How was it acceptable for Valve to just .. not make Half Life 3?

It's pretty easy to accept. If there was no one at Valve who thought they could make a meaningful Episode 3/HL3, then I wouldn't want something they didn't believe in.

I have never cared about Half-Life. I know it's a big deal to a lot of people, but i'm more bummed projects like Mega Man Legends 3 and Project HAMMER got scrapped.

I feel like at this point it’s in the best interest of Valve to not make it u less they can be 10000% sure it will be the second coming of Jesus.

The millisecond it gets announced there would be too much of an expectation from the people that want it that it will have almost no chance of delivering on their vision of it.

They can make or not make whatever they want, but I do think it’s shitty the way they’ve strung people along and just lied about this game for 12 years now, and still continue to. Even in this thread you’ve still got people clinging to HL3 really happening someday because Valve will just not admit that, no, it’s not happening at all and hasn’t been for years.

It’s been reworked numerous times by now. It’ll be announced when they are ready to show the killer app for VR. Don’t worry it’ll be playable in non VR as well.

Nobody is listening to you, lol.

I'm there with ya, bud. Clear as day that Valve are moving to VR with Half Life and other fps games, but it seems most people here don't want to believe it or something.

Half Life VR itself may not be revealed with the Index, but it should be soon. I can't wait to see the responses here.

I also realize it won't be Half Life 3 so it won't have that story closure people want...but this is a good thing. I think there would be an actual protest if that happened on VR.
I think most people don't follow Valve very closely and don't know that it's a pretty open secret that Valve is currently working on Half Life VR based on code that keeps getting found in Source 2 game updates.
The thread when they finally announce Half Life VR (hopefully this Wednesday with the Index) is probably going to be a shitshow.

What kind of question is that? All because they didn't finish a story doesn't mean they should make a new one.
No but when they end on a cliffhanger to a beloved hugely influential franchise and announce a fucking sequel, they should make it.

No valve apologism please, they’re amazing in many ways but this was and will always be hugely shitty.

It's not acceptable. We should boycott steam/valve not only until they make half life 3, but they also only take a 12% cut of its revenue. Give the other 88% either as cash back to steam members, or give it directly to Epic.

Because valve has moved away from being developer to now being store front. Anything they make now is made with the typical online games model. They will never allocate the manpower to give us Portal 3 or Half-Life 3 ever.

Just look at Artifact. The time and money wasted on that game could have been so much better spent on anything but they instead made a GWENT/Hearthstone "competitor" that has a playerbase in the double digits.

You guys made fun of diablo on mobile but Valve best blizzard to that by making a game literally no one wanted or asked for. At all.

I used to hold valve in high esteem, but now I've put them in the same box as EA.

They clearly have chosen to go in another direction, which is their right to do. People can still have an opinion about it, and wish that they had kept making the kinds of games that they enjoyed.

I never got into half-life, but It's become such a big thing now, how could they ever live up to fan expectations? If it's anything other than a masterpiece how will the gaming community react?

It'll be No Man's Sky times 2356.

Nope, I think the major reason why is this, Half life is a relic of the past now, its still a great game sure, but outdated, I don't even know what to expect from a Half life 3

HL2 ep2 ended on quite a cliffhanger.

It'd be as if Infinity War came out, and then Marvel found another way of making money and lost interest in making movies and just never made the conclusion. People would be understandably pissed.

I'm very curious what the reaction is going to be when Valve publicly announces Half-Life VR.
Yeah I've believed for a while that valve only wanted to make Half-Life 3 once the VR tech was there. They don't want to just make a standard game.

Regardless of what fans and consumers want, no studio is required or OBLIGATED to make games they dont want to make.
It sucks but take a step back, breathe and get on with your life. At this point there are just plain better games out there for you to enjoy. Plus HL3 will never live up to the hype.

They promised Episode 3, we should've at least gotten that. According to Gabe the episodes are HL3, but we never got the ending, which sucks big time. I have not forgiven them. And there were a lot och backlash at the time. Steam should've just been a way for them to push out updates faster but instead they saw the money and chose to reinvent themselves...

According to wikipedia: In a May 2011 interview with Develop, Newell stated that the episodic model had been replaced by even shorter development cycles and continuous updates via Steam.

Remember this?

“we’re pretty sure that the $9.95 guys are going to get the better value, as we’ve been pretty good over the years at generating a lot of content.”

Yeah that would've been a great deal now 16 years later, thank god they backed down.

This is a summary of how Valve handled HL2 from announcement to release. Anyone interested in video game history will find it funny/sad, that a company like Valve could act like that and get away with it.

The sad thing is, they've lost a lot of the talent that made the original HL games, a third game wouldn't be the same.

It’s probably easier for them to maintain a service then it is to invest 5-6 years into a AAA title, and I’m sure they’re not looking forward to endless crunch time

Perfectly acceptable. They have every right to make or not make a product. And seriously, at this point, nothing they could do would meet the expectations fans have. It would be a big shitstorm.

So devs should be forced to make games?
No one can force anyone to make a game. They can, however, take them to task for the episodic structure and broken promises they made because they wanted to change course. People who follow this unfinished story have every right to be disappointed.

Reading the Epistle again

God damn it, it would have been such an epic game. You can tell from reading it how awesome everything would have been staged, in that unique old-valve flavour. And the endind sounds so awesome. People keep saying how a new game wouldnt have stacked up to expectations. But it totally would have. We have it right here, writen by the series writer. The series would've closed the doors on this particular character, Gordon Freeman. But left it open for future writers, just as he wanted. Such a shame how it all went down
