British public opinion is terrible. I used to buy bagged milk when it was in sainsburys, they had these specialised jug thingys that would seal it into a convenient pouring spout it was some top tier product design, I felt like I was in kitchen star trek but I guess having nice things went out of fashion.

Same in Israel. It was all bagged milk when I grew up, then someone brought a milk cartoon and everybody was "yeah, this is better".

Depending on the amount of cream/fat content India has,
Full cream > Toned > Double Toned > Skimmed.
Full cream is usually only used for making sweets. Usually people drink toned or double toned. Skimmed is for people who want to drink white colored water and still be able to call it milk.

That's because a huge portion of milk consumed in India is consumed in rural areas where people believe that the big dairy companies sell you faux-milk and therefore they get their milk from the local dairy farmers who are notorious for adulteration practices. I know lots of people who live in the cities and still insist that the big dairy companies give you bad milk and only the poor, old dairy Farmer will give you pure milk.

Most Indian households have dedicated containers for milk. We usually cut open the bag, pour the milk in the container and store the container in the fridge for the next day or two till it gets consumed.
What do we do with the bags? One word - Landfills.

Seems awfully wasteful. Why not just fill up your reusable jug at the store.

Dunno about other states but Delhi and UP have dairy stores that allow you to fill your milk can/jug at the store through a token system. I don't trust the quality of token milk though.

Not proper bagged milk from Canada, at least.

It's very simple, really: You buy a bag from the grocery or convenience store and it usually has three pouches (or milk bags) inside. You keep two of them in the fridge and put one into a plastic container that holds it upright, and snip a small amount of one of the top corners off so that you can pour it. The container has a handle to help you pour and we also have these handy slicers.

I think it's close to $5 for three bags now. Together, the 3 bags have about 4 litres. More than a gallon in your weird American measurements world.

US Dairy companies have a huge lobby in the milk industry sector. Couple that with their contracts with plastic companies, bam, you have them advocating the use of milk cartons and such because it gives them the market dominance. Then the push of these in media etc, makes the move from plastic containers to plastic bags so much harder for Americans to grasp onto. Just like it took the US a long time to move away from the use of glass to cartons now. It's a nasty industry eh, only way is if the government pushed control over it which is not coming anytime soon.

But yes bagged milk is better for the environment. It uses less plastic compared to the bottles/cartons etc. Generally people pour it into a container anyway

We pay $2.50-$2.95 for 1 gallon or (approximately) 4 liters in a JUG here in the US (where I live...may be more around the country).

It's already been mentioned more than once in this thread. Milk bags are cheaper to produce, can also be recycled and are less wasteful because they use less plastic. They're pretty light and thin, in comparison to those heavy plastic jugs.
