I'm not saying compromise on issues or water down your message. But don't just IGNORE the shit going on here. It's not just about "winning over" people, either; there's no way to counter the things the GOP have done to rig the system in their favor in these areas without actual representatives. And again, as stated before, Iowa is a swing state.
I don't think me or anyone else is arguing to ignore the state when campaigning. No one is saying that. However, you're talking about "seizing an opportunity" on a story about conservatives and conservative-leaning folks voting for Trump, the very people Democrats cannot reach by design, in the same way Republicans cannot reach, say, black folks by design.

Their declarations of "never voting for him again!" ring hollow when the cards were laid bare during the election. They weren't duped. They weren't swindled (and I'm honestly tired of this narrative because- again- groups who are worse off than conservative whites in most metrics, including education, still have enough basic knowledge and common sense not to vote for Republicans; imagine that shit). They heard what he had to say and agreed with it. And they would be fine with him continuing his reign if the trade wars hadn't started up due to his ridiculous ego. And they will once again bust out the flags and the nationalistic chants when another Republican tyrant comes along that just so happens to not be as batshit crazy as Trump is, because that day is inevitable assuming we haven't all gotten fried by global warming by then.

You don't have to ignore the state. But at the same time, this specific group of people are a lost cause.

Yup. They say this now, but let's revisit this in a year.
I wanna take their word for it, since these tariffs are Trump directly fucking with their livelihoods. Like, no layers of economic obfuscation. They're being shut out of markets because of, essentially, one man. ...But who knows what people think? They could change their minds as soon as business turns around.

Fuck them, I hope they lose everything
Yep. Fuck them, hope these tariffs destroy them.
Damn, folks here just want blood.

Of course they have.

Don't think I'm condoning what they've done. But you also have to seize opportunities like this, not just for the sake of these communities, but also for future generations in these areas and the sheer pragmatism of using them against the opposition in the next election.

I'm from Missouri. I know exactly what you're saying, and I wouldn't have changed if I weren't challenged either. But here's the thing: what a lot of people do in threads like this? Isn't challenging anyone, it's basically patting each other on the shoulder and indulging schadenfreude. You don't have to forgive racism or say that privilege doesn't exist to address the root causes of this stuff. Regardless of inequality, a problem is still a problem, and you address problems. But too many people on the left are too unwilling to write off the south and the midwest, which in addition to refusing to take advantage of people who might be drawn to the left, also ignores the minorities and inequality present in those communities.

You campaign everywhere. You take action everywhere. Hold whatever opinions of these people you want for their past decisions, and always hold them to task if they renege on their claims like this, but the fact that these people are openly expressing dissatisfaction with Trump is both a good thing AND an opportunity that is being ignored. By all means, speak out about the social injustices of middle america, confront people on racism and their choices, but it's also still our responsibility to make inroads in such communities so they can be corrected.

No offense but how many times do these people have to shoot themselves and everyone else in the foot before we actually just write them off? I'm not saying hurt these people on purpose but I'm saying to just ignore people who are so fucking stupid and desperate they're gonna vote for a monstrous buffoon like Trump. How about focusing on folks whose head aren't so far up their own asses we have to drag them kicking and screaming just to the starting line of the race?

Feels like some of you want to squeeze blood from a stone and keep telling everyone else,"No really, this time I'm gonna do it!"

I'll believe it when I see it. But until then... no sympathy. Even if they wake up, no sympathy. oh well. lol
I'm much more sympathetic when it's someone who was more or less tricked into thinking Trump would break the wheel of DC, even if that was extremely far fetched to begin with. People who still believe in Trump for some, no, ANY reason I can't forgive. But I at least understand people who were sick of the status quo, thought they might get something different, then got fucked over like everyone else and regrets their 2016 vote. I'm not saying they aren't stupid or didn't ruin life for everyone, but at least they regret it like a sane person should.

Any Dem Opponent: "They're too socialist/far left for me to support, back to Trump I go".

Literally Ben Shapiro has done this, and he's on the record for hating Trump. We're expecting the rest of these degenerates to wake up, too?

these people will fall in line as soon as they see others suffering more. my guess is that trump does massive immigration sweeps around election time and they will fall over themselves to vote for trump again.

Yeah, that's probably all it will take. If he executes a "blitzkrieg" of arrests and carries colored people off screaming into the night, never to be seen again, with a lot of loving Fox footage of ICE in their new Gestapo uniforms goose-stepping crying colored women and children away who are screaming in foreign languages, people will feel so "patriotic" that his base will be super-energized by so much "freedom and courage." Especially if it there's nightly footage of executions and dead minority children.

What opportunity is there to really seize though?
[snip] We should instead be energizing the bases we already have, and stop sacrificing their grievances to appease whites who will happily fuck minorities over in one or two cycles anyway.
typical white after next democrat stabilizes economy and repairs our standing on the world stage: Hmmmm, you know what? We need to sHakE thInGs uP in WasHinGtoN. I'M VOTING FOR TRUMP 2.0!!!

the year is 2073. the trump voter profiles never stopped, even after the entire trump clan was eliminated in the water wars, even after the great purge.

it is the only remaining form of writing now, varying from eulogies to speculative fiction. our empty cities buried themselves in the hardcopy after the internet was banned.

i sit in my bunker and hunch over a makeshift desk to write. perhaps it is pointless, perhaps i am the last creature on earth who can read what i set to paper. it doesn't matter, i do what i must. the words pour out of me.

"lars vanderhoff, 58, of topeka kansas, owns a small hot tub dealership just east of town. he thinks often of that fateful day in 2016..."

Republicans were hurting these people before Trump. Even brazenly so.

So yeah...I'll believe this shit at the exit polls.
I think these particular people are in a different situation than the average Trump voter. If these dudes are taking $150,000 hits, they probably have a pretty big farm. The government generally props up these big farms with big subsidies. I don't think they fit in the same category with working class people who were hurting from previous Republican policies.

I agree, though. Once they cool down the "R" next to Trumps name may matter more than anything else.

Look. I'm from one of the states where this is the status quo. I'm poor, disabled, and LGBT. And while I've made every effort to vote Democrat, the most energy I've seen directed from the left towards my state is condemnation of it. The whole task is Sisyphean. And I'm not alone - there's a whole host of people who feel abandoned and ignored by progressives because the attitude is that the place we live in is a lost cause. And part of that is because of the attitude that you can't make any inroads here, which is ultimately born from efforts to not even try. You can say "no one is saying not to campaign here, just not to court people who claim to be on the fence because they're a lost cause", but in practice, the reality is extremely different, and the end result is that half measures are taken by the left because they've already admitted defeat.

And then there's the media and popular culture, where rednecks and hicks are treated like the default, erasing the diversity that exists and writing off the victims of poverty and poor education. Because once you've made an effort not to court an entire demographic at all, and that demographic nonetheless contributes significantly to the economic and social wellfare of the community, you've already decided that places like this are getting half of your efforts. That these communities are less of a priority. And in turn you engender apathy from people whose minds are NOT made up yet, because when you don't campaign to these people, you also don't campaign to their children, their neighbors, and the less privileged, and the people who are ideologically aligned with you, but are financially and socially dependent on people who probably aren't.

Red State voters, in polls going back damn near decades, have continually shown to be at odds with Republican policy proposals when it comes to the economy and the social safety net. That has never been the problem.

The problem has been that all Republicans have to do is beat the drum on women/gays/ethnic minorities to get those very same voters to say "fuck it" and willfully vote against their own interests in the pursuit of putting us in our place.

So that farmers in Iowa are hurting...yeah, that sucks. But that doesn't mean they're going to stop voting Republican. This does not mean you aim vitriol and ridicule at red states and the voters who live in them (which, sadly, include the majority of Black Democrats). What this does mean is that you do not waste valuable resources trying to persuade voters who have demonstrated over and over again that they can only be persuaded by the wind, and not by you.

They vote Republican because of the gays and abortion. Fuck them. Fuck Iowa.

And California was once firmly Republican. And its switch to D wasn't gradual.

Things change. Democrats would do good to focus less on past demographics and more on who's under their tent now.

it seems obvious to me but i guess i have to point out that if they can't flip any states that went red in 2016 the democratic party will never regain the presidency ever

it also seems obvious to me that the ones which went blue in the last two presidential elections would be relatively easier to flip

Welp, It's not obvious. And here's why:

It was a surprise to Democrats in 2016 that we lost PA. That the Blue Wall broke. That we lost the Rust Belt. And you know why? Because we were so sure those states were in our camp. That what we needed to do was protect our coalition from an alleged future inevitability, and we were so sure that we ignored those states. And thus we lost them.

To some people, the obvious lesson is that we need to do what we can to win those states back. Which...fair. However, I think the bigger lesson to take from this is to do what you can to speak to the people who would vote for you. Stay true to your message, sell it to everyone, but focus on the voters who are waiting for a reason to line up to vote for you. That isn't necessarily Iowa, which had been trending red before we actually lost it.

I hear what you're saying, and there is a part of me that desperately wants to believe that you're right, but there is the other part of me that draws from my own personal experience where I was told as a kindergartener that if your parents didn't vote Republican they would burn in hell. And I didn't even grow up in the south or Midwest, yet these were the messages I received. I'm not for a moment saying that you don't campaign, or don't make an effort, I just struggle with my own personal experience of knowing how much a persons very sense of personal identity can become wrapped up in voting for the candidate with an R next to their name, regardless of the ramifications to themselves or others, due to a steady campaign of brainwashing and propaganda.

I've seen this happen dozens of times. My aunt is already priming the pump.

"Have you heard what the Dems are proposing? *Lists an amalgamation of all the most extreme positions* Plus I'm sick of all their whining that I may have to vote for Trump, who I hate, because I'm just sick of their whining."

"See what you made me do" is their whole political viewpoint. That way they can acknowledge Trump is shit but still vote for him with a clear conscience "because the other side is even worse". That's what they did with Clinton in 2016, who made it easier for them, but they'll do it to anyone else in a heartbeat, too.

Even the ones who actually believe they'll never vote Trump will change their tune when they mentally turn whoever the Dem candidate is into a demon socialist boogeyman.

Well then if you don't want to focus on the past look at Iowa's 2018 House results.

Iowa's 1st went D+13 and flipped from R to D.
Iowa's 2nd went D+5 and stayed D controlled.
Iowa's 3rd went D+16 and flipped from R to D.
Even Steve King's 4th district went D+19 and Steve King just barely held on by only around 10k votes.

If the 2018 mid-term elections taught us anything it's that writing off places like Iowa in 2020 is a bad idea. I want the RNC to have to waste money in Steve King's district because he's in a competitive race, that's less money they can spend in other races. And it would be even better if he lost.

I'm with you. Trump voters suffering under his shitty policies is the only redeemable part of his presidency.

...until around October or November-ish of next year when they remember they hate minorities more than they the love their own livelihoods.
