In honor of ResetEra™, what other things did you get into on the ground floor?

This whole thing is just happening and I'm choosing to be hopeful that this place is the future as far as being the de facto video-game forum is concerned. With the presumption that this place is gonna take off like a rocket I think we're pretty fortunate to get in on the ground floor. This has the potential to be a sort of "I was there when..." moment.

I wish this community the best of luck. I hope that it can be the best that NeoGAF was without any of the baggage.

And with that in mind, have you ever gotten in on the ground floor of something and how did it work out? I had the chance to get in on the whole bitcoin thing early but I didn't have the money for graphics cards. :[

Pants.

Though, to be serious, I don't think anything really. Especially nowadays. I mean, I always feel slightly jealous of people are let in to these kind of secrets early on, because I always feel like I'm into something the moment it's about to enter the zeitgeist, which probably means I'm already too late.

I've been lucky enough to experience a few Disney and Pixar shorts and film snippets before wide release due to simply being a SCAD alum. I also got the chance to play the Xbone before most of the population as part of some tour Microsoft was doing; played Ryse and Battlefield, flailed around on Kinect Sports, and got my ass beat in Killer Instinct.

The Kindle. Had the first ever version (cost a damn fortune) during a deployment loaded with books. That was ten years ago. Several people on my flight were asking what it was, and were and when I explained I had hundreds of books on it.

Also, Gmail. I had beta codes I was handing out to friends. Locked my name down.

I also got in on the ground floor of a different gaming forum relaunch under similar “suddenly, a new owner appears!” circumstances. Difference is here I was lurking, there I was active.

Yeah Youtube for me (even though is was pretty popular from the get go), 2005/06, had a moderately successful guitar cover channel when there were barely any others. Good times!

World of Warcraft is probably the main one. Followed the game closely before it released and bought it day 1

Dark Souls, I guess? Though I was LTTP with Demon's so I don't know if that even counts. I wouldn't normally mention a game as qualifying, but I think given the unique-at-the-time community aspect, it was a little bit different.

Other than various buildings, was in on the beta test of Xbox Live, Wish I still had my, "I've got great hands" t-shirt.

Steam probably. Got it because of Counter Strike back then but I forgot my password like 10 years ago but I only had CS and Half Life 2 on it so I didn't bother and just made a new one.
I kinda miss the green theme

The ActionTrip forums. Had some good times there.

I seem to remember I was in one of the middle waves of the original WoW beta. Played it pretty much nonstop from that day until midway through Cataclysm when my social life shifted dramatically and I just didn’t have the proper time to devote to the game. Made some great memories there I won’t forget.

When I was four I sat on my Dad's shoulders for a free outdoor concert by Cake before they got big...that's kind of it.

WoW for me as well - at least on the timescale of the EU release. With I guess an extra bonus point in that I actually managed to play it day one, as well, getting my account made before those servers collapsed under the pressure (for, IIRC, most of the first weekend)

I mean I guess the NX/switch is a good one. The first nintendo console I seriously followed hard from the second the codename was announced.
Amazon, Gmail, Facebook. I’m old.
Oh yea these also. Especially facebook, it got big right before my freshman year of hs started, and I remember basically almost no one else had one yet.

I posted every now and then in a Survivor forum called Survivor Sucks, in the 'Clubs that Sucks' subforum (which really was the only half-decent/non-toxic one there). Since it was a small-ish niche community, we could post basically about anything we wanted, and everyone would have their own threads for rankings on show characters, games, and whatever else they liked, and it was super fun. But stuff happened, iirc some people were doxxed, others began to spam and create fake accounts, and the owner decided it was too much 'hassle' to ban the trolls and instead said he was gonna shut down the whole section.

So a splinter board was created and while I personally don't post there as often it just seems to be a better experience all around. I pop back there every now and then when a season of Survivor is airing. It was a much smaller forum though, so it was easier to set things up and get the ball rolling on the new place, but it was nice being there at the new place from the start.

I was a beta tester for Ultima Online in college and was there the day it opened. I say "opened" loosely because it was a string of disconnects with an occasional slideshow mixed in between.

I also somehow stumbled into WoW during beta and played on launch day. It was only marginally better than the UO launch. Both games were an absolute blast during those early years.

I'm considering a management position at a small company that's set to grow exponentially the next few years, so if I accept I would have a big say in the direction they grow and in creating new processes.

It sounds daunting, but seeing this place start off so well is inspiring!

Got a Nintendo DS at launch, but it just wound up using it to play GBA games with that nice backlight for most of it's lifetime.

I started working at a university that was newly established. Like working there before we had any students enrolled there new. The campus itself was not built. It was interesting and an ok experience. Lots of panic moments. But I was better for it given what it has allowed in my career. I'm no longer there, but the school is doing well from what I know.

Tech career support program for women at my university. Almost missed it by a semester. Helped me secure a job before graduating. Really happy that future female students in computer science will have access to it.
