Is it just me, or is The Phantom Menace the Better Prequel?

I'm 20. I grew up with the Star Wars prequels rather than the Original Trilogy, and I LOVED them far more than the OT.

I'm older now, and I've developed better taste, but one of the pervasive cultural opinions that I've heard throughout the years is that the prequels are all terrible, but they got progressively better from Phantom to Revenge.

I went through and re-watched them recently, and to me Phantom was the most tolerable of the three. Anakin and Jar Jar were terrible, as common complaints tend to agree, but all in all I felt that Phantom had a better visual aesthetic with less CG-augmented visual sets (If we're ignoring the Battle of Naboo, which doesn't take up a lot of screen time anyways), and less of the terribly whineyness that was pervasive throughout the rest of the Prequel trilogy.

Darth Maul and Sidious, though severely underdeveloped, make for a more aesthetically pleasing antagonist when compared to Grievous or Dooku. Grievous was a bit goofy in Revenge, and Dooku has always been a bit dull to me, though his final scene in Revenge is one of my favorite scenes in the series.

The CG in AoTC and Revenge, as well as Hayden Christensen are what make those two movies such a chore for me to watch. In the days of 480 and 720p TVs, the CG looked alright, but on a modern, 1080p television it looks like most of the scenes were live people plopped into some low resolution 3D environments. It's out of place, like a Halo 5 model plopped into a rendering of the original Halo's second mission. The mediocrity of Hayden kind of speaks for itself.

I dunno, I could just be sick of the prequels by the time I finish the three of them in succession and Phantom just doesn't have a chance to wear on me, but I can't even sit THROUGH Revenge of the Sith any more. I have to get up and make myself some coffee, or play a game on my phone while I'm watching it.

I had the opposite take when rewatching them with my daughter. We watched 4-6, which we all loved (I've seen them probably 10-15 times each). Then we watched 1-3. 1 was the worst for us. Jar Jar was as bad as remembered, Watto and the Trade Federation were worse (and more racist/anti-Semitic than I remembered). The child stuff was annoying. The pod race was too long. The ending is solid, however, with the Duel of the Fates, Maul, and even the palace takeover being all good to decent. The second, while bad, had a few moments that were worthwhile (Jango was cool, Christopher Lee was cool). The third was OK at times and bad at others.

The Phantom Menace remains almost unwatchable because of Jar Jar Binks IMO. I agree about RotS's CGI looking dated but I enjoyed the film, it brought the prequels full-circle to the original trilogy and the interwoven final fight scenes felt high-stakes even though we know who won already. AoTC is just a weird movie. It was not as bad at TPM but the pacing was terrible, really, and the love scenes, Christ on a bicycle the dialogue in those scenes...

Im 41, grew up on the OT and the EU. I 100% agree with you. 1 > 3 > 2. Darth Maul and Liam make it better than the others.

I really don't mind Jar Jar as much as people say I should. He's there, and I don't care about him, but he's really not all that obnoxious.

No.

Revenge of the Sith is not only the best of the PT is the best of the entire Series.

You’re absolutely right

ROTS is the most entertaining with a really creative art direction but it’s got really bad writing

Okay, liking Revenge as the best Prequel is one thing, but considering ANY of those poorly written messes of awkward dialogue to be better than the cinematic CLASSIC that is The Empire Strikes back is absurd.

They're all better than The Last Jedi.

I enjoy Episode III, I think it is the 4th best Star Wars movie if we ignore spin offs. They all have a uniqueness to them, varying levels of good & mediocrity but they feel like Star Wars and mostly tread new ground, developing new worlds, characters & themes.

It's over Era, I have the high ground.

Disagreed, Revenge of the Sith is just so over the top and ridiculous that it kinda makes for a fun watch.

Like I said, I grew up with the prequels. The Ewok line does indeed hold true. For me it Goes Empire at the top, followed by Jedi and then ANH, and then Phantom, Revenge, and Clones. I haven't placed any of the new films yet, but I really only liked like two of them.

It's better than Clones, that's for sure. But Revenge is the better of that trilogy.

The Phantom Edit with the alien voice/subtitled Jar Jar is a big improvement.

For me it does feel the most “Star Wars” of the prequels. At least until all the extended media came out like the Clone Wars show. Those fleshed out the “vibe” to the point where that is what Star Wars is to a lot of people.

You could remove The Phantom Menace from existence and it would basically have zero impact on the story those films are trying to tell.

I don't like any of them but Phantom Menace is by far the most interesting one to me.

I always thought Phantom Menace was the least terrible and the one closest resembling an actual movie. It's still terrible and lacking basic pieces that a movie should have, but it almost hit the mark...In comparison, at least. They drifted further and further away as it went on until Revenge of the Sith was just a series of scenes and setpieces.

Physical sets and the actors actually having fun helps a lot.

Sure, actual stuff happens in Sith but it's a far worse film.

No no no, you can back here and apologising for trying to derail this thread, right now.

Of the prequel trilogy? I probably put it mid, 2 is the worst, easily, nothing is worse than that. I like Revenge of the Sith better because, as full of problems it is, it can be enjoyed in a so bad it's good way at times as well, it also has the more enjoyable cast to be around, it ain't perfect, but it's better than having to deal with Jar Jar and Anakin in the final acts of the film.

Of prequels though? Well since we have 2 new prequels now...

Rogue one >>>>>>>>> Solo >>>> Revenge of the Sith > Phantom Menace >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Attack of the Clones.

(And I don't like Solo that much either).

TPM is a legitimately good movie. Not great, but good.

RotS is all over the place but it's clearly the one that George poured his heart into which is why it's so fun.

Nor Rogue One and much less Solo has shit on ROTS.

Episode I is better than II, which was a bit lost when it was new because Episode I was "the worst; kiddie" and Episode II was "soooo dark; cool". But in retrospect Episode II is the tragedy... the most cringey big budget film of all time.

But I do think Episode III was significant step up from either in terms of achieving actual pathos. You could still see the seams of the awkward prequels throughout, but it was layered with 2/3rds of an actually powerful Star Wars movie. The fall of the Jedi and Anakin achieved sadness. I also felt like much of Episode III's camp was good camp (ie General Grevious is a kind of fun and silly Saturday Morning villain if you can get into that sort of thing... he's like The Shredder).

Its by far the best of the three films, visually and story-wise. Its the only one of the PT where it feels like Lucas gave a damn.

Its still a piece of shit, regardless.

I will say this for Episode I... the people who were working on it were still under the impression that Star Wars was a prestige series, rather than George Lucas' cornball feverdream for kids. I'm not sure if that shows up on screen... because it was the experience of Episode I that defined Lucas' vision as definitively flawed.

Clones is a complete disaster. Phantom is a rather boring, mediocre, and really unnecessary movie. I thought RotS was incredibly forced and ultimately vastly overrated, despite how low many rate it already.

I’m a 1-3-2 prequel guy myself. Like OP I really liked the fact that they at least tried to use real physical sets.

Not to mention shooting with film vs the laughably outdated only 2k cameras for the others that means they can never truly be updated for 4K or higher.

It's just you.

Discounting some botched execution, Sith is the closest thing Star Wars has gotten to a Shakespearean play. Most re-watchable of the prequels by far.

The 3 PT movies aren't good ones. Episode 3 is somewhat acceptable though.

Where Episode 1 shines is it looks the best out of all the 3 of them. That movie had the perfect mix of practical and CGI effects and it was all done on film too. If you watch 1-3 on Blu-Ray you'll notice that Episode 1 has the best picture quality. Just take a look at the backgrounds in the Jedi Council because that set appears in all 3 movies, it's more detailed in Episode 1.

Anyway the story in TPM and in AOC too makes absolute no sense whatsoever which is the biggest problem, not the memes, Jar Jar or the stupid dialogue because all of that could be forgiven if the story was good but it isn't. Nevertheless I like watching TPM and the other 2 movies too because they're pretty well done screensavers and I midly enjoy Obi Wan.

I also think the under water scenes are some of the most interesting in the PT. I also agree with others about the Jar Jar Binks hate, or my personal lack of. Hes not a plus or minus for me. The pod race scene is a tad too long. Less of it and more of Maul would have been great.

I'm sorry, Shakespearean play? That's downright delusional. It's mildly entertaining cinema at its best. It's nowhere near as deep or revolutionary as any of Shakespeare's works were, and it has exactly none of the nuance.

I LOVE Star Wars. Perhaps more so than I will ever enjoy Shakespeare. At a certain point, though, you have to look at what you love objectively.
