I think it's more just Sony being realistic about actual interest in the game. It's not going to set the world on fire, and no ad campaign is really going to change that. It just wouldn't be worth the marketing budget to do anything more than a small campaign when it's really just going to sell to the pretty small subset of people nostalgic for the first one.

...for a MediEvil remake.

As Niche as Spider-Man is, MediEvil is perhaps even more niche.

Yea......

Medievil is just not a big franchise, i believe the Sequel on PS1 sold way less than the first. ANd PSP release did like under a million. ANd they are even pricing it as a budget title at $29.99.

Thats why you don't see billboards for it. The fact we are getting it and it actually looks good/faithful to the original is awesome. I mean medievil is not super popular even in PS1 days.

Didn't the original on PS1 only sell like a million units?

This is as niche as it gets and it's literally being made for people who were fans of the original and anything else is a bonus.

It'll probably get a social media push and, if it's any good, it'll do well by word of mouth.

Don't expect big numbers. Sir Dan isn't Crash or Spyro.

I always considered MediEvil to be part of the second tier Sony first party games back then. So with the likes of PaRappa and Ape Escape.

Like, it was always one of the games that was synonymous with the system in the UK, along with Crash, Spyro, MGS, Tomb Raider, Oddworld, Legacy of Kain, Gran Turismo, and the aforementioned games.

I can see the added incentive business case with MediEvil for Sony: What's smart about producing a PS4 remake of MediEvil is that it helps round out some more of the PS1's legacy.

In general, Sony has needed to work better are cementing the nostalgia factor with the original PlayStation. This generation they've made some good moves. A lot of those moves are basically complimenting third party efforts (Crash, Spyro, Resident Evil 2), and they've all helped round out a PS1-legacy wave this generation.

I literally have an entire folder on my PS4 dash called "PS1," and it includes the Crash Bandicoot Trilogy, Spyro Trilogy, Resident Evil 2, REmake, PaRappa the Rapper, Oddworld: New and Tastey, and soon MediEvil.

I mean, it's not really the kind of game they're going to advertise a whole lot. People who played it back in the day will play it but otherwise I don't know how much appeal it has.
It's really a strange market, why are people buying games they already played to replay them? I don't get it, I only play games I never played before, which is why I'm mildly interested in this remaster / remake (?) btw

It was an AAA game. It's more of a fan service game and its releasing Halloween. It will sell well but not amazing. Was never meant to.

What's the point of marketing it? The casual audience won't care. The core, reviews and word of mouth is all it needs.

If a game doesn't get a 20 million dollar marketing campaign = being sent to die?

To be honest we only ever see extreme marketing for their AAA megablockbuster games

Plus this is a remake of an old niche game

I'm still completely baffled by the decision making that led to this getting a full blown remake in the first place.

There are quite a few other, more popular or recognizable Sony owned franchises that make way more sense for revivals; maybe there's just a really big MediEvil fan at Sony corporate?

Medievil is on par with Crash and Spyro, both of which did really well. But Sony is not marketing Medievil nearly as much as these other two games. If Sony put a little money behind it, it should at least do as well as Spyro.

Sony has a thing for supporting mid tier games but then suck at marketing them. Has been happening since Puppeteer, Twisted Metal PS3 etc.

As we've seen with crash and spyro, the game is exclusively made just to revive a ps1 classic. They have no intention of reviving the IP.

Despite spyro and crash being so successful, no one has made any word on a new game yet outside of the remasters.

I'm okay with not getting sequels at this point. I'm actually enjoying fresh IPs

Just last week i think there was an earnings call or something where Activision commented on the success of the remasters and made a comment about "Original content" coming for those properties. They also said something to the effect of "Look for more new remasters coming soon".

I'll see if i can find the link.....

EDIT- Here you go:

If Sony has any extra space in it's holiday marketing budget, it should go to concrete genie, not this shit.

If there is a small marketing campaign wouldn't that kick in sometime in late September? It's still too early

Plus Concrete Genie comes out first.

It's being made for fans of the original and nostalgic PlayStation players. They'll ramp up the promotion and tie it into Halloween which is smart. There are only so many resources available for marketing, and just because they're not pouring millions and millions into MediEvil doesn't mean it's being "sent to die", it just means they're aware of where it fits into their overall catalogue.

People seriously over estimate the strength of Sony's first party ip from the ps1 days. Outside of Crash and Spyro, I'm not sure they have anything the masses care about from those days.

Honestly? I feel this remake is made purely for the fans of the original who wanted it to be the same game but better graphics.
That's it. I highly doubt they are even considering it to be anything more than that. Spyro or Crash revival, this is not.

Exactly. This game was never going to do big numbers no matter what. Only the hardcore fans even remember it, I worked in game retail back during the PSX launch and era and it was never even near the same level as Crash, Spyro, or many other games. I would expect Knack II numbers, maybe slightly better.

I feel like while expectations should be tempered for this, a lot of you are selling short the fact that all three of the games prior to this one crossed over a million units sold and in the 1990s and early 2000s that figure went even further than it does now. It wasn't a megahit moving 5 million units like a Crash game, but it did not flop by any means and definitely was not obscure.

Idk it's $30. Ratchet did great at $40.

It's near Halloween which is a good time to market. Idk what else they could do.

The 1-2 punch of Medievil and Concrete Genie for $30 each in October is amazing imo

I think Sony knows that niche market for platformers of the past won't be big sellers. Those who know when MediEvil is coming out would purchase the game anyway. Sony's marketing resources is probably consolidated for Death Stranding as that's the big AAA exclusive to worry about from a financial standpoint. MediEvil would do what it needs to. Appease to the crowd nostalgic for the original games. Best case scenario, Sony starts to put out some YouTube advertisements or webpage ad posters. Nothing extravagant, but enough to maybe engage outsiders. Ultimately, MediEvil is something for the fans and not much for the overall audience.

I'm just happy it's being made and that Sony is still committed to smaller projects like this and Concrete Genie.

I dunno. Those are the three games I think of together when I think of PS1 platforming franchises. Maybe ape escape too. All decent platformers with unique settings /characters.

You can most certainly associate these names with Playstation but I wouldn't put MediEvil in the same league. Spyro and Crash were huge on PS1.

OK, so one thing no-one is really discussing here is an estimate on the average CPS (cost-per-sale) Sony are targeting for this game.

This is a mid-price title, so that number will be lower - which is one reason you've seen more below-the-line stuff (ie. PR) than any paid-for marketing advertising or other marketing like POS displays.

As a mid-price, seasonal release (i.e. Halloween) you won't see any significant spending on above-the-line marketing until early October, and even then I would imagine the bulk of that spend will be going into online and the cheaper end of old media - so bus sides, billboards and cinema, rather than TV. POS materials will probably be there for specialist stores and select locations at big multiples (e.g. Walmart, Tesco, Carrefour etc.) that have large dedicated gaming areas, rather than a small amount of shelf-space or single-title POS racks like they have for CoD games.

PS - they should've remade Pandemonium
