Grapple Force Rena is a game that is being developed by Tim Ashley Jenkins but the thing that surprised me the most is that this is being published by the developers of Freedom Planet. From what I can see this is their first time publishing a game from a different dev. From the footage, it is really giving me a Mischief Makers and Umihara Kawase vibe.

Also if you want to try out the game, there is a demo.

*Looking through Humble Bundle Trove*
"The hell is this?"
"Oh the Binding of Isaac guy made a platformer, wonder if it's any good?"
"Steam reviews seem solid."
"Oh, wait, it's THAT guy."
"Super-Meat-Boy-guy, yeah that makes a lot more sense now."

I was sick to death of 2D platformers to the point where I didn't really enjoy Rayman Legends when I played it (I love Origins). Firing up a 2D platformer brought up sour emotions, and I decided to drop the genre from my playing entirely. However long it's been since I made that decision, I guess I've now paid enough penance because The End is Nigh brought me back in to 2D platformers. I've been loving the game.

It took what makes Super Meat Boy fun and adjusted it. The changes make the game a little more accessible than SMB was in my opinion. I may have gotten some things wrong as I haven't played SMB for 6 years.

-The level design is excellent, there are many enjoyable levels. You can tell a veteran developer made this game.

-A problem with many platformers is they are too easy in the beginning for veteran players. Nigh adds a collectible placed in a hard to reach place in every level, which gives me a fun goal in the beginning, easier levels that might otherwise have bored me. I don't think SMB had bandages to collect in every level?

-There's this invisible design decision, that you only start to notice after a while, that was brought back from SMB, and I still love it as much as ever. The hazards and enemies on (almost) every level are timed so that you can dash, from the moment you spawn in, at full speed and solve the level. The levels are timed with rushing headlong through them in mind, which you notice when you try it. You can find a top-speed path that has you weaving through obstacles just in time. This mechanic combines with the instant respawning to greatly reduce frustration from difficulty--not that you won't ever get frustrated ;). Pathfinding at reckless, breakneck speed is just fun and I'm glad the game accounts for that play style.

-The game is easier, and easier for longer, than SMB--or I'm better at platformers than I was 6 years ago? This is mostly because you have more air control in Nigh and wall jumping and sliding were removed, or rather scaled back. Wall jumping and sliding has been replaced with edge grabbing and hooks that protrude from walls. Compared to SMB, this reduces the dexterity requirement of the game somewhat and increases the puzzle-like nature of the levels (this is NOT a puzzle game). Which is a shift I really like. The hooks and ledge grabs sign post valid paths through levels, going against the comparatively more open fluid path finding of SMB, while still maintaining plenty of the dexterity requirement. (Note: the difficulty does ramp up to match SMB's hardest stuff)

-Levels are now interconnected, instead of separate levels. This allows for secret rooms and an overall more cohesive sense of progression. Adding some metroidvania-lite to the mix was a great choice.

The cutscenes did get worse though, and there aren't very many. SMB had better humor and storytelling than Nigh.

This game is as good a place as any if you want to try a "hardcore" platformer. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend it unless you're already pretty good at platformers. And of course, veterans of SMB, 1001 Spikes, I Want to Be the Guy and others will love it.

I'm working on a Puzzle Games thread, in the vein of the RPG and Point-n-Click threads. Some people mentioned interest in a thread like that in the Gorogoa OT and elsewhere, and considering how many puzzle games come out and how big the genre is, I figure a thread like that would be nice

I'm definitely for it. There's a load of fun, small puzzle games on Steam that don't get much attention. Typically during the big Steam sales I always clean up and grab like ten random puzzle games that I have on my large wishlist so having a thread to share more thoughts and ideas on them seems great.

And agreed with those above, great job on this thread, Toma. I'm glad to see you included Iconoclasts!

Fun fact, I actually managed to get a good amount of interesting looking games from the steam release list, which is surprising considering its usually only stuff nobody needs. I think I added around 20 games that werent mentioned in the last thread yet, wo make sure to check out the list everyone, even if you read the last thread closely!

Slightly annoyed that there's nothing like The Witness, Talos Principle or similar on the way, but that's possibly because I just haven't about it. A thread like you suggest would be a good way to draw attention to games like that and the genre in general.

The Witch Trials

In the world of The Witch Trials, hackers called "Witches" can take control of giant government-controlled mechanized robots for their own purposes – and in the game you'll be playing as a hacker that can ally with three different Witch factions. These factions are each led by a Witch, who is looking to either escape a trial they've been put up against, or seeking to help their cause more. Taking inspiration from the Salem witch trials, this game aims to have quite a unique take… but it's also very much set in the same universe as Death Tales. While Death Tales is considered to be the past however, The Witch Trials are set in the future.

Would OP consider split the list to to pc exclusive and then games available for all systems or something like that? I mean, I was scrolling down and saw almost eveything just for PC :/

I am a console player only, like many of us in here.

I am a console player only, like many of us in here.

These threads are mostly focussed on PC Indies, as those are the areas, where you actually find tons of games that desperately need some attention. I also got the impression that for example Indies released on Switch or PSN actually get quite a good amount of headlines in the corresponding platform threads. I am sure some games listed also have a console version lined up, but I havent checked for it. If there are more people in favor of a fully realized PC/console list, we could try to work on that, but then we need someone who is willing to spend 5 hours or so per month scouring the new releases on all console stores and formatting the info properly.

What do others think?

Ah I didnt know that. If there are some threads for indie consoles, I would really appreciate if someone posts a link, I didnt find something like general indie thread aside from best of 2017.

Its not necessarily Indie threads on consoles, but Indie games on consoles get a much larger visibility in the normal PSN/Switch threads. You can probably pop in any of those and ask about any recently released game and will find someone to give you impressions.

But as I said, if others want it as well, and we have someone interested in doing it, sure, we can discuss the details of that.

Finished two games already!

Subsurface Circular can be described as a text adventure with an interface. You "control" a Tek (that's how the robots are called) detective whose jurisdiction is solely inside a train line and solve cases that are assigned by The Management. Though the case you're working on in this game wasn't assigned by your superiors, instead you decide to investigate by yourself the disappearance of other Teks, and as you advance through story the world gets more fleshed out, even though you never leave your train. It's made by Mike Bithell who worked previously on Thomas Was Alone, so if you enjoyed his previous work you may enjoy this one.

In Another Lost Phone: Laura's Story you find yourself in possession of a lost phone, and must discover what happened to it's previous owner. The puzzles are rather simple, you can discover all of them by just paying attention to information you already have access. The game is very short, according to Steam I beat it in about 1.2 hours but the story was well worth it and since I still have two achievements to unlock I may replay it.

Forgot to post about it on the previous thread. Enjoyed both of these games and I highly recommend them botth.

So after Gorogoa, what are other long lost Indie Games that we are still waiting for?

I am still waiting for Storyteller

]where the water taste like wine PC, early 2018

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is a bleak American folk tale about traveling, sharing stories, and surviving manifest destiny.

Been following this title since its announcement. Seems pretty neat.

kuso - $4.99 (PC/MAC)

kuso is the sequel to LOVE, and is a challenging yet fair platformer with a simple aesthetic. You have the ability to run, jump, and leave your own checkpoint.

Another game finished! kuso is the sequel to LOVE, a visually simple and hard platformer with a good soundtrack. Like the previous game it's hard and if you're impatient like me you'll be dying a lot until figure how to beat a level. I don't have much to talk about the game, as I said previously it's simple, you can jump and set manual checkpoints and the hardest part is understanding the patterns and mastering the game.

Even though it's minimalist, the game looks good.

Not as well known in the public consciousness but Radio the Universe is another I've been waiting for that ended its Kickstarter campaign just shy of five years ago with an expected release of March 2014.

I think everyone else already mentioned anything else that's older that I have come to mind but now I'll have to think about this more.

Some of my favorite threads. Thanks so much for putting them together. Makes it easy for me to learn about new games and keep track of ones that have come out.

I think Nine Parchments is out already, btw.

Maybe he'll return to it now that he's presumably winding down on Fidel? Or not.

I'm crossing my fingers for Below finally hitting this year.

The World Beings With You - FREE (PC)

After being asleep for a long time, you wake up in an old prison cell. You turn around, what was that? Soon after, you are free, unexpectedly.
You reach daylight and enter a beautiful, long forgotten and sometimes dangerous world. What awaits you at the end of your journey?

This is really pretty and I wanted to like it, but the fixed camera is just terrible and makes it all but impossible to gauge distance for some of the platforming sections.
