I will forever hate how the Simpsons callously killed off Snowball II.

Granted, because Status Quo is God on that show, they get a new cat that looks exactly like Snowball II and decide to call her Snowball II and pretend the whole thing never happened which is like "Yeah, whatever." But it always bothered me as to how callously the show killed off Snowball II, as a cat owner, it always annoyed me how there was never an episode centered around Snowball II while Santa's Little Helper got plenty of episodes. Sure, both animals get treated badly at times, but at least with SLH, you get the sense that he's still a part of the family, while Snowball II is treated as expendable. This has always been one of the show's missteps, out of so many episodes they've done, they NEVER did an episode whose main plot was about Snowball II. Come on Simpsons writers, treat Snowball II well, make it so it's obvious she's a part of the family. Cats are part of the family. I should know.

I disagree, I thought that whole episode was pretty funny.

I had a cat named Snowball.
She died, she died.
Mom said she was sleeping.
She lied, she lied.
Why oh why is my cat dead?
Couldn’t that Chrysler have hit me instead
I had a cat named Snowball.
She died.

Of all the egregious things Simpsons has pulled, this does not list imho.

The whole episode is a meta-commentary on the lack of change in a show like the Simpsons, no?

Can we get a synopsis? I'm barely remembering some things, but I don't recall the cat ever being important.

Since OP didn’t include it:

Meanwhile, Snowball II gets run over by Dr. Hibbert's car and is killed. After Marge reads the book When Bad Things Happen To Cute Children, she and Lisa go to the animal shelter and adopts a new cat. Unfortunately, Snowball III(pictured above) drowns trying to catch fish in the Simpsons' fish tank and Coltrane, aka Snowball IV, commits suicide by falling out the window after listening to the music of the original musician John Coltrane. When Lisa and Marge try to get another cat (yet again), the owner of the cat sanctuary refuses to give Lisa anymore cats. While sitting outside, the Crazy Cat Lady throws a cat at Lisa that looks exactly like Snowball II. Lisa sends it away, thinking it will die if it is with her. When the cat walks away, a car, owned by Gil is about to hit it, but the car misses and drives into a tree and explodes. Observing that the cat didn't get run over, Lisa takes it in. In order to save money on food dishes and to forget any of these tragedies ever happened, she names it Snowball II, even though it is technically Snowball V. When Principal Skinner sees and criticizes this, Lisa reminds him of his other name "Tamzarian," so Skinner accepts this.

There is an episode focused on Snowball V later, though. I'ts from the garbage seasons so it's atrocious.

I mean...we're talking about a show that killed off Maude Flanders like this:

Killing a cat and replacing it is nothing.

I doubt they thought about this episode that much honestly, the episode is about Homer getting hurt while fighting robots and cats dying. I guess they were trying to pull emotional ride for Lisa/Homer-Bart relationship with slapstick comedy bits... well...

Anyway, this blog entry says in the commentary of the episode Al Jean tells the Tamzarian joke got in because he hated the “The Principal and the Pauper”:
https://deadhomersociety.com/2013/06/12/i-annoyed-grunt-bot-makes-baby-jesus-cry/
17:35 – Sepinwall asks about the Armin Tamzarian joke in this one. (Lisa says that the new cat will be called Snowball II and that they’ll pretend none of this ever happened, after which, in a very Zombie Simpsons move, Skinner mysteriously walks by to note that’s a cheat and have Lisa call him “Principal Tamzarian”.) Jean explains that he put the joke in, and that he wasn’t running the show when they did that most infamous of episodes, and that he “never got that Tamzarian thing”. Since he’s ever the pro, Jean casually notes that it was a great year for the show even as he’s taking a dump on it. (There’s an alternate universe where Jean is the world’s most effective PR spokesman and he’s even richer than he is here.)

18:05 – Groening, in outrage that may or may not be mock, says he didn’t like it but was assured that it would be good.

18:10 – Wow, this is way more interesting than this episode. Jean recounts, “Then when I investigated afterwards, I said to Scully, did you like it? He goes, no. Did Matt Groening? No. Did George? No. Did Jim? No. It’s like, how did it go through? Every box had to be checked no.”

18:35 – And they’re still bagging on “The Principal and the Pauper”. This is great.

19:30 – After laughing at the fact that Homer’s butt was on screen, we get back to complimenting the animation because there really isn’t much else to talk about here.

So the whole thing was a joke at the episode’s expense?

You might have to remind some of us how they killed off Snowball II. It's been so long.
Dr. Hibbert accidentally runs her over.

Cue a b plot where Lisa buys a lot of cats and they die one after the other until the pet shelter tells her and marge that they're not allowed to get more cats.

By chance Lisa finds a black cat identical to SB2 and adopts her after she causes a car crash, figuring that the car swerving to not hit her means she is a "good luck cat".

When she names her Snowball 2, Skinner shows up and mentions how cheap that is, to which Lisa replies referencing the principal and the pauper to get Skinner to shut up.

I didn't like how Snowball and Snowball II were so overlooked in comparison to Santa's Little Helper either. But I'm much more of a cat fan.

They even did a callback to one of the worst "didn't happen" episodes of the Simpsons, was it to apologize for the shit episode or were they being smarmy? How long ago did this happen?

Oh, this was post Principal and the Pauper?
No wonder it didn't sound familiar.

Their cat barely ever makes any appearances, it almost doesn’t exist at all.
