New Delhi (CNN) — An American Christian missionary is thought to have been killed by tribespeople from one of the world's most isolated communities on a remote island hundreds of miles off the coast of India, according to officials.
The 27-year-old American, identified as John Allen Chau, came to India on a tourist visa but came to the Andaman and Nicobar islands in October with the express purpose of proselytizing, Dependra Pathak, Director General of Police of the Andaman and Nicobar islands, told CNN.
"We refuse to call him a tourist. Yes, he came on a tourist visa but he came with a specific purpose to preach on a prohibited island," Pathak said.

I think this was irresponsible of the American missionary.
He could function like a time bomb, eradicating the people at the island by giving them new diseases.
Trash my canoe, if old.

Wildly disrespectful of the people, the law, etc. This is someone who was literally asking for trouble and he got it.

Side question, is there enough genetic diversity to host a tiny island like that? Seems like a lot of pornhub would happen there

The boat stopped 500-700 meters (1,640 - 2,300 ft) away from the island and (the American missionary) used a canoe to reach the shore of the island.

He came back later that day with arrow injuries.

On the 16th, the (tribespeople) broke his canoe. "So he came back to the boat swimming. He did not come back on the 17th; the fishermen later saw the tribespeople dragging his body around.

They shot him full of holes, broke his damn canoe and he still swam back.

I mean, points for enthusiasm, I guess, but sometimes life's kinda nudging you to just take the L, ya know?

Well, they had no business being there. Especially to spread religious beliefs to people who likely have survived just fine how they've been living.

This reminds me of a Ted Talk, missionary went to some tribe to teach them about Jesus. They asked if he ever met him. He said no. They asked if his brother/parents met him. Again, he says no. They were confused on why hes talking about someone he hasn't met, that existed a long time ago, and hasn't been back since, and why do they have to abide by those teachings.

He became a atheist shortly after returning home.

The craziest part of this story is that he went back three times, each time it got worse and worse. Why did he keep going back?

The unwashed must hear the word of his LORD jesus christ! Else they can't go to heaven, because the bible was tragically mistranslated, and maliciously edited from all of the older source material. So these poor fucks in the cult think they MUST do this as their job/duty. They've been groomed into it.

I think they must mix, because if they didn't they'd all be deformed due to lack of gene diversity. Most islanders are ripped and healthy from the documentaries I've seen. The royal family inbred themselves into disease after a few 100 years. These islanders have been at it for a while.

good topic to google though, i want to know now.

Maybe there's a reason the Indian government says nobody can go there.

Edit; Also if this guy wanted to preach, there's plenty of Hindus and Sikhs in India to convert. This guy almost certainly just wanted the prestige and pride of doing something nobody else could. His hubris and desire to be special got him killed.

LMAO. seriously. People blindly follow traditions(religion as one of them) and don't even question the absurdity of it all. I'll get religious if Jesus returns lol.

And how exactly was he planning on communicating with them? Talking really loudly and slowly and moving his hands a lot (maybe with some exaggerated facial expressions)?

I am fascinated that he kept going back even after suffering from arrow injuries.

That sure is...dedication...?

I'm obviously not cheering for that, but I can't say I'm feeling particularly sorry for the guy either. He knew what he was getting into and chose to go again and again.

I have a hard time not seeing missionaries as vectors of religious colonialism tbh.

The Sentinelese have made it clear over a long period of time they wish to be left alone. The Indian government agrees and has set up an exclusion zone. Why can't people just respect their wishes?

I know this place. It's infamous, they even attack helicopters lol.

They do seem kind of shitty though. They attack on site, absolutely indiscriminately, Indians, sailors, everyone and everything. If say an Indian Navy vessel beached in a storm and they attacked it and were promptly shot to death, nothing of value would be lost.

Can you imagine this behavior anywhere else? 'Sets foot in Norway' 'Gets an arrow to the throat and dragged around the streets'.

But yeah, leave em alone for sure. They don't seem interested in leaving, or otherwise incapable of doing so. So no harm as long as you stay away.

Well, that was stupid, why did he become an atheist after that? Just because he heard the argument "if you didn't see him or your parents then why you believe in him dumbass", christians probably hear this argument 10 times a year by atheist friends.

Reminds of that episode of Vikings where that Christian monk goes to them. He offers to hold a hot iron rod as proof of his faith. He imagines that Jesus will protect him and that all the vikings will be awed and convert right then and there.

Instead, he burns the skin off his hands and they all laugh at him while he screams in agony.

Methinks you underestimate just how sheltered a lot of Christians actually are. Hint, most of them are not on ResetERA.

Probably thought he was doing the "right" thing and this is the challenge he had to overcome. Clearly deranged from his religious beliefs and suffered the ultimate price for his hubris.

I can't believe Christian Colonialists are still trying to convert Native populations. Have the last 500 years taught them nothing?

Yep, I had the same reaction when i learnt this was a still a thing a few years ago. Most infuriating part was to hear about the tactics used to "convert": the missionaries were apparently giving away modern medicine to remote villagers, telling it was a gift from God or something along those lines. This specific example was taking place somewhere near the Thai-Laos border, and tactic was said to be quite wide spread still across SEA.

These are people, with their own lives and relations. Is that of no value?
He just wanted to spread the word of Jesus and diseases
Good point.

He should have gotten the hint the first time and just left. The last thing those people want or need is your bullshit beliefs. Plus the exposure to germs/viruses from this dude, definitely didn't need that. Going to have to say this one is on the missionary sadly.

If if were the US Border Patrol, Nazis, the French, absolutely anyone who would simply murder strangers for simply 'being there' I'd feel exactly the same. Fuck em. Preferably leave them the hell alone, but I'm not going to say mourn them. No value in my eyes.
