According to a report by AFP News Agency, a controversy was kicked off in South Korea recently at Seoul-based video game company IMC Games. The company reportedly launched a probe into a female employee for supposedly holding "anti-social ideology." The accusation came after Twitter users found the female developer, Sung Hye-jin, followed several feminist groups on Twitter and retweeted a post which had a slang term for sexist men.

Twitter users called on the company to fire her, and called her a "cancer-like creature" that "followed a dirty ideology." It apparently was enough that IMC Games CEO Kim Hak-kyu to address the complaints.

Sung apologized and vowed to unfollow the feminist groups. "I am so sorry that my reckless behavior caused such problems," Sung wrote on Twitter. Kim also announced that Sung will keep her job but he would "remain endlessly vigilant," against similar instances.

One senior manager at an online game studio told AFT, "These gamers relentlessly attack whoever posts anything slightly related to women's rights issues, and label the person a Megalis supporter who should be sacked immediately." She added, "Game sales could go down very quickly if we don't cave in."

This isn't very surprising at all. A popular female idol recently mentioned that she was reading a popular feminist book and it turned a ton of her male fans against her with a number of them burning her photocards/breaking albums and shit. Usually that's only saved for when they actually date somebody!

And yes, that's it. She legit just mentioned she was reading a feminist book.

Many Asian cultures are severely backwards, from sexism to racism. It's horrible here in Hong Kong, and spending time on popular online forums such as HKG can be revolting.

Considering how Asian countries are constantly at the bottom of the list when it comes to gender equality this is not exactly surprising. If this shit happens in west it sure as hell happens there too.

Similar thing happened to an Korean illustrator contracted to draw a character for the mobile game Girls Frontline, where the players petitioned to remove the character from the game, just because she retweeted a tweet from that group.

On the other hand I've read awful things about Megalia but not sure how much of them is truthful since I don't understand Korean

Mainstream korean attitudes do seem more backwards when it comes to issues of sexism and racism. This is disgusting, fuck the management of that company!

Also, those fans talking trash are so fragile...

I love idols (male and female) but I will NEVER understand the obsessive culture that surrounds it where people think they literally own another human being. It's beyond disgusting.

It's possible in fan culture in general, but I think the idol market specifically nurtures this type of behavior because it makes easier to squeeze more money out of fans.

Yeah, most companies definitely market these kids as boy/girlfriends which exacerbates it. I hear it's even worse with Japanese idols but I don't follow them due to how self-contained the industry is.

Pfff.. men are so insecure worldwide. They're so threatened by everything happening in the world. Nope, you deserve nothing more than a woman. We should be treated absolutely equal while embracing our differences. It's simple. Get used to it.

I'm highly skeptical of the whole "different but equal" idea, it's historically been used to oppress. And continually used by oppressors.

Not assuming that's what you meant by this statement. But I just wanted to put that out there.

The apology mentioned in the OP is freaking awful.

I can't comment on an entire nation's culture that I don't understand well, but what kind of environment can it be when you're forced to apologise publicly after being berated on social media.?

On the contrary to that video, I am linking to an article.

https://stanmed.stanford.edu/2017spring/how-mens-and-womens-brains-are-different.html

Stanford said:
In a study of 34 rhesus monkeys, for example, males strongly preferred toys with wheels over plush toys, whereas females found plush toys likable. It would be tough to argue that the monkeys' parents bought them sex-typed toys or that simian society encourages its male offspring to play more with trucks. A much more recent study established that boys and girls 9 to 17 months old — an age when children show few if any signs of recognizing either their own or other children's sex — nonetheless show marked differences in their preference for stereotypically male versus stereotypically female toys.
Everyone is entitled to play with and/or wear whatever they want but males and females do have preferences.

No. But there ARE hormonal differences (for instance) and i'm celebrating the fact that it's great that we are All different.

We should have equal rights and opportunities.

Little kids are even more equal. People should not worry about their baby boy playing with dolls or dressing up. At all.

I thought this whole feminist witch hunt would be over soon since the original incident happened but it only seems to get worse...

You really are not mistaken. Both Ilbe and Megalia (before the site went down) were notorious for being the absolute worst in Korean Internet forums.

The type of culture that values "harmony" above everything else. The apology isn't for what she did, it's more for what she caused: "I am so sorry that my reckless behavior caused such problems". Her action was somehow "disruptive", a lot of people got angry and that's bad. Even if the people getting angry are basically a bunch of idiots.

And what would you say if the same site or article was claiming that black and white brains were behaviorally different?

I am guess you would say it is racist. Because it is.
It doesn't so I'm not going to answer that silly question. The article is from a reputable source. If you don't want to acknowledge the findings, that's your choice but it's no different than what climate change deniers do.

Not surprising considering the world's first alt right happened in S. Korea.

I don't it's a silly question. If such claims about race would be racist, which they are. Such claims about gender are most definitely sexist and male supremacist in nature.
And multiple areas in the male dominated science fields are rife with neurosexism.

lol. Believe what you want but men and women ARE different. The question as to how much is based on culture versus biology is touched upon at the end of the article.
Stanford said:
Trying to assign exact percentages to the relative contributions of "culture" versus "biology" to the behavior of free-living human individuals in a complex social environment is tough at best. Halpern offers a succinct assessment: "The role of culture is not zero. The role of biology is not zero."

Park Geun-hye being a woman leader, you would think things would be the opposite, and misogynists would have been the first to want her impeached.
I mean you see something similar in the US where a lot of people who voted for Obama turned around and voted for Trump. Voting for a woman does not automatically make you not a misogynist.

True. I guess I'm just surprised misogynists would vote for a woman, Conservative or not.

A lot of male supremacists are absolutely against women in leadership roles, period.

To be fair the appeal of Bak Gun Hye was a lot more towards the old timers who wanted fascism back. The internet based alt right that was formed from Ilbe and other forums are the younger people type of nihilistic conservativism.

During my last, regretable argument with a self proclaimed "white nationalist" and "racialist", I heard the exact same thing, for both race and gender.

It went something along the lines of this.
Races ARE biologically different. GET OVER IT.
I'm not about to accept the exact same thing for gender.
