I finally figured out the History channel's brand.

I have next to zero interest in blacksmithing, forging, or metallurgy, but I will kill the hell out of 6 hours during a Forged in Fire Marathon. Tell me to watch dudes did through a hoarder's stash and i will say fuck you, but put it on a sunday afternoon and i am all in.

That is History Channel's brand, shit you wouldn't watch weekly if your life depended on it, but will devour it in marathon like nothing else in life matters. For real "I got nothing else going on but I got these chips and alcholol, i am not going to agree Knight Temeplars hid time traveling UFOs on Oak island, but I will at least listen to the argument"

Ancient Aliens is Brain Meth and I love it. It’s so dumb but just maybe. Just maybe. It could be true.

I love how it gets stupider as it goes on. Like season one was your standard stonehenge, pyramids etc. Stuff that at least has a kernel of "who knows, maybe". By season 10 they are like "maybe all mythological creatures actually existed as a result of alien hybrid experiments, lets find a gryphon."

The narrator have you thinking "maybe these folks are on to something", he is too good at his job
Like I see how someone can totally fall into the rabbit hole. Like HOW so many civs made fucking pyramids and no no there’s no way they interacted it HAS to be aliens with multi arms and looking like half-dogs half person! Lmao.

Lmao it truly is the gateway drug to full on conspiracy theory. Fucked me up when they started talking about the Mahabharata and flying machines and shit. Lmao.

edit: conspiracy catnip it’s totally conspiracy catnip.

I just miss old school History and Discovery Channel programming.

I’m the old guy who says everything was better when I was younger BUT IT’S TRUE

This is me with Deadliest Catch. I’d never watch a single Ep standalone, but by God, I will binge the shit out of a Saturday marathon

Science channel goes down the unexplained/UFO rabbit hole too much, but sometimes they do just spend a whole day on cool shows about (non-alien) astronomy shit at least.

My grandfather used to call it the Hitlery Channel back when their programming was nothing but shows about Hitler and the SS.

I miss the Hitler Channel.
I kinda don't.

I mean, yes, it was actual history compared to the alien garbage they have now. But I'm starting to think that the rise of the Alt-Right and Hitler apologists online was in no small part due to the History Channel's borderline fetishization of the man and everything he did...

Something I just discovered last night after never hearing of Forged in Fire before: you can watch on YouTube and skip over the bog standard reality TV forced melodrama and talking head cutaways of bearded middle aged white guys saying how they really hope their sword does a good job and they are nervous but they want to win the money, and just watch the parts where they hack away at an ice block until a sword breaks or a ballistics dummy is disemboweled

lol OP is speaking the truth, although I wouldn't say I don't care at all, but it's something where I wouldn't care to go out of my way to watch those shows, but when there is a marathon and I'm flipping through channels, my inner latent curiosity to learn about blacksmithing or see them talk about history through things people are pawning off in Pawn Stars, I'll get sucked in.

Say what you will about The History Channel, but they do occasionally put out some watchable shit.

The Men who Built America is a great little docu-series. I used to inhale shit like Modern Marvels.

They've taken the formula places. Like they made a show that is Forged With Fire but with Tim Allen.

And I watched all of it the other day.

Modern Marvels for me. Like I don't really care about trains but you bet your ass I'll watch an hour long show telling me all about them

I miss the actual shows about history but I do love me some Pawn Stars for all the weird crap they show even though the show is staged.

I wonder if anyone believes the customer is waiting at the store while they get the expert to come in, or thinks the experts are all on hand just in case they are needed lol

Remember Biography on A&E? That thing was fire. Same with True Hollywood stories on E!.

I miss those shows.
