turns into a vicious cycle where they get more and more encouraged to recluse away from the outside world

Honestly kind of offended, OP. I did a good enough job of ruining my life without anime.

I go thru anime phases and I did not let the medium penetrate my psyche, except from Planetes, which is my whole identity, so I'm ok

The anime society at university kept me sane, it's the uniting thing behind a lot of my current friend group, and it's led to me being a company director (of a non-profit that runs an anime convention) with a raft of volunteer organisational experience.

It's been very positive for me in total.

<plug class="shameless">P.S. if anyone in the UK wants to come to an anime convention then please try out Hibanacon in Milton Keynes from November 8th-10th with reasonably priced tickets. Check us out at hibanacon.co.uk </plug>

This seems a bit extreme... I love anime and it has never caused any damage to my personal life. I even got my brother and some of my ex gf's into it.

Than again I don't understand the whole "waifu" culture and I don't have an obsession with anime. I watch 3 episodes a week right now and that's about it.

nah because i dont blame a bunch of dbz t-shirts, body pillows and aesthetic driven life choices for being a repulsive misogynist and then try to burn the path behind me with elitism about whats "good anime" (which just happens to mostly be masculine coded stuff like jojo and bebop) so that women and LGBT+ folk still cant have an easy time just enjoying things they might actually like.

err i mean, damn! all those hairless boys ruined my SEX LIFE

Eh, the only damage it has done is that nothing (IN MY OPINION DONT FREAK OUT) will ever captivate me as much as death note did the first time I saw it.

That and Goku going SSJ for the first time. No other show could beat that.

dont misunderstand me, i love jojo, DiU is one of the greatest things i have ever seen and i would die for okuyasu BUT you have to admit, nobody doing the "i only watch good anime, actually" speech bigs up clam bake animes like sailor moon or utena and I Wonder Why That Is (just kidding i know that its because everything is being judged through the assumption that we're all straight boys)

Ah, that's certainly fair. Jojo is a pretty slow burn on the obvious queer masculinity stuff anyway. I agree with you.

No damage cause I avoid becoming obsessed.
bingo.

anytime we use an obsession (and all of the hormone and chemical releases that come with addiction) to squelch inadequacies or anxieties in our lives.. there will ALWAYS be down sides and severe sacrifices we make in our well being to feed the addiction.

the sex, female/relationship, smoking, etc... guess what... all of that stuff was likely already there to a degree. but instead of dealing with and resolving it.. like healthy individuals already have.. we use that obsession to cope with it through distraction or fantasy.

I don't watch anime, and I'm happy keeping it that way, so any damage done to my life is the fault of myself and other, separate external factors.

None? If anything, I found some great friends who share a common interest in anime and have had great fun watching it with them.

As long as you don't get obsessive over it, like anything else in life, it's fine. Just don't look at my shelf with over 100+ anime on it.

yeah jojo is definitely queer promoting, boldly homoerotic, avant garde in general but u have to admit, it is fundamentally a very masculine show, the idea of equating (all) homoeroticism with effeminacy is pretty debunkable, and furthermore when "i only watch the good anime" ass dudes talk about jojo they almost always go on about joseph and the battle tendency/stardust era anyway (which i also love but it is the most traditionally shonen of what ive seen so far)

This train of thought (which ive now roped you into, ha-HA) reminds me a bit of when people argue that women can and should have male role models and enjoy masculine things. Like of course we do, a LOT, but that's kinda bullshit when the argument gets trotted out to excuse the under-representation of mainstream feminine interests and aesthetics. I don't think people realise the "WAIFU ANIMES ARE CRINGE" crowd throws shade at trans girl, lesbian and even asexual cultures but they do.

It's unfortunate that there aren't many of those perspectives in my anime circles. They're not elitist or anything but can sometimes not be interested in seeing things from another point of view. I'm certainly guilty of that myself too.

Luckily I stopped caring about anime after my senior year of high school. Now I watch Jojo and... that's really it.

Interacting with a certain section of anime fans and watching some of the garbage that gets released every now and then has kind of lowered my faith in humanity, but with everything else going on in the world that's really just a drop in the bucket. Does that count?

Thankfully I've gotten pretty good at avoiding shows like that by now, and there's enough good stuff out there to offset that.

It's interesting you bring up therapy, because that's one of the things anime is generally garbage at, and almost nobody even seems to care. I've watched hundreds of shows, and things like depression, suicide, and mental illness are a very common theme. But I can't think of even a single anime that would feature mental health care professionals/therapists in any way, let alone them being shown in a positive light (except for one really borderline 30 second scene I guess). I don't know how much that matters, but it's one of the bigger issues I have with anime TBH. Well, the issue is more with how literally no one even seems to care, even the otherwise "progressive" anime fans.

Not that western media is that much better, but the difference between how they handle mental health issues is still huge.

But I also don't think calling out anime exclusively is entirely fair. Just go look some of the people that play Dota or LoL (or even worse, something like Black Desert) to see what they do to some people. Hell, I'd rather talk to anime fans than play those games. Even books aren't immune, going by the things I hear about angry YA book fans trying to ruin writers' careers on Twitter.

I was thinking earlier today how me watching anime ruined my life. I started smoking cigarettes because I wanted to be a cool guy like Spike Spiegal. I can't get a girlfriend because anime ruined 2D girls for me and made me socially awkward. Hentai has made real sex foreign. My anime fandom is a curse, a drug I can never get rid of. I am scared to have an anime avatar for fear of outing myself as a weeb. I tried showing friends JoJo and they look at me funny. I get accused of enjoying porn for liking goddamn visual novels. I feel oppressed.

So my question to you is how has anime affected you? I imagine there other victims like myself.

I see a lot of myself in this quote, so I will say: You can get better. You just have to work at it, like Midoriya!

If you are honestly feeling this way: These are not normal feelings. I recommend you to go to a therapist and get help. Many of our traits are not static. Educating yourself can make you better at things. Even interacting with people and making friends and getting a girlfriend.

> started smoking cigarettes because I wanted to be a cool guy like Spike Spiegal.

I dressed like Spike and had the hair in high school. I also smoked. OOF.

Cigarettes are bad. Stop it. I cannot fathom why someone would take their health: Something that is already a HUGE pain in the ass to maintain, and shit on it with cigarettes.

Maintaining my health is hard enough without cigarettes. I have to work out 3 times a week and count my calories to MAINTAIN my health. This means drinking less beer and eating less good food. Go run around the block and tell me how you feel, and tell me about your cigarette habit. People notice you smoke and then don't invite you around. I used to smoke and my girlfriend almost left me over it. It makes your breath smell like a zoo. None of the people I work with openly smoke, they tend to get pushed out of the job. As you get older, not maintaining your health will increasingly be seen as childish.

I quit rather recently. It was hard at first, but honestly: After a few weeks I didn't miss it. And the withdrawals were not that bad. I bridged the gap with juul pods.

I recommend the Smoke Free app, and Easy Way to Quit Smoking - Alan Carr on audiobook.

If you are REALLY struggling, or just enjoy the habit: Vaping has been endorsed by multiple reputable medical organizations to "prevent almost all harm from smoking." You get the buzz, but do not get the smell or the degraded lung capacity or the high blood pressure. Just don't cheap out on the liquid.

> I can't get a girlfriend because anime ruined 2D girls for me and made me socially awkward.

Again, smoking. People don't like it. It smells bad.

Your story is very familiar to me, so I plead with you: Go to therapy. It is what worked for me.

Therapy is not going to be the cliche "So, tell me about your mother..." It is an unbiased person who will talk you through your emotions and negative behaviours, help you process your relationships, and set and meet realistic goals. Plus they will give you drugs. It's really great.

Life is like an RPG. Our traits are not static values that can never increase. With training, you can level up your charisma and become someone people enjoy being around. A therapist will help you set goals week over week to improve these stats.

Read some books on interacting with people. Also, stop smoking. Work out. I know vanishingly few people who get girlfriends sitting in their room, smoking, never working out, and never doing anything to improve themselves. People who do that are called "the clinically depressed" and there are a LOT of great drugs that can help with that.

Also, you really don't want a girlfriend until you yourself are put together and stable. Your partner CANNOT be tied to your happiness. You have to have a life outside of them.

Just be patient. Take it step by step. Once you get a good fire going, people will gather around.

> Hentai has made real sex foreign.

I used to have SO MUCH shame from enjoying hentai. I was made fun of in high school for liking hentai. Then I got a bit older and realized... "Thou doth protest too much, methinks." They were all watching it too. It's really not a big deal.

Repeat after me: Hentai is not weird. It is normal and popular. It is OK to like hentai.

Hentai is not weird. It's not something that comes up in normal conversation a lot, but I really don't care if people know I enjoy hentai.

Hentai is the 5th most viewed category on PornHub[0]. It is popular with both sexes. Hentai is not weird.

Personally, I find a lot of the stories really adorable! "Me and my childhood friend went to the cherry blossom festival together because we couldn't find anyone else, and our feelings finally came out!"

As someone who didn't have a girlfriend until a bit later in life ( smoked, never worked out, never left the house, never re-adjusted my personality after high school ) , you will catch on quickly.

> I tried showing friends JoJo and they look at me funny.

Don't let the haters get you down. Everybody has a guilty pleasure or a dumb show they like. Don't let other people's approval run your life.

Almost none of my friends share the same interests as me. That's now why we get together. You don't want your friend group to be a bunch of clones. It's fine being "the anime guy."

If they are being jerks, try talking to them in an honest way: "Hey. I'm kind-of struggling right now, and I'd appreciate it if you laid off the jokes."

> So my question to you is how has anime affected you? I imagine there other victims like myself

Personally? I still really like anime! The types of stories that are told in anime are not told anywhere else. It is still the king of genre-fiction.

I feel like the tide has really turned on anime in the past 10 years. People have gone from "Ewww, weeb!" to "I like studio Ghibli but there is a big barrier to get through!"

I do not watch as much as I used to, but I still enjoy a good series from time to time. Also: JJBA. Every week.

I say it's improved, if it wasn't for anime I would be wasting a lot of money on comic books instead of manga (the cheaper alternative) and I would still be addicted to certain shows and cartoons, I like the shows I'm watching now

Equal parts saved and destroyed, so I guess it cancels out.

Edit: Nah, the more that I think about it the more I lean to save. Reality is overrated. Thanks captain anime.
