Changes
Aside from graphic revisions to fit the console specs, here are the distinct changes for this game.
- All DLC (including characters) are already in the vanilla version of the Nintendo Switch port.
- Players can use up to four playable characters in a stage.
- A new maximum level cap for weapons "Level 4+".
- Items Card Shop has been added in Adventure Mode, allowing players to purchase any previously earned item with rupees.
- The My Fairy section is rendered in 3D.
- Joy-Con co-op is available.
- Breath of the Wild costumes are available for Link and Zelda.
Two posts from pre-release threads detailing the value you're getting here:
This isn't just Hyrule Warriors ported to the Switch. It's not even Hyrule Warriors plus all the DLC ported to Switch. It's not even Hyrule Warriors plus the Wii U DLC plus the 3DS DLC.
It's Hyrule Warriors with rebalanced gameplay, improved frame rate, the Wii U DLC, the 3DS DLC, and the 3DS exclusive campaigns and content that the Wii U never even got. That's why it's called the god damn Definitive Edition. To get the same amount of content you would not just have to go buy the Wii U game and all of its DLC, but you would also need to buy the 3DS version and all of its DLC as well.
TO REITERATE
In order to have all the content in Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition you would need to buy the Wii U version, all Wii U DLC, the 3DS version, and all 3DS DLC. And you still wouldn't have a comparable game because of all the QOL enhancements they made to the Switch port.
Well if you do that, here's what you're looking for:
Hyrule Warriors (Wii U) - $15
Hero of Hyrule Pack (Wii U) - $20
Legends of Hyrule Pack (Wii U) - $10
Hyrule Warriors Legends (3DS) - $30
Legends of Hyrule Pack (3DS) - $15 (this comes with content not in the Wii U DLC pack)
+ possible cost of buying a Wii U or 3DS if you don't have one or the other for all the content since it's split across two versions (won't factor into total)
Grand total: $90
As opposed to...
Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition (Switch)
+ graphical improvements
+ framerate improvements
+ gameplay improvements
+ minor bonus content (skins)
Grand total: $60
Breath of the Wild costumes for Link and Zelda
