I am in awe of Hidetaka Miyazaki. He had already cemented himself as one of gaming's greats before the release of Elden Ring.
His resume is staggering, and his work has evolved tremendously over time. Demon's Souls was iconic and sent ripples through the gaming industry. Dark Souls remains one of my top 5 favorite games, further refining Demon's Souls' mechanics and honing it into a diamond.
Bloodborne mixed things up with an incredible setting and combat that rewarded and encouraged aggression. No shields. A blunderbuss. Pure genius.
Dark Souls III was a further refinement to the Souls combat.
Sekiro changed things completely and gave the gaming community the best sword combat ever seen in a game. Absolutely genius.
And now Elden Ring. Elden Ring. What an achievement. It is a game that could only have been made with all the previous games listed above serving as templates for its sheer splendor.
But, like with every new game, Miyazaki and company have further bumped their game by creating one of, if not the best, open worlds ever created in a game.
What's even more remarkable...the turnaround time from the studio. I don't know how they do it. It blows my mind (insert joke about poor performance here).
In all seriousness, I think Miyazaki is the best game creator of all time. Elden Ring has sealed the deal for me. He has eclipsed the other greats in the industry on the sheer impact of his work and how he has evolved his vision over time and graced us with several of the best games ever created.
I'm curious. What are your thoughts and why?
Edit: I'm not saying Miyazaki is the most influential game creator. I understand that influences in any artform are built upon ideas and people and techniques that came before. I'm talking about the best games, most consistent in quality, etc. I understand how important Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, etc are and played them often as a kid. Mario 64 is my favorite Miyamoto-directed game.
And I am aware that games are built by teams and not people.
But directors and their visions are what lead a project, so that's why I'm putting Miyazaki and not From, Miyamoto instead of Nintendo, etc.
Not trying to flame anything. For me, personally, I think Miyazaki is the best. And I love the discussion about legacy, variety, etc. It's interesting.
