Interacting with a certain section of anime fans and watching some of the garbage that gets released every now and then has kind of lowered my faith in humanity, but with everything else going on in the world that's really just a drop in the bucket. Does that count?

Thankfully I've gotten pretty good at avoiding shows like that by now, and there's enough good stuff out there to offset that.

It's interesting you bring up therapy, because that's one of the things anime is generally garbage at, and almost nobody even seems to care. I've watched hundreds of shows, and things like depression, suicide, and mental illness are a very common theme. But I can't think of even a single anime that would feature mental health care professionals/therapists in any way, let alone them being shown in a positive light (except for one really borderline 30 second scene I guess). I don't know how much that matters, but it's one of the bigger issues I have with anime TBH. Well, the issue is more with how literally no one even seems to care, even the otherwise "progressive" anime fans.

Not that western media is that much better, but the difference between how they handle mental health issues is still huge.

But I also don't think calling out anime exclusively is entirely fair. Just go look some of the people that play Dota or LoL (or even worse, something like Black Desert) to see what they do to some people. Hell, I'd rather talk to anime fans than play those games. Even books aren't immune, going by the things I hear about angry YA book fans trying to ruin writers' careers on Twitter.
I think psychological therapy in Japan is still stigmatized, at least more than it is in America. The only anime I can think of off the top of my head that treats therapy as normal and healthy (as in, generally well adjusted people use therapy to stay healthy) is Psycho Pass.

Minimal damage. I've gotten my girlfriend into Bebop and we saw the movie when it came back to theaters for its anniversary. I don't really watch as much anime as I did when I was younger but I've been watching DBZ again here and there.

I'm good. I had a couple of dragon shirts in the 90s, but that phase didn't last too long.

Also went to a monthly otaku group where they did showings of anime shows on basically a movie screen. That was rad.

I was into it, but not obsessed I guess. I like One-Punch Man and got a subscription to the Shonen Jump app a couple of months ago.

Other than spending too much time watching, nothing.

If anything anime keeps me motivated.

Anime has brought my SO and I together rather. We get hyped together, and look forward to new releases together

Little to no damage? Well, after watching an anime I'm mostly done with it and move on.
I'm not telling everyone that I occasionally watch anime, though nor do I try copying behaviors from the protagonist of an anime.
Also on WhatsApp or any other social media I would not use an anime avatar. It's weird if you're the only one having one and were to explain things.

All in all anime helped me. Mostly Slice of Life anime - fun to watch and entertaining.

I was thinking earlier today how me watching anime ruined my life. I started smoking cigarettes because I wanted to be a cool guy like Spike Spiegal. I can't get a girlfriend because anime ruined 2D girls for me and made me socially awkward. Hentai has made real sex foreign. My anime fandom is a curse, a drug I can never get rid of. I am scared to have an anime avatar for fear of outing myself as a weeb. I tried showing friends JoJo and they look at me funny. I get accused of enjoying porn for liking goddamn visual novels. I feel oppressed.

So my question to you is how has anime affected you? I imagine there other victims like myself.

I can't tell if this is a joke or not. You started smoking because of a cartoon character? How old were you when you watched Bebop?!

Anime is just the thing I watch when I need some nonsensical entertainment in front of me.

From time to time, I will sit down and watch a new series. It isn't part of my day to day life. When I was around 18-20, though, I watched a great deal of it.

So no noticeable damage senpai

Ever since watching Rozen Maiden's "ending" years ago and hearing bad things about Darling in the Franxx's ending, all I can think about when watching an enjoyable show with an unraveling story is "when will they mess it up?"

I'm just confused by this entire thread lol, I watch anime like any show. Watch it, appreciate it. Watch as many as I can. Simple. I think your focusing on anime is misplaced and it's more about how media is influencing you.

I started watching anime strictly socially at first. Parties, hanging out with friends. It was just something that helped me relax around others, a "social lubricant" if you will. Everyone else was watching it, it can't be that bad for me, Miyazaki won an Oscar so that means it's legitimate. I came up with every excuse in the world to try to justify what I was doing. But I swore to myself, I would never be one of those people. The people who buy body pillows. The people who spend hundreds of dollars on box sets. The weebs. Not me, I was above that.

Boy was I wrong.

The amount of cringe anime induces, both directly and indirectly, has probably reduced my lifespan by at least a couple of years.

I used to get hit all the time because girls thought it was funny and acceptable to punch a guy if they say anything that sounds the least bit lewd. It was like they woke up each day just waiting for that moment...

I'm really lazy to devote my time for series in general.

Anime movies, though, I watch them. Most of times with regret, because a lot of them are bad, but I'm hopeful I'll get another masterpiece in front of my eyes.

A lot of heartache caused by exposure to the few genuinely great works of anime out there within a short timespan, followed by years and years of chasing that dragon only to realize much too late that the dragon doesn't really exist.

I am glad I'm too old for all of the serialized stuff that is modern anime. I've tried, it's just not good.

For me, it's only Studio Ghibli and movies and shows from before about 2003, which is when everything got lazy.

I'm 36 and thanks to anime I'm a believer that flat is justice and will only date girls with a b cup or smaller.

I can't visualize real people in my head. I don't know if this is like Prosopagosia or something but it's always cartoon characters when I try to visualize or invent a character in my head.

You know, this pic made me realize why I only respond to yes or no questions at work... Granted, I've learned to "hold it" rather well, but in the process I make myself sound as dull as possible

something i appreciated about anime growing up is that there were androgynous characters who were strong and intelligent - and most importantly *competent* - in a way that the western media i was exposed to never portrayed

i'm sure if i looked back on the anime i watched as a kid - a lot of which has blurred together in my memory - i would find that under scrutiny the representation wasn't as positive as i felt it was at the time or that i projected a bit of myself into certain characters in a way that the author didn't intend

but growing up, i appreciated it
