In a blog post published earlier this week, image-sharing site Imgur wrote that it won't display any content from Reddit's NSFW communities on its site.

If you search for, say, r/NSFW on Imgur, you'll hit a landing page that reads: "As of Oct 2019, Imgur will no longer display NSFW Imgur r/subsections associated with Reddit subreddits." They also helpfully link to a couple alternatives that you can use in Imgur's place.

No content, however, has been deleted or moved, and any NSFW images previously uploaded to Reddit and hosted on Imgur are staying at their original URLs. You can also still upload NSFW images to Imgur as long as they're marked "hidden."

The move came because, as Imgur wrote in its post, "over the years, these pages have put Imgur's user growth, mission, and business at risk." That's oddly strong language to use, and it points to Reddit's own problems with moderation.
Imgur's decision to stop hosting Reddit's NSFW content came about, in the company's words, because they wanted "Imgur to be a fun and entertaining place that brings happiness to the Internet for many, many years to come." That emphasis on longevity is a hint: it means they don't see Reddit as necessarily the best way forward.

For Reddit, on the other hand, it's hard to say what impact the move will have. The site introduced native image hosting three years ago, so the effect will likely be cultural. Imgur's move, however, is an indication that Imgur and Reddit might be grown up enough to part ways.

I've always found Imgur's insistence on being its own platform, and not just an image host, kind of baffling. I can't imagine it offers anything of value. What sort of person posts there? It's impossible to know!

Every time I view a reddit post that links to an image hosted on imgur, the comments are literally always the worst garbage I've ever seen. Especially for the fashion subs.

Nobody takes Imgur seriously as a social media platform and those who do are largely the sewer people of the internet who criticize anything they don't personally understand (aka anything neckbeards wouldn't like)

Imagine seeing Tumblr's traffic fall after they updated their TOS and still thinking this was a good idea.

If anyone is interested more in Imgur's origin and how intricately it is tied to Reddit, check out the original post from MrGrim (founder of Imgur) right here.

Yeah it's happening. We've seen this happen to lots of services in recent years. Look at Tumblr. they will gradually ramp up the various walls and censorship so they can monetize more effectively.

IMGUR is an excellent free image host and i'm not sure what else out there is as good, open to suggestions!

Imgur is shitting the bed here. Didn't Tumblr do something like that? Like it or not, NSFW content is extremely popular.

It's important to note that they're simply removing imgur's own community subsections on their own platform that mirrors/categorizes the content posted to NSFW subreddits - not that NSFW content entirely is being banned (which is how Tumblr approached it). It is likely a step in that direction, but they haven't brought the hammer down completely at the moment.

NSFW images being used in public albums within Imgur's platform has been against Imgur's moderation policies for ages, and they're not gonna ban NSFW material from being uploaded outright, they would just prefer any NSFW albums to be 'hidden' (which doesn't stop anyone from linking URLs to said images and albums anywhere else, it's just that they're not visible to everyone on imgur's public galleries).

Again, they're just being more consistent with their existing policies on what they want to publicly show on their own site, hence why they're providing links to alternatives for people who want to few NSFW subreddit material. You guys are making mountains out of molehills.

While I totally get and would like more sites to be more NSFW-friendly, that's still an uphill battle both culturally and commercially. Paypal, for instance, is still very much is prejudiced against NSFW material.

So this move actually helps Reddit since redditors will still be able to host pics on Imgur but won't even need to visit Imgur to view the pics since they can just direct link them?

That's more or less been the case for a while, really. You can upload NSFW images and direct link them, as long as they're kept hidden (which is the case for all images uploaded to Imgur by default). "Hidden" really just means people can only visit the image via direct link rather than publicly through the Imgur site itself.

How does imgur even support itself? I know it has ads and such but am I wrong in assuming most of their traffic is direct images?

Risky move.

Reddit is most likely the top contributor to imgurs growth and the NSFW subreddits play a not insignificant role in that.

Why not just look at porn on pornhub and similar sites anyway? why through reddit?

Not enough self created content on the likes of reddit

Also , ironically enough, reddit doesn't have the stigma or technical issue of a straight off porn site.

Ie pornhun is just for porn , reddit provides variety all in a convenient package

I've taken a look time to time when uploading my own images and the community there is pretty fucking bad. Lots of racist and sexist users there.

That's a bold move, Cotton. I mean, the only reason people put up with imgur is because they're a reasonably reliable image host for internet users. Nobody (that I know at least) cares about its personal social media aspects and other features. Not that their decision is as drastic as Tumblr or anything, but they still gotta avoid irrelevancy somehow.

Reddit has amateur girls who are some combination of "too attractive" for porn, aren't about that lifestyle, or want to maintain their careers or whatever.

Although this is basically what you're looking at 95% of the time:
