Think of it, a dumpling is just some sort of mix of things inside a dough that then gets cooked in different ways (vapor, fried, baked, etc)
So empanadas, calzones, ravioli, gyoza, pierogi are all dumplings from different parts of the world.

Sandwiches are defined by bread (1) that has been sliced or split (2) with some form of filling placed between the cut surfaces (3).

Calzones do not satisfy (2), and so are not sandwiches. (It likewise follows that tacos and burritos are not sandwiches, but hot dogs are sandwiches.)
