I've also been more of a casual fan of Gundam, but I know that this movie is basically the culmination of Amuro and Char's rivalry and it's considered one of the most legendary rivalries in anime. But what makes this movie stand out? What are its high points, its low points, is it worth watching in its entirety?

Small spoiler for the end of the movie:

Char tells Amuro that Lalah was a mother to him.

I liked some parts of the movie, but I would love to see them animate Beltorchika's Children.

This is such a weird reason to claim it ends with a wet fart. Anyway, I really enjoyed it. If you enjoy UC and Amuro and Char (who don't?), I'd definitely watch it. I think it ends their rivalry as best as possible

People loved Quattro in Z and it made a lot of people forget that Char was a monster. I'm not one of those people and CCA is awesome. You should watch it. I think that it's a good ending to their rivalry.

if you like 80s 2d hand drawn mecha porn its pretty great, the plot is kind of meh. and quess pararya is the worst.

It's a very good looking film with great soundtrack. That's the nicest thing I can say about it. Everything else is pretty bad. The derailing of Char's character, terrible pacing, and sweeping everything from Zeta and ZZ under the rug are the lowest points.

The battles and animation are awesome, but like others have said... everything else is pretty meh. As a standalone, it's a decent spectacle, but you'd get more out of it if you've gone through the mainline UC series prior to it (OG, Zeta). And even then, you might still be disappointed of how they handled the characters.

You owe it to yourself to watch it, if only for the animation and to see the conclusion of Amuro and Char's rivalry.

It's a good movie but a few things are only barely explained and they make more sense on repeated viewing.
Whether you have the patience for that is entirely up to you.

Despite its problems, it's definitely worth it. The conclusion to the rivalry is one of my favorites.

Did not like it at all. Like, the animation of Amuro and Char's final fight was GOAT status, and probably the best fight of the UC, but everything leading up to it was shit.

My opinion on this is law.

I both love it and hate it.

There are some really strange things in here, just in terms of coherence and pacing, something feels off. Lots of new characters that dont really go anywhere, and some questionable cameos from obscure returning characters that somehow got priority over much more beloved legacy characters.

Feels more like a sequel to the original tv series while ignoring Zeta and ZZ, but still makes more sense if you watch those. It's a culmination of years of story, while also kind of being a narrow payoff, for only a handful of characters. Idk, its hard to explain, but it's a really important piece of the UC timeline while almost feeling seperate from a lot of it at times.

There are some irritations that I had with the movie the first few times i saw it, but multiple watch throughs really smooths those things out for the most part. Certain characters act in ways that don't really make sense in isolation with what information the movie gives you, so there's some external speculation or conjecture required i feel to really make CCA fit nicely between ZZ and Unicorn.

Ultimately any gripes i have with the movie are washed away by the main event and climax of the film, and the banger credits song that plays. The animation is excellent and looks mighty crisp on the Blu Ray, and its cool to watch 16:9 Gundam for the first time. Its hype as shit, and has some great MS designs. IMO one of the greatest conflicts/battles in Anime, and if Gundam were mainstream, one of the most iconic. (For western audiences I mean, its already iconic in the mother land)

I firmly believe you love it, hate it, or do both at the same time.

Yes and no.

Lots of really good stuff with the battles, animation and music... but the plot is all over the place, the characterisation is not great and the movie gave us the two worst gundam characters ever in Quess and Hathaway.

It is terrible. Quess is reason enough to go and burn every single copy of it.

But my god is it beautiful. breathtakingly so.

As you have said, it is the culmination of that rivalry. You have to watch it.

It's good, I enjoyed it. Watch it for the battles and great animation. The story is so-so.

Should I watch ZZ? I Heard that this movie barely mentions it, almost make it look non canon (like Z movie)

CCA barely mentions Zeta or ZZ. It's is weirdly disconnected from everything else, which is one of its biggest issues. Later stuff (particularly Unicorn) references ZZ a ton.

As for whether you should watch it, the answer is definitely yes. The start of the series is pretty rough, but around episode 18 or so, the show drastically increases in quality. Past that point, ZZ is one of the best Gundam shows. 18 episodes is a pretty long time, but the rest of the show is more than good enough to justify dealing with the early parts.

It's worth watching because of it being a pivotal moment in the UC timeline, but yeah the story itself leaves a lot to be desired, the designs and animation are pretty awesome for the time. Nu Gundam and Sazabi remain some of the coolest suits in the entire franchise.

I'll always have beef with the movie because I never bought how Char went from his Zeta persona to full on genocidal maniac with no real justification.

ZZ is one of those things where I still don't know if I legitimately like, or if Stockholm syndrome just kicked in at the halfway mark.

That said, it's worth the watch for additional information that helps inform CCA, and contributes a decent amount to Unicorn, which is basically a Universal Century Greatest Hits, and is pretty good.

Minus the whole Quess stuff it is a fantastic movie. I would love a Beltorchika's Children anime adaptation so we could see Hi-Nu versus Nightingale.

Oh wait

It's The Last Jedi but for Gundam

I'll also echo these opinions here. I love it and hate it all at the same time. And yeah, it definitely feels like Gundam's The Last Jedi. But it's definitely worth a watch.

After watching it I really got the feel that it was a story that the writers really wanted to spread out into it's own series but had to cram a whole season's worth of everything into a feature length film. It's the same feel I got from F91 as well. I really wish we could've gotten CC and F91 as their own series instead of ZZ and Victory.

I think that it's decent and it sets up for what should be at the very least an OVA with Hathaway's Flash. I don't like how there wasn't a sense of finality with Amuro and Char however. The psychoframe reaction and axis were stupid. Anyway, it's a 6.5 or 7 out of 10. It's held in high regard by those who are heavy into the UC but it's not as good as many of them make it out to be.

It's the end of the Amuro x Char arc, you should watch it if only for that reason.

And the ending theme is splendid

PS : but my gosh are the production values weak for a 88 movie.

Yes It's definitely worth a watch. Some beautiful art and animation. And has some of the best Mobile Suit designs in the entire franchise. Story is eh... though.

I will always always always recommend the English dub of the original 1979 TV show, Mobile Suit Gundam. (Provided you don't speak Japanese.)

The dub is legit good, and the TV show is superior to the edited Movie trilogy in terms of pacing and just overall content. If you must watch the movie trilogy over the TV series, watch it subbed.

The English dub for the TV series is pretty good just in terms of sound quality also, and combined with the recent Blu Ray release, it makes watching a late 70's animated show easier for people that have a tougher time watching things with older, hyper-limited animation budgets/techniques and otherwise crunchy/clippy audio.

Anything to do with Quess and Hathaway is terrible.

Rest ranges from alright to great, specifically the animation.

CCA looks and sounds good, but it's poorly written and makes Char and Amuro look like people with severe development issues...like really severe in Char's case.
One of my favorite tracks from the OST:

Seconded. The animation can be hard to get into, but the story is a surprisingly mature depiction of war, always my first mention when people ask how to get into gundam.

I always offer up War in the Pocket 0080 as well, it's pretty old as well but the animation is lightyears beyond the original show, and like many of the UC OVA's you don't require any knowledge of the series to enjoy it, so it makes a nice entry point.

For the modern entry, it's definitely Gundam Thunderbolt, the movie release is only an hour long but I think it would make for a pretty rad crash course in Gundam, it's got everything we love about the series condensed and portrayed with a wicked style.

It was such a weird departure from Char in Zeta, and fuck, the human evolution nonsense from Char was pretentious as fuck (Zeta was guilty as well).

Mech actions were awesome, so it made up for the plots with that

edit: And it ended with the power of Zeon+Federation friendship of all things.
