To me, it sure seems like we're creeping back to repressive puritanism. Evident in modern pop culture.

WAP was like not even 6 months ago

How many evangelists for Hades go on about how fucking hot the characters all are

How many artists I follow and work with also support themselves by having a Patreon where all they draw is porn

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. There has been a slight push against overt sexualization of women in certain mediums, which is mostly a push against the male gaze and doesn't come from a place of puritanism. There is also a lot more sex in cable shows. Prestige streaming dramas have plenty of sex as well.

Really the only thing that's kind of changed is that there are fewer rated R films these days, but we are a long way from the hyper sexless films of the past. Remember when Movies and TV shows had married couples sleeping in different beds? The Hays code was way more restrictive, and essentially erased queer characters out of media, or at least forced creators to hide them behind implication and stereotypes. Things can always be improved, but I don't think we're backsliding in any major way.

People are thrustry for sexy characters.
Artists draw all kinds of nude shit all over the web.
WAP isn't even a year old.
Anime is still full of "fan service".

Didn't we just have a thread bemoaning how sex obsessed pop culture is nowadays?

Let's not beat around the bush.

"We can't openly harass women, therefore pop culture is sexless now!" while we're surrounded by big titty art installations and tits and ass and humans going insane from sex literally everywhere.
I can understand Facebook and YouTube being puritanical about censoring nipples and whatnot (very ironic in the latter) and I can see where some are coming from when it comes to new attitudes about hypersexualization of women solely for the male gaze (which realistically isn't going anywhere anyway; people are just asking that this not be the literal default portrayal of women in media), but the idea that we're going back to some prudish sex-negative world is a horribly unrealistic viewpoint I've seen several people hold unironically.

There is some sexualized content still, but its fringe and not mainstream.

Mainstream pop culture is completely sexless. Like the MCU. And there are fewer r rated movies.

a lot of R rated type content has moved to premium streaming services.

Also what previous equivalents to the MCU (Star Wars?) weren't sexless?

What are you on about? Pop culture exists beyond children's superhero movies. That being said some of the costumes border on PG.

Like what do you want? Of course sexual stuff is reserved for more adult orientated things but that doesn't mean it's not there. Heck GOT was full on nudity and sex for the mainstream.

Hollywood movies used to have nudity and sex scenes back in the 80s and 90s. Those are almost totally gone now.

lots of movies still have nudity andsex, on top of a lot of that type of content also shifting to prestige television networks/services. Game of Thrones was about as mainstream as it gets during its run and there was an absurd amount of fucking and nudity in that show.

I think you're really overstating things. Yes there are fewer R rated movies, but how many more mature shows are on Cable and streaming services? How many sexual music videos are there? If the only gauge of the culture is what is in movies, then we are still a long long way from puritanism. There has been a mild push back agaisnt reducing female characters into just sex objects, but that is not puritanism. It is treating women like actual characters rather then just tools for titulation.

It feels like you are using a really reductive standard. A lot of the R rated films of the 90s and 2000s didn't have full nudity. A lot of the classic R rated films were more to do with blood and violence then just sex. Game of Thrones was one of the biggest cultural touchstones of the last 10 years and had a huge amount of nudity. Mainstream culture is more then just the MCU.

Also there is a difference between not having graphic sex scenes and puritanism. Puritanism was pretending sex didn't exist. It was mainstream culture pretending married couples slept in the same room in different beads. It was people never kissing, it was the attempt to erase queer characters and stories. Major blockbusters not having a token topless scene is not even in the same ballpark.

Not at all, even family friendly comedy shows like Schitt's Creek or Kim Convenience are filled with sex jokes and have sex scenes, let alone adult comedy or drama like Fleabag or Bridgerton. These are all mainstream shows.
More importantly, it is not heteronormative like it was 20 years ago, so yeah I'm not seeing the puritanism.

Watch more movies and stop using your own lack of reference as indicative of the current state of modern pop culture.

Side note: Sex scenes had a tendency to not add anything meaningful to narratives in 80s/90s movies, existing purely for titillation and the gratuitous nudity was often gross too.
