never heard of "pause" being used that way, I think I'm too out of it. I don't even get how to use it in a sentence. "[watching football] Man I love Tom Brady, pause" ?

Which is really sad, because at the height of its use, "no homo" was being used by boys to paper over what were really just healthy displays of affection for their other male friends.

Yup, I remember once when I was a kid going "leave my man's alone" and my group said something like "ew, that's your man? Didn't even throw no homo in, ew".
And that's just kinda how it went. Hugs were instant "you better say 'no homo' or you're going to get mocked".

And pause, unlike no homo can be used for generally crazy/absurd statements that make you go "???" (But obviously it's can also be used as a wow you said something homoerotic type thing or innuendoes in general) it has a bit more flexibility

I sincerely apologize. To me, "no homo" has been known as homophobic for 25+ years.
No homo was phased out and Pause died a while ago but the Cam & Mase podcast brought casual homophobia back into the pop culture.
The whole thing about pause is that it's funny because you wouldn't want people to accidentally think you were referring to sex with men.

Obviously, it's down to the room it's being said in whether anyone takes offense, but it's considered homophobic because it creates an impression that being seen as saying a gay thing would be so bad that you must pause speaking to let people know you ain't no homo.
Prefacing something with I'm not gay is completely unnecessary because there is nothing wrong with being gay

Didn't know it was a thing until now. Will probably be one of those things that now I am aware of it I'll start hearing it everywhere.
