*skimming thread* Yeah, something like the NPVIC seems vaguely feasible over the next decade or so. I think *continuing to skim( in the face of a revitalized national leftist movement something like that could go along way to *continuing to skim thread* making up for the fact that the electoral college is defined in the constitution and would require an amendment and *stops skimming* hold on back up

But concept of democracy will be obsolete pretty soon when AI/ AI based institutions can dictate effective policies.

uhhhhhhhhhh what

Heed this warning. If nothing substantial changes he will win next year easily. The electoral college is all that matters and it favours Republicans because it give equal voice to less populated rural areas. Or, Trump Country.

The Kentucky and Virginia election results are giving people false hope. Many of you here are ignorant to the realities of the the situation.

Or if you read the rest of my post instead of deleting it so you can pretend I presented no further argument.

It doesnt matter if you even out the states ev. Its inherently undemocratic because its a winner take all.

You can lose a state by one vote and get nothing, you can win a state by 99% and you dont get extra.

The system is working as intended, my vote in oklahoma is meaningless, only a handful of swing states matter.

I dunno maybe flyover country doesn't want to be powerless and dictated to by the shit stained, electricity deprived inferno of homelessness that is Utopian California.

If we had a popular vote instead of electoral vote, the agricultural states with small populations would simply be ignored because it wouldn't be necessary to listen to their concerns. Very democratic.
This, incidentally, is not even true. The Electoral College does not advantage "small" or "agricultural states", it advantages states that are the most evenly contested between the two parties. Some of those are small, but others are larger; and plenty of small "flyover" states are effectively rendered irrelevant by the EC because they are so solidly Republican that neither party bothers to campaign there.

In fact, none of the smallest states (three electoral votes) are swing states.

Pretty simple solution:

1. Don't abolish the electoral college.

2. Add DC and Puerto Rico as states. Boom, 4 more Senate seats.

3. Impeach Kavanaugh. Ask RBG to retire. Boom, 2 supreme court justices. Also impeach all the lower court justices who are incompetent. Stack the shit out of the courts.

4. Repeal the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929, which limits # of seats in the house to 435. Boom, House is yours forever.

5. Start pushing for a constitutional convention under the pretext of 1 citizen = 1 vote.

Boom, America is now saved. If the GOP has a problem w/ it tell them to get fucked.

If Trump carries the same handful of states that put him over the last time, they really need to ditch the electoral college and it's ability to let a small group of nutters hold a whole country hostage.
So what's the answer than? If we abolish the EC no state but Texas, California, New York, and Florida would ever see a presidential candidate. Why spend resources anywhere else but the 10 most populous states? I agree that the EC is flawed but presidential elections without them would make truly the fly over states not even worth dropping pamphlets. As someone from a small state I appreciate candidates coming to Vegas and listening and caring about our issues. It just wouldn't be the case if we didn't have the EC.

1. Get $100,000
2. Pay off loans

Simple!

In my opinion, if Trump gets his 2nd term, the end of it will be like what happened with Obama's term ending. The swing from Trump to the Democrat winner will be so extreme, it'll make Republicans kill themselves, and they rightly deserve it. Remember, Trump's popularity will end in 8 years, and I doubt it will endure beyond, once those 8 years end, thats it, the cult of trump is dead.
We shall soon have a new Trump. One far younger...and more powerful (read: hotter)

Canada
Amending the constitution to remove or reform the electoral college would require three-fourths of the states to ratify the amendment. Most of these states would lose power in federal elections by removing the electoral college.
For reference British Columbia which has some of the most left leaning politics in Canada just had a reform vote to replace our first past the post system and it lost badly. Sorry but you have no hope . Better if you had more parties tbh

This is whack. If candidates were competing for votes instead of states, they'd still spend money and time in places with good return per dollar. Vegas would still be worth visiting.

If you live in bumfuck nowhere, you've got a representative and probably a senator to carry your provincial issues to D.C.

What everyone is discussing in this thread, the EC.

So you think some sudden realization we have an electoral college renders all previous analysis void? Did you read the article? There are no changing facts or new pieces of data to support this doomsday scenario. It's given as merely possible and a bunch of you are tripping over yourselves about it.

Guy "jokes" about having more than two terms and there's not a power structure to stop him. By all means vote and try, but I can't shake the feeling we're riding this one out till he dies in office.

On Inauguration Day 2021 or 2025 he ceases to be president no matter what he says. There's absolutely nothing he can do to change that.

He would be escorted out of office by the secret service.

The GOP arent going to risk everything for someone they dont like or need. If democrats win in 2020 the republicans know they'll dominate the midterms in 2022 and cripple any legilsation that a D president tries to pass and they'll be in great shape for 2024.

They'll pretend like trump doesnt exist the moment losses or finishes his 2nd term, and they'll replace him with someone whos not a complete dumb ass and actually knows how to legislate and wont admit to felonies on a weekly basis.

Everytime I hear people whining about Trump not winning the popular vote I roll my eyes. He did a ton of campaign rallies in swing states, Hillary did less of that. The swing states came out for him. If he needed the popular vote to win he probably wouldn't have done it that way.

People want to abolish the electoral college because that would be be bad for republicans then complain about the system being rigged, fucking hypocrites would rig it so hard in their favour if they could.

I dunno maybe flyover country doesn't want to be powerless and dictated to by the shit stained, electricity deprived inferno of homelessness that is Utopian California.

Also worth pointing out that winning the electoral vote but losing the popular vote has happened a whopping 4 times in the last 2 centuries and that even if 2016 was a popular vote election, Clinton would not have had a plurality of votes

Maybe the real problem is that the US President has WAY too much power rather than smaller states getting ignored, and that even a proper representative parliamentary system would help ensure that smaller groups, areas, people, etc get represented appropriately nonetheless.

Or sure, the person with the most votes loses, yay. Real good democracy there.

You need a constituency within the government to pull off a coup like that.

You think the FBI/CIA/Military Leadership are throwing their lot in with Trump for life?

His base may be a mix of footsie playing fascists to full-blown, but they aren't going to overthrow the government.

I'll never understand why people think this. If he loses it's not his choice if he leaves or not. He will have to leave or be arrested. Even if he somehow was able to delay the inauguration of the next president he still wouldn't remain president. It would go the speaker of the house who would have Trump arrested or shot.

Because it's bad for republicans.

It's not that simple. There was bipartisan support for an amendment in 1969, the House passed the amendment by a vote of 339 to 70. Yet went it got to the Senate it was filibustered by senators from small states and was never put up for a vote. What goes unsaid in this discussion is that swing states like having that power.

Seriously. Government is not just going to continue with Trump calling the shots as if the election didn't happen.

This isn't the argument you want to make really. Lots of people don't get visits from presidential candidates. Lots of people can't afford to go when they do visit. I lived in SanFrancisco for 2 elections and never had a candidate within spitting distance once. I lived in Iowa as a kid and they visited my grade school multiple times. To talk to fucking 4th graders. Its meaningless. ESPECIALLY now when you can watch the latest campaign rally on your phone if you care. The argument you want to make is that issues important to rural states won't be addressed by the executive branch without the EC. That's also bullshit, but it plays better at least.

Like, I was fed that shit a lot as a kid growing up. "No one would even come here without the EC". It sounds nice when you live there, then you grow up and move to California and realize its just a shitty way to make some voices count less than others. But for some reason its the city slickers who get yelled at about not empathizing enough with the plight of rural places. Its bullshit.

Even now candidates throw events in small towns, not because their votes matter, but because it gives a good appearance on the big screen media. They'll bus in people from neighboring towns to try and fill it up just for the sake of appearances. That shit isn't going to stop if the EC is gone. Candidates still want to look like someone "down to earth" and try to distance themselves from the rich, privileged lifestyles.

Uh, he doesn't have a choice in that matter. Secret Service, Police, or Military will escort him out, of necessary. Trump is a scum bag, but he won't allow himself to be dragged out in handcuffs on national television. He'll leave.

Well, yeah. But there is no incentive now for republicans to change the system and its not likely to change any time soon.

Sorry I don t really give a shit if 1000 people from Iowa can have a voice if it means 10k from a large city can't. My vote should mean just as much as a person in bumfuck nowheres ville. We are a democracy or we are not. Choose

States are not monoliths.

91 million of the 127 million trump/hillary voters were in states other than those four.

Florida and Texas had more Hillary supporters than all but two states. California was Trump's 3rd best state and New York was his 6th best state in terms of # of supporters.

Doesn't the electoral distributions get updated by population census? So the more populous blue costal states should continue to gain electoral votes and eventually become more favourable to democrats?
