This is bizarre to me
I realize it's a shitty attitude, but having to deal with racist American tourists is something that skewed my view of the country. I got laughed at for my accent, my height, got named José and other fun stuff that I really didn't like.

So yeah, without any sarcasm I can tell you that I'm sorry if I sometimes can't help but think that Americans are racists until proven innocent.

And no, I don't have any receipts, so you're welcome to criticize me and say I'm wrong, I just know that I'm really happy to just having to deal with this by closing a tab and not listening to their chatter in work anymore.

Cue Obligatory HBO Newsroom Clip (specifically the last half of the clip)

But in a more serious note, and this is coming from a place of love and hope that you guys can get your shit together, but to jump into it... America in general is a first world country which likes to pretend its a third world shithole. You have people dying just short of the streets due to how unaffordable your healthcare system is. You push ineffectual wars on drugs across the entire world and you try to bully every other nation, ally or not, into continuing these stupid policies. You go to war with the middle east and destabilize entire regions, then have the gall to question why the region is such a blight on the world.

Children die by the dozens every single week during periods of the year where schools are in session because you guys can't get your shit together with gun control. Your education system is in shambles due to constant funding cuts, and your political system is basically falling apart in front of you. Your lack of movement on several key areas of society are causing your extremists to become evangelical, and your lack of action is allowing them to reach out and infest the rest of the worlds political systems. To go further, your willingness to put corporations over people has been a blight on the developed world as your corporations go around trying to bully and buy off the world at large, using their stacks of cash to try and change the political views of our citizens into something worse than they are.

When you aren't worshipping god and holding their word above all else in a supposedly secular nation, you are worshipping the altar of Capitalism and doing everything possible to screw your own people. You incarcerate your citizens over the most basic of things, and put them in privatized hellholes which use them as a slave labour force, and when people get out you provide them with no supports ensuring they go right back in. You continuously cut social services for the most asinine of reasons, then question why things are having the opposite effect and are getting worse.

You continuously diss the rest of the world, claiming "American Exceptionalism" without any regard for facts. You tote around freedom like its some unique thing and claim incorrectly that you are the greatest country in the world despite the above. And to make matters worse, when faults are brought up, you always shrug them off. It's all aggravating.

America is just a stain on the western developed world. And it's such a pain to type that out because you guys should be better than this shit and it is disappointing that you aren't. At this point you just aren't an ally of the developed world

"All you guys like to do is kill, kill, kill."

That's what a Canadian said to me during brief conversation.

The US isn't great, but it seems like it's a cool thing to hate on the US. It's kind of annoying, especially when foreigners come here and always bitch about stuff.

It seems like many Europeans I've met that come to the US have a really snobby attitude. They're/You're not bad people, but they often start to brag about how forward thinking they are and how much better they are socially.

Like, fuck, you think I don't already know this shit?

I sometimes get the "Are you even American?" question because I don't watch American football and I pay attention to world news.

I listen to The Dollop, I know just how fucked America is.

Americans as individuals? Depends on the individual of course.

I don't really care if other countries hates us we were always going to be hated because we're the only superpower in the world.

This.....this is a joke right?

Now I've never been to America, so this is based on American tourists in Europe:

You are loud as fuck and have no consideration for the people around you. You know very little of history outside your own country and have no respect for local customs and courtesies.

Before Trump I considered your country the embarassing big brother of the world. After Trump I'd prefer your country to be walled in until you come to your senses.

I'll be honest, as a Canadian, I think a lot of Americans are fucking dumb, self centered & a danger to the world. After all, America elected Trump.

Then I remember that the majority of Americans hate him... I truly have empathy for all the Americans who have to deal with the shame of this presidency and the idiots who still support him. I hope they will bring change in the next elections.

If America doesn't start to clean this mess in the midterms, then shame on you all.

I was in Fort Worth a few years back to see a rodeo. No joke... as we're walking in, we have to stop to make way for a cowboy riding a fucking bull down the street. Like, a 4 foot horn-span bull. He wasn't even performing. They're there.

The nationwide brain washing against anything resembling just basic humanistic socialism is just so fucking bizarre. Worshipping money and hard work and treating people who can't work or earn like trash. It's insane.

I can't stand American tourists. I'm sure you're fine in your own country but every negative American stereotype comes to life as soon as you guys leave the country.

Confirmation bias. I encounter stereotypically stupid people in the aisles of my local grocery store. I have no doubt that these people travel abroad and do equally dumb things in other countries, but you tend to miss the ones that act normal.

I think many countries really hated America way before Trump, mostly due to unwanted international interventions and its need to be the world's bully. And most of it is unknown, which makes me believe it could (and should) be even worse. For instance, the actions of the CIA to (successfully) destroy the Spanish Communist Party during the transition in the 70s is something that most people in Spain didn't know about until the CIA declassified documents earlier this year and was covered by national press. Had this been known when it happened, the reaction would have been very different.

The future doesn't look brighter, in my opinion. With climate change getting worse and affecting very specific countries the most, it won't be hard to blame the country that has been polluting the most for decades and doing the least about it.

On a different note, I think Americans struggle to understand the importance of cultural symbols and constantly shit on what other cultures care about. For instance, here in Spain food is very important, to the point we care more about it than the flag or the anthem. The EU understands this, and there are "denomination of origin" regulations to protect regional products and dishes. America doesn't have any equivalent, so you see Americans selling Padrón peppers from California, or paella that has nothing to do with actual paella (these are two examples I saw recently, it applies to hundreds of things). Padrón peppers are named after the town where they are grown, and we believe the soil, climate and tradition are an important part of what they are, reason why if you grow them somewhere else, you have to use a different name. Otherwise, countries that produce cheaper and worse products would endanger the local, original ones. With paella (or jamón ibérico, or pulpo á feira, or so many other recipes) happens something similar. We had many different regimes, flags, anthems, etc, for a century. This is what was passed on by our families. It is our identity, it is who we are. So when Americans change it and we complain and they make fun of us, they are not understanding that, for us, this is like if someone decided to rewrite their constitution, or made versions of their flag with missing stars.
To me your flag is just a piece of cloth, just like to you my tradition is just a dish of food, but we need to understand that things are the meaning we give them, and that other cultures give meaning to different things, which is why we should respect what others care about instead of dismissing them when called out. We don't oppose people growing peppers or making rice dishes, we just ask that you don't call them what they aren't, specially if it is to profit out of it.

Also, if you are Mexican, Chinese or from any of the countries that, for decades, have been depicted as a joke rather than a person by countless American movies, it's understandable that you don't have a lot of sympathy when they tell you that they are the greatest nation on Earth because they have freedom.

If you want to understand the negative aspect that other countries think about yours, the answer is probably at home: ask indigenous communities; they can't just turn the TV off when someone is being an idiot.

Personally, I don't see America as a country but two. There's one I like, there's one I hate. The one I hate tends to be more visible, which makes it easy to forget that you guys have plenty of awesome people doing wonderful things.

I mean I dislike your government and some of your people. Obviously not all, but the ones I do like seem to be few and far between.

I won't ever truly like the US seeing as their policies and meddling fucked over my birth nation and indirectly killed my aunt and many of my parents friends

Your Mom
we tend to know a lot more about your country than you know about us, due to constant media exposure

when you come here to visit, we'll happily tear into your weak spots - Trump, racism, perceived anti-intellectuality, obesity, gun-worship, ridiculous patriotism, religious to an almost adorable degree

the >stereotypical< American is loud, dumb, superficial. Also open, friendly and eager to chat, to list a few more positive attributes. If I'm not completely mistaken, even your direct neighbors seem to think of you this way

a personal observation is that Americans here and everywhere else are rather thin-skinned when it comes to criticism or mockery, which makes you a welcome target

but Americans for the most part aren't really hated, just the internationally recognised and sanctioned butt of the joke, an unavoidable fate you probably share with every other dominant superpower in history

That HBO news room clip

When was the US ever the greatest country in the world, or even one to be proud of?

Personally, I always feel relief my grandparents migrated to the UK rather than America.

I'm bilingual but the criticisms about knowing only one language or what happens only in America are fairly short-sighted.

The US and Europe are nearly equivalent in size and the states our often larger than European countries. The need or opportunity to speak multiple languages is not nearly the same.

To the point that Americans will put Canadian flags on their backpacks and luggage when traveling.

I don't hate Americans. I have a lot of good American friends. But I'm not a big fan of the country as a whole.

I don't like your politics, your electoral system, your non mandatory voting, your health system, your minimum wage, your tip economy, your individualism, your exceptionalism, your GUNS, your government, your president, your supreme court justice selections, your fundamentalist Christians, your Scientology, your fox news, your Sinclair, your Alex Jones, your Mormons, your penal system, your death penalty, your flag loving patriotism, your education system, your exorbitant student loans.

When visiting my country your people are generally friendly and nice, just a little loud. But welcome anytime.

As a Canadian the general point of view up here at least in my experience is that Americans can be very ignorant of the world outside the US and many actually seem proud of that fact. I think the thing that turns me off the most about the country is the extreme patriotism I've never observed in any other country.

Americans always seem to have this idea that they're the best in the world and therefore anything they do is the right way to do it. Makes it really hard to discuss certain things like healthcare and gun control without getting extremely frustrated.

It is the only super power. Do some research. No other country can match us army air force and navy.
No other country can match your incarceration rates, gun crime, or wealth disparity either.

Visiting Latin and south America, I had no issue as an American. You may run into some animosity if you mention you are a Spanish national.

The U.S. has ten times the population of Canada with a huge range of people in terms of demeanor and beliefs. Implying "all Americans seem to..." would be like me going to Quebec City and thinking that's an appropriate representation of all of Canada. You'll find a significant number of Americans out there that want a Canadian or better style of healthcare and gun reform. Plenty of us recognize the stupidity of American exceptionalism and want to move past it.

I don't think people in Europe dislike the US for the same reasons someone from say Pakistan dislikes the US.

And personaly I don't have a problem with Americans, the very few I've met have been nice people.

I'm generalizing dude. Of course not all Americans are like that but the OP asked what the rest of the world thinks of America as a whole and whether you like it or not, in my experience that's the general viewpoint up here.

Its a national pastime for Canadians

Not even being sarcastic, Ive been making anti murica jokes since I was 7

Man I remember one time I got matched in a Gears of War match with 2 Canadians. I kept my mic muted but they were just talking to each other about Americans, fat, pigs, etc. I was just thinking what the hell is wrong with these people lmao. Looking back on it years later I still smile simply because it was so ridiculous and unexpected.

Party chat was the best thing and worse thing to happen to console gaming :(, I never hear anyone in lobbies now.
