Is Friends supposed to be a good show?

So my SO is marathoning through this, and every once in a while I catch a glimpse of it. Every fucking time there's some sort of joke in this show, it is the corniest shit ever. The fake AF laugh track playing in the background makes it even more annoying.

Doing some quick googling, this show is pretty well rated and some even consider it one of the best shows ever. Why do I wanna punch the cast so bad? Is Friends actually good and my perceptions on it are wrong?

What do you say era?

I never ‘got it’ in the 90s; people loved it though

I do know that a lot of fans were surprised to find out how poorly the show aged when it released on Netflix recently

It'd be awesome if everyone just copied and pasted their answers from the last few versions of this thread.

I feel like this isn't the first thread we've had about someone disliking friends and I've seen younger people just discovering it for the first time on social media and talking smack. If you're SO is marathoning the show it can't be too bad. Unless he/she enjoys wasting their time.

I've never been into Friends but the last Friends thread we had people were acting like it assassinated their ninja clan leaving them as the sole survivor.......my point is the show gets too much hate. It's okay.

I don't know, I've never truly watched it. Just from snippets/glimpses I've seen through the years it's always come across as so corny and vanilla in its humor and not in a good way, but in a way that's trying to be sincere in its comedy.

Maybe I'm wrong about that (admittedly highly superficial) assessment, but I'm highly skeptical. lol

How often do we need this thread? Two more times? Oh, ok.

Hopefully in 2030 we can talk about My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Even she admits is dumb, time-waster fun, which I get. I'm just confused to know if people legitimately think is a good show.

I never liked it before either, I also only saw snippets. I watched through the series this year (I'm almost done, like halfway through the last season) and...well I've made it through almost 10 seasons, so yeah, I'm enjoying it. It's not deep or anything like that but I think it's entertaining and each character is kinda endearing in their own way.

It's a show you can put on in the background while doing other stuff without needing to really pay attention to.

I say that as someone who enjoyed it.

never really got the show, everyone in it is an asshole, but it's not even like Seinfeld or Always Sunny where the characters being assholes is the joke. they are all just annoying assholes.

I like Friends, but I'm watching Will & Grace for the first time and I think I'm liking it more

If it's not Fresh Prince, Martin, Fraiser, Rosanne, Cheers, That 70s Show, and it aired during the 90s, it wasn't funny.

That includes Friends and Seinfeld.

It's got it's moments.... Mostly in the middle. It got worse as Joey got dumber and dumber.

You include That 70s Show with those classics and leave out Seinfeld? What in the world.

It didn't age well. Kind of tacky humour, a laugh track, a pretty narrow vision of what NYC in the 90s looked like, some characters like Ross are just straight up unlikeable.

I laughed a few times at it. My sister tried to get me into it many years back toward its end and I watched a handful of episodes but could never get into it. Way too formulaic and generic for my tastes.

It's got some questionable jokes and horrible representation. But the vast majority of the time it's hilarious IMO. Lots and lots of classic jokes/gags. They all have fantastic chemistry and play off of each other effortlessly.

Hell, if nothing else, it's worth it for Chandler alone

It's supposed to be a great show, and is. I can watch it over and over again.

Hell, I just finished an episode. The soap opera magazine interview episode.

I think it's one of those shows that are fun time-wasters or something that you keep in the background, but yeah it's highly overrated.

That said, it does have some memorable quotes and characters.

The physical comedy in Friends is underrated. Nobody talks about it but it was good.

I'm pretty sure there is no laugh track and it's always a live audience.

Anyway, I like it. Certainly better than some of the trash that's popular now (Big Bang).

i don't know..if i'm going to compare FRIENDS with How I Met Your Mother, i'll rather watch Friends. At least Friends doesn't take itself seriously.

You're watching it in 2018, so yes, you're not going to view it as favorably as most of those reviewers. I liked it when it aired, same way I liked Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Seinfeld and The Simpsons back then, all safe, network TV shows that would piss people off in today's sociopolitical climate. Haven't had any interest whatsoever in rewatching it, though.

I do like most of HIMYM but for sure.

One thing that Friends isn't compared to that show is preachy. Because fuck, that show can get preachy.

It consistently got better and better. The last two or so seasons are the real standouts once they get more interesting recurring characters and once the main characters themselves become cartoonish.
It shouldn’t work but it does.

How I Met Your Mother had its moments and was pretty good early on. I got sick of it after a while, though. It doesn't hold up as well as Friends, either, but The Liberty Bell episode was great.

Friends is quite a bit better.

Friends
Seinfeld
Frasier
Raymond
Cheers
Full House
Home Improvement
King of Queens
Mad About You

Modern shows that don't get enough credit are The Middle, Last Man Standing and Man With a Plan.
