I'm making some lifestyle changes and have cut out soda entirely, sticking with sparkling water, unsweetened tea, and water from now on. I really, really miss soda, though. I was a coke drinker for life. Is there any diet soda out there that doesn't have the godawful tongue-covering aftertaste? Looking for recommendations from anyone about their favorites. I'm also open to sparkling water with essence in it (a la Bubly and those) so give me any suggestions you have!

You just gotta try them to find what you like. I like diet mountain dew, coke zero and Pepsi max.

Sparkling water is good - as far as diet pop goes the only kinds I can drink are Coke Zero, Pepsi Max, Diet Dr. Pepper and (odd or not) Fresca.

I find the Coke Zero and Sprite Zero to be the best, my wife says they both leave a sweet aftertaste but I dont notice it.

Yeah, Coke Zero (and recently discovered Sprite Zero) are the best. Especially from a Coke Freestyle machine.

No, not really. Even Coke and Sprite Zero have a bit of an aftertaste. And Coke Zero dries out my mouth for some reason.

Diet Soda is just full of garbage, it's really not making a lifestyle change. Drink sparkling water if you need that carbonated sensation.

The only one I've found that doesn't have any after taste is Diet Pibb but that shit's way harder to find than Diet Dr. Pepper for some reason.

I also had diet orange Fanta or maybe it was Crush or Sunkist recently which was pretty good. I should try Pepsi Max again too.

Give it a few weeks without soda. You'll actually find diet soda okay after not drinking the super sugary original in some time. I had a Diet Mt Dew like a month after I started my own personal soda cut and it tasted just like the original for me.

Diet Soda still isn't great. Nor sparkling water (especially the kind with the artificial flavoring). You're better off with just water imo.

Polar makes the best seltzers out there, so give it a try.

For super low but not zero calorie, Spindrift makes seltzer with a little actual fruit juice in it. it's like 2-10 calories per can or something, and is pretty good.

I have tried everyone I can get my hands on, even done blind taste test, and sadly no diet soda made yet seems to be able to come close to real soda taste, though the after taste has been diminished a lot with Coke Zero.

But yeah, no luck, Sugar is just a bitch of a chemical to reproduce without side effects (and sugar itself has enough horrible side effects)

Diet Mt Dew is the one I'd recommend. Having it be the only thing available to me for a while was what got me to switch to diet because the syrupy/sugary thickness of non-diet was too much for me after drinking Diet Dew for a while. I think it's probably the easiest one to acclimate to. Cherry or Vanilla Coke Zero (or Cherry Pepsi Max) are good options as well. The worst would be Diet Coke; I feel like it has a powdery, almost-chalky taste that I assume is from the artificial sweetener in it? I mean, I'd rather drink Diet Coke over water or carbonated water, but it's still pretty terrible.

EDIT: Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper is another good choice. I think it tastes closer to its non-diet cousin than actual Diet Dr Pepper does. Oh, and Best Choice Diet Cream Soda is one without much of an aftertaste. The drink is really watery. It's one of my favorites, I guess.

Diet Dr. Pepper followed closely by Coke Zero, but they both have an aftertaste.

Water really is the best though.

I believe the aftertaste is caused by aspertame, which AFAIK is in all diet sodas. I can't stand the stuff, if I get anything it's sparkling water.

I gave up on an actual name brand "diet soda" being even slightly tolerable a long time ago. They all have a nasty after-taste to me.

I'm all about carbonated water now (which I add juices to).

As others have said Coke Zero (Tastes identical to regular coke in my opinion), Sprite Zero, as well as Diet Mountain Dew as are delicious.

But my absolutely favorite in terms of flavor is Fresca:

I mostly drink Coke Zero and Fresca when I have soda but don't believe people that say Coke Zero taste pretty much like regular coke. It does not at all. As for after taste.. you stop noticing it after awhile really. I used to hate it but when I stayed with my cousin when I was younger, he'd have a ton of diet soda in the house and I used to drink it when I didn't want water then I got used to it and it stopped bothering me.

Dr Pepper 10 - has 10 calories of the real stuff in it, tastes really close to a full sugar soda at a fraction of the calories, but can be hard to find. i think drinking it made the eventual transition into less soda overall easier.

Diet A&W Root Beer

Diet Cherry 7up

Looking for local stuff can be good. An acquaintance of mine out on the east coast drinks diet birch beer all the time.

For the whole world I'd say Coke Zero, they have done such a good job to make it as close as the original. But the king is truely Trocadero Zero, the taste is exactly the same which baffles me. Sadly it's only sold in the nordic countries I think.

I think diet soda is an acquired taste. I hated them at first. Now I think most of them taste pretty good and now only indulge in a regular soda at parties

Diet Dr. Pepper (including the cherry variation) is probably the best one in terms of that. It just tastes like regular Dr. Pepper to me.

Coke Zero is King. But I buy a bunch of diet soda to have options. Diet root beer, diet cream, diet lemon, etc etc.
