I mean, most news, deals, etc. posted are related to the U.S., or if not most, definitely percentage-wise compared to other countries. You barely see stuff from certain pretty big countries like Germany or Spain for example. It's fine, I guess, it's just most of the Internet that is U.S.-based. I don't mind.

A lot of US political issues get their own, highly populated threads (Eg, whenever Trump does something stupid) While a lot of European political issues are only discussed in the country's political OT, if they have one.

"US PoliEra" has had two threads since the site's opening (including the current one). Currently at 336 pages.

"UK PoliticsERA" has had a single thread that is currently at page 38. The difference is pretty stark. (Although the Brexit OT as fared better with 80 pages).

On topic, it does get really irritating when the yanks insist that everyone should look at things through their cultural lens.
but there are so many more "Why do all Americans ____" and "All American [type of food] is bad" threads

can't say those kinds of threads are as irritating as they are hilariously ignorant, but I definitely do not clap for them

In the of equality , this is now a Micronesia centric forum , and the only discussion allowed is one relevant to its interests

seriously though i dont really get what is the point about all the this or that centric hang wringing in this forum . If you wanna make a thread about stuff, just make it, worse case scenario it will draw little interest if its too local or esoteric .

What drives me crazy is that some are pushing the idea that US is the savior of the West, Russia is going to destroy us all, etc.

It's majorly US centric yes. You'll get threads on other issues from other countries but the majority of almost anything is US based.

Considering the overload of super hero and star wars talk, plus trump, yeah.

But there's plenty to go around.

I wouldn't say Star Wars is US only, it's very much a worldwide thing.

Also while I'm here. Seeing some deal in a thread and going into it just to find out it's US only annoys me.

If you're going to post a deal that only applies to one place, please put that Place in the thread title ie "USPSN: (stuff goes here)" or something.

That is all <_<

The US is #3 in internet users...
You're talking about the English speaking side of it, I guess.

Otherwise you are kinda overestimating the US here.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_Internet_users

In terms of sheer number of users, yes, the U.S. behind both China and India. However, 76% of the U.S. population utilizes it, as opposed to China's 53% and India's 29%. Ranking by percentage, the U.S. is nowhere near the top, but no country with a higher percentage has a higher number of users, most likely due to the higher American population overall.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Internet_usage

Some other interesting global statistics, but most relevant are the U.S. being top 10 on the Web Index and 55% of the Internet's content being in English.

As a Canadian, Etcetera feels far more focused on US issues.

I assume us Canadians only care about the gaming deals, since thats probably the most active Canadian thread.

It feels more US centric than GAF did to me (UK here).

The only thing that bugs me is when you see threads like "stunning game is on Sale at Amazon" only to find out it's .com. Wish people would remember its not US only..

Quit complaining you got nothing to talk about Europe/Australia.

We both know you guys love reading about how fucked up the US is. Hence why The Dollop is so popular abroad.

Based on the last bit of stats I saw for the last place, the US made up the largest single chunk, but it was not the majority with all of the others added up. I imagine it's a similar story here.

I mean its English focused and the US population alone is over UK+Germany+France+Canada with an additional 70 million left over.

It uses English to communicate, so it's either a US centric site or an India centric site. Just do the math.

why would you want to add them up? US having the largest chunk means it's the most represented on the board

There are different ways to analyze and discuss data. The US having the largest chunk is one very helpful conclusion we can make. The US being the overall minority is another less helpful but still true conclusion. If you want to see an example of where that particular breakdown matters, check out a thread about date formats or measurement units.

the first one is a fair comparison of US (a country) vs other countries

the second is US vs The Rest of the World, which is still a wonderfully US-centric view of things because it puts the spotlight on it and its own idiosyncrasies

It has surely felt more US centric than the old place in recent years. But I think that stems from there having been a lot of news around their current government, and so that’s also reflected in EtCetera, but I’ve also come across great folks from other continents of the world.

Definitely US-heavy, but with a good mix of other people. Better people, one might say. But one would never say that, of course.

I think the fact that most "international" forum users are used to being in the minority so make sure to specify locality when making threads.

So when Americans post, the assumption that because a high percentage of people will also be American, the need to specify that certain topics are only relevant to their locality, even when the locality is massive is there.

Just look at the threads like a user discovering DTT like it's some magical thing as it's uncommon in the US yet common elsewhere for an example of where US-Centric posters don't realise or consider anyone outside their own country.

Pretty sure this mod team is a lot more diverse than the last mod team as far as walks of life. Even if it wasn't there is a TOS they follow to enforce the rules. It's not like if a mod from Japan would play favorites to Japanese members. They would be expected to show punishment to people equally.
Based on my knowledge, the mod team here is very diverse. But the team at the last place wasn't too bad in that respect, either. It was very often mistaken as being all American white males, for reasons I don't understand since I don't think any of us were particularly private about those things. Then again, I guess if people think I'm a white dude on the internet, I'm safer.

I think it does. As a European I often feel the cultural divide especially when racial issues are constantly brought up.

I'm not saying that over here it's all fine and dandy or that I'm unsympathetic to what happens in the US... I just find myself often realising that we live in very different realities. This always results in me avoiding partaking in the conversation (I just accept that things just go over my head).

Although to be fair, the clash of cultures is also a source of amusement (the toilet water thread, for instance).

I would like to propose a union between all non-US countries whereas through our common association we become the posting majority.

the best discussions about culture over the years have been certain US posters spontaneously coming to the realization/conclusion that whatever you use a bidet on becomes wet and getting confused as to what people would even subsequently do in such a situation
