I haven't really looked or paid much attention to 4chan in a long time, but with the recent terrorist attack apparantly having a 4chan connection, it seems the time may have finally come for the imageboard to pay its dues.

The board was shut off for 24 hours a day ago, but an hour ago it just got shut down again.

There has been no public announcement or news article confirming what's going on, just a bunch of rumors, but it may be connected to the Sgt 4chan Incel Rebellion post by the terrorist

Let me be the first to say good riddance if this investigation results in the shutdown of the site.

It seems to be working for me? Or is it just replies/new threads that are shut off right now?

Edit: Nevermind, it was working when I made this post but I tried again immediately after and it's down for me too

I haven't been following this too closely, but I'm not super surprised by the killer's connection to that place. Back in the late 90s/early 2000s, the web seemed like such a free, creative place worth protecting. Now I wonder if it's metastasized, or if it was always this bad and I didn't notice.

4Chan is anonymous, and a lot of times when these type of things get shut down the people scatter and the communities grow smaller and sometimes die off. NeoGAF had a bunch of outside communities acting within and outside of the forum via discord and we all had names attached to everything we did. It's a lot easier to rebound with a system like that.

don't think 4chan getting shut down will do much to stop this. they already plan and organize other crap on other chan boards because they know they might get shut down. although in the end something will take over for it and many will migrate there or probably reddit.

i would be amazed and kinda terrified if the government shut it down

4chan used to be a whole lot of novel hilarity that spawned or popularized a lot of humor going to this day (caturday, image macros, etc.) I'd be willing to bet there were a lot of /b/ addicts here from around the time 4chan started...there was nothing quite like it. Buuuuuut the danger of occasional child porn, occasional irl gore, and constant racist shit has always been part of the deal there.

I was honestly surprised back when all of the those internet service providers got rid of hosting neo-Nazi websites that /pol/ somehow managed to completely fly under the radar with that one. I guess considering now though you can only have an entire board of people screeching about wanting to murder black people and Muslims before you catch the governments attention.

Same. I wonder if I simply grew up. Remember the scientology brouhaha? Now it seems like a test run for 2016

while some stuff on 4chan is terrible, more focus needs to be given to the gateway drug type sites. the ones that plant right leaning views disguised as centric/realistic views and then gradually push people towards more and more extreme ideas/places.

most people don't just go straight to the far right. it's a gradual process.

Wait how is a whole site responsible for one person's actions? What's going on here?

Good.

Although the damage is done already. It radicalized A LOT of young minds and that culture has now spread through out the entire internet.

After seeing the way some parts of the Internet are turning into a cesspool of radicalizing people to violence, I'm starting to think that maybe the "Wild West" period really should come to an end, and that it has to be more strictly regulated. I still remember the infancy of the Internet in the 90s, when it was okay for it be anarchy, because all the people on it at the time were just techno-nerds happy with way technology was advancing. But now that the power of anonymity has been recognized and harnessed, with many, many more people flooding in, those anarchic, technotopia days are well and truly behind us. If we don't let the mob rule in the physical world, maybe we should not allow it online either.

I think it was always pretty bad, but the worst elements were cloaked in so much irony that it was hard for most people to take its badness seriously.

I'd be all for it, but you just know the worst of the bunch will simply move to one of the other boards that's somewhat related.

Sad thing is, 4chan isn't even the worst of those kinds of boards.

Seems weird that the government would try and shut down a site that is arguably responsible for the current regime coming to power...

4chans been trash since the rise of Facebook and Twitter and social media

it's been running for far too long and once it does die all the cockroaches will scatter and have to put in more effort to organize

"Tits or GTFO" predates the internet, I'm not sure if it was in that exact phrasing, but the ideas behind it was alive and well and quite common. Misogyny was very prevalent in the IRC/BBS days.

I went to 8ch exactly once, and have no desire to know anything more about it other than to hear that it was nuked and it's operators all thrown in prison.

Makes 4Chan look like angels.
