What I had assumed were his absurdist, satirical exaggerations of his neurosis, relationships, understanding of the world, were his legitimate, genuine feelings/experiences written down plain.

Comics like Gervais and CK belong in the 80s / early 90s. Instead of making a joke about how fucked up America is with its gun obsession, he goes after kids who survived a horror he'll never be able to comprehend. I used to watch Louis CK a lot because his stand up seemed like satire of creepy males and nut jobs, it felt very ingenious. Then it started to feel like it was all a lot less clever than it sounded and he was basically talking about himself. Which is when I stopped, even if I enjoy his work I can't bring myself to watch any more of him, including his past works that I've enjoyed a lot already.
