I get what you mean. Whenever a big news story happens I tend to go to /v and /a. What helped me is focusing on something else and stop trying to go on everyday. I'm still addicted, but being busy with something else will eventually make you forget about 4chan. I still go on /a as it's one of the better discussion places for older anime and seasonal anime. I hate reddit too so I get you.

Delete your bookmarks.
Open your history, search for 4chan, and delete everything there.

The next time you try to type the URL, you'll force yourself to type the whole thing. There's 10 characters you need to type to go there. Stop yourself before you finish.

Sounds like you want to leave. You can do it. Remove the bookmarks or the apps that get you there and soon you'll forget about it. If you want to risk viewing CP for the price of RE memes then, well, I'm glad I'm not your lawyer. Do yourself a favour and find a nicer place to lay your sweet head.
Yeah you just gotta quit 'cold turkey'. Log out, delete the web history involving it and fill the void with something else. Listen to music instead.

I visit /gif/ sometimes and only when I am feeling truly depraved. But it's not an addiction of any sort.

I don't keep bookmarks, my internet history is deleted by default when I close the browser.

If I could keep away for 2 months, I can keep away for longer. During that time I just filled the gaping hole by posting on Era more.
I only had the account since november, so I was unable to post before then, I lurked for the longest time.

go to 2 chan. or play games.
fakk.

you don't realize it, but yo're probably getting some kind of satisfaction from the neurochemicals when you browse, so you may have an actual addiction to curb.

the way i quit sites is to block 'em in Avast. my Avast settings also requires a password and i've written that password (which is a random strings of characters) down on a paper that i've stored away in an inconvenient place in my house. on top of that i block the site in my host files and through my router. i have a pretty addictive personality as well so i need to do this, not to mention quitting websites is hard in general because it was so built into my routine and auto-pilot.

this is how i was able to quit a lot of sites that were a blackhole to my productivity (or became toxic to my mental health) including sites like 4chan.

I got randomly permabanned in 2015, so it certainly helps...

Don't get addicted to posting on forums, it's not good. Even when you get banned from one place you can simply fall back on another one.
Honestly it may be a good idea to just not spend all your free time in forum boards. If you take time to read, play video games, watch a movie or documentary, exercising, etc. it'd greatly reduce the time spent on forum boards.

I have a serious problem with internet addiction in general.

Just stop. Block the address in your hosts file if it'll stop you visiting. Remind yourself every time you try to that it's a bad idea.

I used 4chan from ages 13-17. Leaving was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It really is a cesspit.

start using twitter
start using reddit

both are super fast and super addictive, and twitter you can block shitheads and never have to see their posts again

idk, I used to browse a lot of shitty websites full of hate and it was easy enough to ignore bc "I didn't agree with it" but idk if it's an age thing or just a "completely changed my circle of friends" thing, but visiting sites filled with hate and negativity hurts too much, i'm so used to being around people who actually care about things and who care about my feelings as a person, that dropping myself into a environment where that isn't the case just doesn't feel great

already have to deal with that in the real world, why subject yourself to that in your leisure time

Are you doing your part to make it any better though? You yourself said you "shitpost", so wouldn't you be contributing to the problem if that is truly the case?

Here is a scenario. On /vr/, another blue board (blue boards are safe for work boards, still 18+ of course) about gaming to those not versed in this sort of thing, there are lots of great hardware threads. Because things are so on-topic, you see less shit, but if you do, the janitors seem to be fairly quick to take care of things. I bring this up because sometimes in CRT threads, racist content and off topic convos do get posted, but people report it and it gets taken care of. Remember, racism and trolling is not allowed outside of /b/. If you see something out of guidelines, report it. You can always hide offending posts too, or use an extension as a more comprehensive blocker.

Basically...

1. If it isn't making you happy to visit and post there, stop posting. I know you say you are hooked, but sometimes we have to make a deep effort to stop and take a look back and admit that if something is making us miserable, we owe it to ourselves to stop. Install a content blocker for it or any other websites you care not to see.

2. If you are going to post, don't shitpost and actually contribute to a thread or topic. Don't add to the problem, instead do something constructive for the thread you are in, as you would in any other community.

3. If you see shitposting, derailing, racism, trolling, illegal content, etc, just report it (just as you would report something innapropriate on Era).

4. If you do plan on staying, Stay on the blue boards. I myself have only been on blue boards and am happy that they got segregated as 4channel, away from 4chan.

5. Realize that like reddit, 4chan is at the end of a day an image-based discussion platform with hundreds of sub communities. Maybe get off /v/ and talk about some toons on /co/, or post your laptop stickers on /g/ or find your next favorite wallpaper on /w/. There's gonna be shit, but a lot of good stuff too. There's good and bad people everywhere, so the important thing to remember is that wherever you go, since you are the only one you can control, always be a good person.

Just some thoughts on the matter. Regardless of what you decide, I wish you nothing but the best. Remember that if it isn't brining you joy, you don't have to go there, you can quit. It may be hard, but it could be worth it.

I used 4chan from ages 13-17.
You shouldn't have been on it at all at that age. It's an 18+ community.

Computer screen light keeps you awake, and talking with people online keeps you busy.
You need to get yourself together man, this is a waste of time you could spend sleeping, and it's not good for your health.
Not that I don't have similar issues though.

Careful those images don't get saved on your computer somewhere and you get Amiroxed
CP is surprisingly quite rare on /v/, nobody want's to see it and people get mad when someone posts it (Animated porn aside).
I only saw it once in 5 years, and I instantly deleted all caches and didn't go back for a while.

I've currently closed all 4chan Tabs I had open, and I'm telling myself I won't open it again. Only time will tell if I succeed.

I know, but like goddanm, posting and browsing helps the pain go away. This has become my daily routine for the past 3 months, which have all become a fuckin blur since I'm not taking any classes, and am currently looking for a job so I can graduate. I have probably left my house like 5 times since the year has started, and that has mostly just been for movie night, which I have at my brother's every other weekend. I would go places, but I still need a car. I always mean to get up and be productive by holy fuck I fall into the same traps every single goddamn day. At least next week I'm looking forward to going back up to pay a surprise visit to my college roommates. That should be fun. But anyway, I'm done rambling; I hope all you had a wonderful day, but I am fuckin done. Have a fantastic night. Peace.

The place is a shit hole, and you can see how its racist, hate-filled rhetoric, gets spread around so easily.

These mass shootings are directly tied to 4chan fucking culture.

Maybe you should think about therapy or counselling. If seeing Child porn didn't completely deter you from going there forever, that should be a significant red flag about your inability to control your decision making in regards to your online habits. If your life is so barren that you indulge in experiences in places that compromise your moral or ethical sensibilities, then perhaps focusing on trying to attend to yourself outside of your online habits would be a healthy approach to working out what's going on with you. You have the power to do so, even if you don't feel or can't see it right now.

It's technically 8chan, but frankly 4chans /pol/ pretty much has the same spirit of the place.

The recent mass shooting is essentially why I created this thread.

Try switching to a different *chan. There are a lot of 4chan/world4ch-style boards out there and while some are certainly way worse, a lot of them retain the qualities of 4chan (anonymous posting, easy file uploads, chronological view with threaded replies) and don't have something like /pol/ shitting up each and every thread. A lot of old users have switched to different sites and it shows.
Don't shitpost on nice boards, tho.

It's not contained to just /pol. It's infested every board. Half of /fit threads turn into racist tirades. Even the safest of boards, like /wsg, are full of that bullshit.

I literally just checked and a fucking Tiktok thread has Tiktok's edited with footage from the shooting.

Fuck 4chan.

Anything of value from 4chan gets filtered onto sites like here, reddit and Facebook so I'm not really seeing your problem with leaving...

Edit:

Except for Adult GIF. Best part of the site and the only section I ever visit.

Get a job that keeps you from checking your phone, like a truck driver or a mail carrier. Work long hours, such that when you get home, all you want to do is sleep.

Fucking /gif has threads dedicated to white supremacy and you guys are saying it's somehow the only standout board because of porn (that you can get anywhere)?

There's something to be said about 4chan that's more truthful than anything...

It is the last bastion of free speech left on the internet
Sort of a wild west of discussion
Surely it's like drinking dogshit water doused in gasoline but every now and again it's pure magic diamonds that no where else on the net could even hope to replicate
Not GAf not even era can touch the magicity of 4chans heights of lengendary magicdom

Era and GAF cud turn into turds but 4chan is evergreen golden

Also, OP, do yourself a favor, install 4chanX and filter content you dislike. It will be slow at first, but due to the repost-heavy nature of most boards you will eventually be presented with a clean catalog.

You could always install a browser "focus" plugin and just add 4chan to the blocklist.

I use those sometimes at work so I don't waste time on Reddit and stuff.

You need to find an enjoyable replacement habit. Pick something you like doing and that you can do in most of the places where you browse 4chan. When you feel the urge, practice doing that thing instead.

Those 2 months began when I opened a spoilered picture and got greeted with CP. Only saw it for a split second, but It was burned into my mind. But the place is addicting as all hell. I got lured back by the promise of Resident Evil memes

CP being child porn? Assuming so, then what the actual fuck. If child porn isn't enough to make you stay away from the place then you have a serious issue. I'm baffled anyone would risk seeing and being associated with child porn because of resident evil memes.

Because it's seriously rare, and on the very rare occasion it does turn up, mods usually get to it first, or the reply's will tip you off to the fact you shouldn't open it.
Still, I shouldn't have gone back anyway. 4chan is an addiction to for me, and a big problem.

You're addicted to the internet. Don't just vacate from 4chan, leave here and all social media. use web filters to block 4chan and all of the chans specifically, and then just avoid using social media. Delete the apps, deactivate accounts if you need to, and pick up some extra hobbies. Maybe hit up a library and grab some books if you haven't read a book in a few years.

Use other things to occupy that space; draw, play video games, watch movies. Don't do anything that's vaguely similar to browsing a message board. Then slowly come back. Start with twitter, then Era, then reddit. Leave the chans blocked.

Consider the fleeting nature of memes and other fast moving content on the internet? How much of what you've seen do you remember? Is it worth your time?

Sure, but I think it's probably the most significant red flag for how this addiction has screwed your ability to think like a rational person. The fact you deem the potential for child porn a risk worth taking for memes should be a huge wake up moment.

Which it seems to be, so that's good. Honestly, I think you have to cut yourself off via the methods others have said, blockers, passwords, whatever; physically make it difficult to access the place and find something ideally more appropriate/healthier to fill the hole whenever the urge presents itself. It'll be tough no doubt.
