I remember having one of these back in like 2012 and it was an interesting site. You would sign up and automatically find lots of people following you that weren't bots. The content felt varied and you could curate it yourself. I was an edgy undergrad so I had a lot of art, porn and dark stuff on mine. I remember the site also had a decent mix of both guys and girls. It felt like a somewhat private experience and like you were being matched with people you would want to meet irl. I even met a girl that was attending a college one state over from mine once in 2013. It was a weird site but I spent a lot of time on it and it did teach me some good things. I think there were more things wrong with the site though.

I've tried using it as recently as 2016 and it's awful. It's big, bloated and there are a ton of bots. Doesn't seem like anyone even uses this site anymore and it's just a bunch of bots and big spam blogs reblogging each other.

Is tumblr dead?

Black tumblr is alive and thriving, but I don't really mess with other communities as much. Quarterly blackouts have really kept the community alive.

Nah, it still lives. Even after Yahoo bought it.

Tons of artists use it to share their stuff, and it's pretty entertaining too depending on who you follow.

what other communities are there? Seems like the liberal arts student community and tattoo hipster community all died along with a lot of the art communities.

I use it as a journaling service and keep all posts as private. It's pretty easily accessible on a lot of platforms and I like the customizability it has in themes.

My dashboard is still pretty active but I do agree with the bot issue. I wish something would be done about them, but Tumblr does not really have an incentive to get rid of them.

I used tumblr for sharing and looking at others art a lot. Found good friends/artists through it, but Instagram has almost completely replaced it for me. It's just easier and more focused.

I used it earlier for self-stimulation so the porn is still active and thriving. The porn community is very healthy on tumblr and seems to have gotten bigger with more exclusives with Twitter cracking down on porn.

I rarely use it whereas I used to visit it often. The search function blows, and they're in a dire need of a new layout. I also hate how they throw shit into my feed from people I don't follow.

I know gay tumblr is still boogying, but that's about it. Seems like most of the bigger/art/lit leaning communities have all moved on to Instagram or something else. It stinks. I used to get some pretty good book suggestions.

For me it kinda died. I felt it's easier too manage all the content I used on Tumblr on Reddit. Only thing that Tumblr is still really good for is fan fiction and amateur porn videos.

Still alive. I occasionally open it for art purposes.

Instagram is better for more casual sharing like sketches and wips, but it blows for large paintings, a lot of the more vertical ones not being supported there.

Much of the art community migrated entirely over to Instagram, which took a massive blow to the site considering how much of it was geared towards visual arts, and all that's really left are some of the people who used Tumblr as a simple blogging platform, which wasn't a particularly large community to begin with.

Without the top 1% of users creating content for the 99%, website communities die pretty quickly (as I think we've seen with this site's predecessor.)

Not at all.

Well, there is lots of adult content from artists.

It's been in decline for years, though there are still individual communities that thrive here and there.

Is there still a large feminist community on there? I remember when I was using it regularly a few years back to promote my website, most of my followers were feminist women.

What? No. I've been using mine since 2011 and my dashboard is still as active as ever. It probably is past its prime though, but it hasn't reached "dead/ it's dying" levels yet.

No?

I don't know their financial situation, but they're still pretty relevant and it's a great tool for artists.

I've always preferred it to Twitter, because you can actually find some worthwhile content there instead of half-formed sarcastic quips. But I've never really found a community I liked. Seems like it never really reached its potential.

I mean, i understand getting disconnected from it, but, come on, people can't possibly think tumblr fell out of use.

Sadly, most people still choose to do that "half formed sarcastic quips" as their main thing regardless.

Didn't they kill the porn?

They're actively trying with things like:

-If you're flagged as NSFW, you don't appear in searches
-If you willingly flagged yourself NSFW, you cannot unflag your blog even if you go clean
-Tumblr might flag you NSFW for no reason
-If the algorythm for some reason decided you're NSFW, your icon turns into a pixelated mess when showing up to others and there is no way to turn this off (or at least i havent found it)
-Report system is broken

I used to go there often but the data cap in my connection prevents me from browsing further since tumblr eats up a lot of data.

Nah. Its also gonna depend on who you follow. I follow some artists repost their stuff when I like it. That way i have a place to go and look at pretty pictures when im down. I think its great but cant compare it to early tumblr since I've only been active for the past two years or so.

I feel like Tumblr is probably one of the most influential sites of the 2010's with how many terms and concepts it introduced to public lexicon. Sad to see it decline tbh.

A lot of the people I followed have moved on, so it's kinda dead for me. If I was more active in finding new blogs to follow my feed would be a lot more lively.

The porn police has killed some of my favored artists' pages, and patreon might also do that, too, because their wording is vague enough that it could be read "Literally any all all porn, if you sell access to it" is a bannable thing. Some artists are still there, too, though.

even if it was just used primarily as a porn resource it's still better than the dumpster fire that is twitter imo

I use to look at art and whatever fandom I'm interested in. Loads of great art and loads of porn.
