I hate the Switch's capacitive touch screen

It's a game console, not a phone, and capacitive touch screens suck for drawing. The Wii U's gamepad was at least great for drawing. It, like every previous Nintendo device with a touch screen, was resistive and any old plastic stylus would work fine. Even with a fancy "made for capacitive screens" stylus, drawing is still a hair tearing experience on a capacitive screen. All I want to do is freestyle a post on Splatoon 2.

Does anyone else hate the capacitive screen or do you have something nice to say about it? There's your next Splatfest theme: Capaitive VS Resistive.

I don't give two shits about drawing. Capacitive is much better for simple navigation. Touch screen games too, but I don't play any on Switch. Messing with a stylus is clunky for navigation etc.

I'm sorry they didn't compromise the rest of the entire UX so you could draw a squid in splatoon.

I also preferred the resistive touchscreen on Wii U. Entering letters and numbers on the Switch with your fingers is particularly frustrating in the eShop (inaccuracy or nothing inputting occasionally after keypress), but that could be an issue with the eShop interface itself.

I really miss Miiverse the most, though.

It's worse for drawing, and it might be worse for mario maker, but better for everything else.

Back in my days we used paper and a pencil. If we're feeling fancy, we would use a pen.

Damn yoots!

I'm also for capacitive touch-screens as they are all around better for most things and drawing on them can also be amazing with the necessary hardware, see the Apple iPad with the Apple Pencil, I can draw better with that thing than I can draw on paper, let alone resistive-screens.

Rip miiverse.

At least it's not squishy. Also it can detect more than one finger at once so touch-based rhythm games work. I hope they bring Cytus over some day.

The screen of the Wii U GamePad feels like it's covered by cheap, squishy, ondulated plastic that feels like shit... Because it is. What the Switch needs, if anything, is a laminated screen to help with reflections and give more space for the battery and cooling. Not one of those terrible screens.

I hated resistive. It was awful.

I'm not sure if the Switch uses ultracheap capacitive glass but capacitive caught up and excelled resistive screens for precision a while ago to my understanding (it was a major comparison point during the Galaxy S3 days and since stopped being an issue), while the higher end use active stylus + Capacitive screens.

Just buy a capacitive stylus?

Can't believe there are actually people out there who prefer resistive touchscreens, especially after more than a decade of capacitive being the norm for mobile devices. I am glad that Nintendo is finally letting go of them.

A capacitive touchscreen can be just as good (if not better) for drawing, with the right tool.

For the Wii U, 3DS and especially the DS resistive was the right choice because a lot of games were built around stylus control but I think capacitive was correct for Switch as it's mainly used for navigation and isn't the main gameplay input

I always forget the switch even has a touch screen, I wonder if they could bring the price down by removing it?

I get where OP is coming from, and I’m going to be super bummed if Super Mario Maker comes out with no real easy way to draw on the screen. That said, for general use, I much prefer the capacitive screen.

Huh... I never thought I'd read someone genuinely preferring resistive over capacitive but here we are..

I'm very happy that the Switch has a capacitive screen. It would have been terrible in normal use if they had used a resistive screen. The plastic surface isn't very nice, but I put tempered glass on mine and it now feels a lot better, it also doesn't smudge quite as badly.

I personally would've preferred Nintendo ditch touchscreens altogether for the Switch, but I figure the extra cost for a 6" touchscreen over a normal LCD was so negligible Nintendo said "Why not? Throw it in". The touchscreen functionality is such an afterthought I keep forgetting it's even there.

No, leave the resistive screens in the past where they belong.

And really I can do without the touchscreen on the switch altogether.

I really enjoyed the mapping in the Etrian Odyssey and there were a few great applications of the resistive touch screens on both the 3DS and Wii U. I am surprised there is so much hate about them here. I think those screens set themselves apart from the phones/tablets and allowed you to do different stuff with them as a result.

Worse for one use case vs. better for almost all others.

I'll take the capacitive.

I agree. I appreciate the more precise and responsive input of the resistive screens in the past.

But the thing is that you can actually use both resistive and capacitive technologies at the same time, but I don't know why nobody has tried that. The closest I've seen is in modern laptops that have a capacitive screen and supports a Wacom or n-trig stylus.

Nintendo got so much flack for using a resistive touch screen for Wii U. So for Switch they finally go with a more modern capacitive screen, and then people complain and want the Wii U screen back. What is real anymore?

I really love what Samsung does with the Notes. I use my S-pen pretty much all the time with it.

I'd love to have something like that on the Switch.

Yeah its a game console, so why the fuck do you want to draw on it?
Okami, The World Ends With You, Splatoon, you know, games that involve drawing.

Maybe, just maybe, the people complaining now, weren’t complaining then.

Resistive with a stylus is much better with precision.

TWEWY is going to suck with a capacitive screen. The only benefit the switch ver will have over the phone is that the screen is bigger and is less likely to screw over my big hands.
