I'm a white guy and I'm fucking sick of racism.

I don't really have that much to say here, I'm not looking to start a discussion about this. It's just that now after France won the WC I've been fighting with other (white) people about their casual usage of the N-word. Both in real life and on Facebook. Idiots posting images of the team arguing they shouldn't have been playing for France because reasons (hint: it's because they're black ofc). I just had almost literally a fight with someone that used to be a well known public figure in my home country over him asking "why is nigger considered offensive by niggers". Not joke. He then called me defending other races "a prejudice" and "a blind following of foreign written concepts". Whatever the fuck that even means to him. Others even said "nah let's call em niggers" because they didn't care a bit. I'm fucking ashamed of my own race. I dunno what my point here is, I just needed to vent for a bit.
I guess I can say this:
To the people of color here, please don't think we're all the same. Some of us are baffled by the white ignorance. I've been personally fighting this fucking bullshit for years, back when I used to live in the US and now in Europe again. We're not all racist cunts, I swear.

To my fellow white people. Please, fight for the other races too. We can't just ignore it because it never happens to us. People's lives get destroyed everyday because of their skin color. You see someone black/asian/etc. being stereotyped or even worse? Fight against that. One of the few ways we can at least mitigate this to an extent is to fight it from within.

Ugh. I guess that's all I got. Thanks to whoever read this...

Same.

People need to get this race stick out of their ass and learn to not be shitty in general. Like, it's not hard people. See that guy over there? Don't be an asshole. Done.

Growing up has been a pretty eye opening experience because I was weaned on GOP conservatism and never met somebody who wasn't white until I was well into my teens. Going to college was an intense shock (by design: I intentionally went as far away as i could from where I grew up) and now i can barely relate with the environment I grew up in. Benign casual prejudice borne out of ignorance and disinterest

Essentially this
I Don't Know How To Explain To You That You Should Care About Other People

I vaguely remember the WC 1998 win evoking similar reactions albeit with no social media for people to be public asses about it. I've basically learned to ignore comment sections unless I feel like hate-reading.

Push back against racism man, of course, but this shit will not be healthy for you. If you can fight back without this, then I think you'll be able to do it a lot better while having a healthier dispostion.

If you're of the opinion then that it's daft to feel pride for being born a certain skin colour and taking in pride in acheivements that you've taken no direct part in, then the opposite holds true as well.

Where I grew up I didn't experience it a whole lot (given its a not very culturally diverse place, the major thing here was bigotry/xenophobia which is similar I guess). But since reaching adult life and getting to know the world a bit more it is very sad how apparent this is.

As you've alluded to OP, I've seen people I thought of as okay mentioning that its hardly France that won the World Cup but some Africans, not outright racial slurs but can clearly see what they're suggesting. The world is a bit shit

Call out the bullshit when you see it.
But self loathing of your own race probably isn't particularly healthy or productive.

Just keep fighting for what's right. It's all you can do. Never let it drive you to being a martyr though, because you're needed in the fight.

Racism (and particularly hate) isn't going to end in our (or anyone's) lifetimes. It's going to keep morphing/"evolving" into something new. Hopefully you won't suffer from too much of its effects and also get some value from it. I don't believe in eternal salvation but you can get it in your lifetime (salvation to me is just peace).

That's actually what I mean. I know it's easy for us to ignore the stupid comments, I've done it before too, but it's not the way imo. Letting morons do their own thing isn't what we should be doing.

Oh I agree with both of you. I'm trying not to but it's getting difficult.

All you can do is oppose it. Anyone, of any colour or race, can be racist. It's about sticking to what you know is morally and ethically better social behaviour. But yeah it gets depressing because its so, so, so ingrained and so many people are so casually racist they don't even believe they are.

Bigotry is exhausting. Especially when it’s so casual. In my last job, it was just there. I’d question the use of terms and language to try and shame people. It was just baked in.

While I agree with almost everything you are saying, this bit could have been worded better... there are good and bad people everywhere, try not to group a race, gender or religion as whole. It kinda adds to the problem more than helping.

To the people of color here, please don't think we're all the same.
Never have and I hope I never will.

I mean, not that it was ever true, but the reactions you see from certain fans to black futbol players has always been a sign EU has a serious, serious, underlying racism problem.

And as much as they think they behave differently from racist Americans, both share the same stubborn trait of believing the racist things they say don't actually make them a racist.

Welcome to the party. This has been my entire life. I have immediate family (sister and neice) and some of my closest friends that are black. Shit has always been sickening but it’s just gotten worse lately thanks to President Fuck Face Nazi Pee Pants.

The constant racism amongst many white people is one of the reasons I don’t feel comfortable in suburbs or upscale events with lots of rich white people. If I didn’t live in the city here in America I think I’d have a real problem coping.

I literally can't. Don't know how'd I even react if I started hearing N-words targeted towards me all of a sudden. To me every single person that ever got called nigger, chink, etc. and made it through life with his sanity intact is a goddamn champion.
You either just shake it off or put hands on them.

Honestly, some dude being racist in a 1:1 setting isn't even a bother. It's when it's in public that it becomes a hassle because you feel put on the spot, like you have to do something. Everyone is staring out you, are you gonna just let them stand there and say that shit or you gonna do something?

Some years back, sports brought out the worst in people. Especially the football, an especially the hooligan/ULTRA scene there. Bunch of fucking wankers, the lot of them.

And while big sports events still create focal points for closet racists to out themselves, today due to social media it is much more spread out. They are emboldened, worldwide, and it’s just so fucking sad. Probably it was always like this, secretly, and the dipshits only had their fellow fuckers at the local corner bar as an audience, nowadays everyone is connected online and has a potentially world wide platform. Fuck this shit.

My first football game that I watched in the stadium back when I was eleven years old was Schalke 04 against our local KSC, and there was one black player on the team, every time he had the ball or came near it, BOTH fan blocks startet chants of „Banänchen, Banänchen“ (means about „little banana“ in English and basically implies that the dude was a monkey, because monkeys like bananas). That was also my last football match that I went to in person.

So well, long post, no real point here. Racists fucking suck and are great at co opting sports :(

You just gotten hope that percentage of racist white jerks drops a bit with every generation. My nana who fretted about "the jews" would be pretty surprised to learn her grandson married one.

Come live in the American South. It isn't a fad. It is, literally, a tradition. My experience has been that overt racism is almost assumed of white people by other white people. When no one is around, people say things and assume you are "in the club." And then there are those who don't mind saying things in public. I feel as though, even considering the fact that the South has a reputation for racism, you really can't understand it unless you live here.

Not to say everyone in the South is racist, but a surprising amount are. And you wouldn't necessarily know it. Not just the guy with the confederate flag on his truck. Rather, your land lord. Your car dealer. The Walmart manager. Your waiters and waitresses. I think you really have to live here to get the idea; not near a big city either.

Use it OP.

I listen in on conversations and interject myself into them. ( usually hear them when I'm in line at a store, and its usually a group of 50+ age whitemen)

fucked up part is, being white they think that you are just like them, and think the same way.

I mainly use it for politics, and inform them of shit going on that they are ignorant of, like Mueller isnt a democrat and he's finding hostile actors, next up is the traitors.

you gotta play them on the " christianity is being attacked" card, then flip it on them. you feel persecuted because of your religion? now you know 1/100th of what minorities deal with.

Arrived at the conclusion a couple of years ago. But yeah, I'm more apt to call it out now because it pisses me off. "I'm not racist, but" shit I hear all the time from the people in my life. Nevermind the facebook meme sharing. If you ask them though not a single one will think they are racist or even that racism is even a problem, and yet, they sure do spend a lot of time thinking about people of different races for some reason. Weird.

We don't think you're all the same. We know we have plenty of level headed, compassionate allies. I've met them all my life. It's partly why this current wave of racism took me off guard. I thought this overt idiocy was a thing of the past. I was so naive.

Large driver behind Brexit was people disliking people of different races and/or from different regions. Absolutely pathetic and wish each moron that thought that way could fuck off. Not only has made a numberof my friends feel more uncomfortable just living here but also crippled us and the economy for years to come.

Someplace Far Away
It comes up time and again in my little satellite town (UK). A girl at work last night giggled at the prospective horror of having to go to a 'p**i shop' to get her phone repaired. Several family members have it in for immigrants and particularly, Eastern Europeans. Couple of uncles totally in the barrel for Trump despite an ocean of distance.

I moved away for a while, then came back and having fresh eyes and perspective has made it very rough going. Snapped a couple of times.

The worst feeling is that it never changes in backwoods places like this. Even the Gen Z kids can be utterly shit.

I wouldn't give my phone into a shop like that either, but not because of who they are, just because those businesses are normally low quality.

Shame on whoever uses that term though. Our families have something in common.

I’m not sure that’s exactly it, the thought process is probably more like ‘why aren’t these black people playing for an African team instead?’
Hint: it’s because they’re French?

No, white people have to wake up and realize how much power they have here. The vast majority of white people I know wouldn't even call out casual racism among friends, let alone take an active stance against it.

Their privilege is a huge comfort, and many simply don't want to make their lives less comfy for the sake of a cause.

Just keep fighting for what's right. It's all you can do.
You can only fight what you know exists, though, and a lot of this crap is going on out of public view. I mean, I grew up in a super-white, super-liberal town and had absolutely no idea that cops were just straight-up murdering blacks and had been for decades. No one I knew as a kid would've wanted that or stood for that, but ain't like anyone was telling us about it. Saw some footage of civil rights protests in HS history class but we figured that all ended in the 70s. Then all these smartphone videos came out (Garner, etc.) and we're all WTF??

These days it seems each week I'm hearing about a new way in which the U.S. is crapping on its minorities. I guess I'm "woke" now, if I'm using that term correctly, but that makes me wonder, WTF else is going on out there? It's not so much there's a transgression going on here or there as America is a completely different country if you're not white -- a downright shitty one at that.
