In games like Dragon Quest, Pokemon, or other RPGs that give you the option of saying no even though you cannot refuse, I always go out of my way to say no. I'm an ass like that.

In games that genuinely give you the option to refuse... very seldom I refuse.

NPCs when you reject their quests:

I pretty much always accept quests because even if I don't end up doing them, a lot of them I'll do because, hey, I just happen to be in a position later to easily complete that quest I picked up.

If you play DQXI and don't say "no" any given chance, you're missing out. Big time.
I know but it still makes me feel bad!

Goddamn though, even though they're usually "but thou must" loops or treat it as if you said yes, the no answers got proper cutscene direction and everything. The flabbergasted reactions to no are delightful too.

The only reason to turn down a quest is if it's randomly generated and I don't want to see a quest alert flag on my interface.

I wish a game took advantage of players need to accept every quest. A game with a humor bent would benefit from it by handing out constant demeaning quests or terrible quests that don't leave your logbook unless you complete their tasks.
"Will you do something for me?"
"Go empty my chamber pot"
"Go kill that completely innocent shopkeeper"

Would teach you not to agree to everything at least in this game.

I answered "Rarely" but the truth is probably closer to "Never." If someone asks me to complete a sidequest, I can't really think of times I've said no, although I can think of plenty of times when I didn't actually do the quest. However, I did avoid all quests in The Witcher 3 relating to Gwent, but I don't think I actually told anyone I wouldn't do those quests, directly.

completely forgot about this. The 2 seconds of silence after you said no kept cracking me up when I first played the game.

"I WOULD NEVER FORCE OR COERCE ANYONE INTO JOINING THE BLADES"

*proceeds to threaten and/or coerce the PC into joining the blades*
I love the way he calls you "friend." He says it so harshly it makes me laugh every time.

I finished The Outer Worlds in 13 hours in my one and only play through. So I turned down just about everybody. Some people love to do all the side quests. I do them when I get a little bit bored, but other than that it's all main quest for me.

Most of the time it's a question of "Do you want to access more of the games content?" and I don't see any reason for not wanting to experience more of a game you like.
I think more games should just have other things happen if you don't accept the quest, so that it's a decision of which content you want to access.
But most of the time thats not the case.

Sometimes/Rarely. If a game is long and communicates pretty clearly that you don't need to finish all the side content to progress (Assassin's Creed Origins/Odyssey), or I'm just personally not feeling the design or rewards (Nier: Automata, The Outer Worlds), I'll try to stick to the main campaign before the experience grows stale.

Depends, AC:OD had a lot of fetch NPCs that asked you to get one thing or deal with one guy, did that once and told the rest to bugger off.

I usually do all other side quests, and often finish every side quest before moving on to the next area.

I only say no to quests if the game doesn't provide some sort of menu for tracking them. If I have to remember that random villager X in village Y needs x amount of items A, B and C for however long it takes me to get around to it, I'm not accepting the quest.

I accept them all and then leave them hanging forever, unless I happen to solve their problem naturally while taking care of the main quest.

I only declined side quests in one game and from one specific NPC. Fallout 4 and Preston Garvey.
No! I won't help any other settlement!

I've turned a few down in Death Stranding,lol......I'm loving the game and spent 20hrs delivering before I even reached Port Knot City but I still didn't do all the side deliveries(do they even end,I'm not sure, they are numbered so I guess there are only a certain amount).

Whenever there's a karma/faction system and they give me the wrong type of rep, and in rare cases when I really dislike what's being asked (Fuck the council! Though that was more multiple choice than yes/no)

I like when games let me say yes but ignore the sidequest completely, then maybe i do it if by coincidence it happens near my destination.

Sometimes I save my game and say no just to see the NPC's disappointment. Save to make sure I don't lose the quest.

I'm a sad min-maxer / must-see-everything type so I actually do say no to quests in Dragon Quest 11, just to see the reaction. Then I say yes.

My party and a selection of quest-giving NPCs hates me, this detached, passive-aggressive asshole of a hero.

i been doin' this for yeeeeaaaars

My only allegiance is to a clean and complete quest log.

Haha, well said.

If it's clearly an optional escort mission they can go F themselves right in their own A's. I ain't protecting your damn idiot AI morons that run straight toward trouble, nobody has time for that.

These poll results is why Fallout 4 took care of that problem for you and just never let you refuse anyone. If a game has no actual RPG mechanics and consequences it's obviously always take the quest. If there's a faction system or good writing and branching paths, of course I'll refuse some quests. It just has to be mechanically interesting to do so.

Never in most games, but there's the exception of games where it's clear there are actual (potentially bad for your intended roleplay) consequences for taking certain quests or doing obviously contradictory ones.

Depends on the game. If the sidequests are boring to me and don't add anything to the main story then I stick strictly to main quest because time is very limited for me. Back when i was a kid-teen, time was all i had, nowadays if i start a long game, despite side quests being kinda fun (most of them are not), i just stick to the main story to complete the game and that's it.

Never.
The only way I pass if they are generic and repeatable (the assassins creed origin random sidequests, thanfully, they are completely optional and theres real sidequest in the game).
Thats why I probably despise bethesda games, the real sidequests all feel random, generic and repeatable lol

Almost never, I just don't see the point. If I don't feel like doing sidequests in a game, I won't even waste time talking to random NPCs. You know that talking to them will initiate a quest, if you don't want to do it, why bother?

you go through the game once and do everything and be fuckin' dudley do right, that's your canon runthrough (because the sequel will pretend you did this anyway, most of the time)

then you play some other stuff

then you start a new game and play medieval/space bastard or whoever and start robbing farmers with broken down carts/punching nosey journalists

Never but I hate looking at lists of quests i have accepted and then I do none of them.

It's a vicious cycle.

I tend to do everything unless it's just plain evil.

I'm only picky choosing quests when the game has an interesting faction system, but that's unfortunately rare.

I often want to because I want to see the humorous way I'm forced into it anyway, but I almost never to do for fear I'll actually be turning it down.

I like when there are consequences for not completing a quest when you take them. The character reprimands you or it affects your standing with them.

Without that, I feel like I can just take very quest without worry and just let them pile up. No emotional involvement. And completing these often feels like, "oh yeah, totally forgot that was a thing I said I would do a month ago. Oh well."
