Pause has been a thing since at least 1999 when I was in highschool. (yikes) Is it making a comeback??

never heard of "pause" being used that way, I think I'm too out of it. I don't even get how to use it in a sentence. "[watching football] Man I love Tom Brady, pause" ?

I'm still catching up with bussin.

Huh, interesting. Never knew about pause.

But then again, exactly zero of my social circles has or would tolerate homophobia, so if it's used in that context, I guess it kinda tracks.

It's essentially going "I don't want to be perceived as gay based on the words I just said".

Which is really sad, because at the height of its use, "no homo" was being used by boys to paper over what were really just healthy displays of affection for their other male friends.

"Hey friend, I know you're upset but I think you're pretty great. B-b-but NO HOMO or nothing! Never mo!"

I think I thought it was just "did you mean it to sound sexual (in general)?"

Yup, I remember once when I was a kid going "leave my man's alone" and my group said something like "ew, that's your man? Didn't even throw no homo in, ew".

And that's just kinda how it went. Hugs were instant "you better say 'no homo' or you're going to get mocked".

"Pause" isn't new at all.

I remember it being around as long as "no homo" if not longer. But I guess it depends on which region you were raised in.

*stares in Black person*

...New??

But also, all that "no homo" and "pause" shit always been lame af to me. The recent pushing of "no Diddy" (even if it made me gut laugh when I first heard it) is so tone deaf to the implications of what that actually means. But also gay still = bad in a lot of peoples' minds/lexicons, so RIP to any improvements there, I guess.

White person discourse runs about a decade behind. Maybe you'll get one or two cutting edge white people but they are considered like a wizard would have been back in the middle ages, feared and respected.

riley as a character in boondocks is such a pure distillation of that toxic hypermasculinity covering up self doubt and insecurity, mcgruder doesn't get enough credit even as boondocks is lauded as a classic

people are still saying pause?

anyhow, i definitely heard it in homophobic contexts, but it was generally more about someone saying something unexpected and maybe a bit wild. it's not as inherently homophobic as no homo lol

It's "no Diddy" now which is far worse contextually speaking

And pause, unlike no homo can be used for generally crazy/absurd statements that make you go "???" (But obviously it's can also be used as a wow you said something homoerotic type thing or innuendoes in general) it has a bit more flexibility

No homo was phased out and Pause died a while ago but the Cam & Mase podcast brought casual homophobia back into the pop culture.

"Pause" is just a game if you say something crazy similar to thats what she said.

never crossed my mind as homophobic.

The whole thing about pause is that it's funny because you wouldn't want people to accidentally think you were referring to sex with men.
Just by that it's pretty obviously homophobic if you think about it for half a second I'd say.

That's what she said works similarly but with the exact opposite connotation. I suppose it fell out of favor because it might offend the sensibilities of any women around. It's also more of a mouthful. Pause. Just kidding, don't pause, I can keep going. That's what she said.

Just curious….what makes no homo homophobic? I've never felt it offensive nor have I ever felt bothered by people saying it. I'm just learning here that it's considered homophobic.

Obviously, it's down to the room it's being said in whether anyone takes offense, but it's considered homophobic because it creates an impression that being seen as saying a gay thing would be so bad that you must pause speaking to let people know you ain't no homo.

literally only heard 'pause' for the first time yesterday

and I took it more as a joke to say something sexual and then backtrack on it ironically

The funny thing about shit like "pause" and "no homo" is that in order for that language to have any traction with you, you have to be thinking about homosexuality and your (perceived) proximity to its cultural markings to an absurd degree.

Straight people think about gay shit more than gay people do. Must be an exhausting way to live.

That's what made the Boondocks episode so brilliant because they drove home how absurd it was

Didn't know it was a thing until now. Will probably be one of those things that now I am aware of it I'll start hearing it everywhere.

I am apparently decades out of the loop. Pause means stop the thing you're doing with a view to resuming it shortly and I have never ever heard it used in any other way.
