The Cyclone State
https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/19/us/iowa-tornadoes-wxc/index.html

So, this happened this afternoon in Iowa. We got hit with three separate tornadoes in three towns in the matter of an hour.

This is Marshalltown. I work TWO BLOCKS from this. Our sirens went off about 45 minutes before this hit and I ended up leaving about 30 min later (I live in a town (Ames) 30 min away) and missed this by 10 minutes.

Here's my photo on the way out of town:

10 minutes later this happened:

The courthouse steeple gets ripped off.

Earlier, Vermeer Corp in Pella got demolished.

Also, Bondurant got hit hard. Few blocks from my brother's house.

I'm in eastern Iowa and the clouds look threatening, but fortunately radar indicates everything has gone north of us. Lots of friends and connections to Pella, Marshalltown, and surrounding areas like Altoona though, so my heart goes out to them.

Holy shit at the amount of devastation flinging those cars around like toys. I hope no one is killed :(

You could see the clouds rising as we drove east out of Omaha, but no indication of it getting that bad. Glad we decided to do the zoo for a few hours instead of setting out at first light.

That's just incredible to see on radar. Not the storm getting absorbed, but the radar picking up the outflow just before the tornado dropped (you can see the rotation tightening up as the storm passes over Marshalltown, pretty textbook visual signal for a tornado)

Oh man... seeing that .gif makes me think I should go check out the family cemetery. It's a bit southeast of Tama.

I was also driving out of Omaha, around 5:00, and the clouds were so huge and my wife was reading about what was going on as we drove. It was weird to know they were getting hit so hard while seeing the clouds, and have it be so beautiful where we were.
