A top Indian minister said strikes targeted a training camp of the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) group in Balakot.

Pakistan said it scrambled fighter planes in response.

Relations between the nuclear-armed neighbours have been strained since a suicide attack earlier this month that killed more than 40 Indian troops.

India accuses Pakistan of allowing militant groups to operate on its territory and says it played a role in the 14 February attack - claims that Pakistan denies.

Tuesday's strikes are the first launched across the line of control - the de facto border that divides India-administered Kashmir from Pakistan-administered Kashmir - since a war between the two countries in 1971.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale told a news conference that the strikes had killed a "large number" of militants, including commanders, and had avoided civilian casualties.

"Credible intel [intelligence] was received that JeM was planning more suicide attacks in India. In the face of imminent danger, a pre-emptive strike became absolutely necessary," he said.

Pakistan's army spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor said the strikes caused no casualties. He tweeted that the Indian jets were forced to make a "hasty withdrawal" and dropped their payload in an open area.

Mod Edit: Added link to BBC article

A couple weeks back their was a terrorist attack in Kashmir killing over 40 Indian soldiers. India believes that the terrorists are hiding in Pakistan. Now this is happening now.

Not sure how common these events are but to my knowledge minor skirmishes/attacks do pop up every now and then. Hopefully this won't grow into something big.

Oh lord.

Is there even another country that has a head of state with enough sway and diplomatic skill to walk them back?

I think Clinton intervened in the 1999 war?

As long as it's a terrorist camp that got hit, that's ok by me. Hope no civilians were around though

Military spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor tweeted: "Indian Air Force violated Line of Control. Pakistan Air Force immediately scrambled. Indian aircrafts gone back. Details to follow."

He added that Indian aircraft "released [a] payload in haste... near Balakot".

Reuters reports a defence official said it had "no information" on the claim.

The Pakistani spokesman said there were no casualties or damage. Balakot is in Pakistani territory.

Thank god both sides have nuclear deterrence to keep this from getting too ugly.

Don't they both have nuclear technology too?

Oh yeah.

Here's a little explanation of the mini-nuclear winter the two for them alone would cause:

Basically the atomsphere would be covered in a layer of smoke like this (let the gif reset):

Fun fact: Litteraly billions outside of those two countries would die from starvation, loss of ozone layer and temperatures.

Back in the late 90s when i was deployed to the gulf, I believe this got really bad. The hate between these two countries is deep, like hundreds of years deep.

It's important to note these air strikes happened four hours ago

Also, don't take this at face value, we'll learn the casualties later and from a not-propaganda source.

Imran Khan was on TV last week and he told India not to pull any stunts like this. Since he is a newly elected PM, I am betting he will retaliate.

Complex issue but religion is at the heart of it. Pakistan is a Muslim centric country and India is predominantly a Hindu country. There has been conflict between the two religions since before the British conquered India. And after India won freedom and split into India and Pakistan...let's just say that there was bloodshed and both countries did not like each other ever since.

nuclear winter theory is largely untested (duh) and based on likely faulty assumptions, especially in the era of air-burst nuclear warheads

Last time it got this close it took a very deft hand from the Clinton Dept of State to quickly broker talks and work out an agreement to walk back from open conflict. Right now that level of diplomacy doesn't exist and we have a hindu-nationalist in charge of India.

For the moment we're just talking about conventional weapons, right?

BARTLET
Toby, how much do you know about India and Pakistan?

TOBY
I know that any war between these two countries that begins with conventional weapons
isn't gonna end that way.

Welp, this is really bad.

Usually the US president acts as a mediator to limit conflict, but he's... yeah...
