It's almost been a year since the EGS exclusivity deal, but there is still no word on a potential Steam release? Do you think Ubisoft will release it on Steam, or are they done?

I believe Ubisoft just made the decision to stop releasing their games on Steam didn't they? I don't think it's a typical one year deal with EGS. They just sell on the Ubisoft Store and on the Epic Game Store now.

Just get ubisoft games through uplay, ubisoft's games on steam still install/ start up uplay anyways so it's not like there's much difference.

We will see next month. They did the Metro Exodus thing with Anno (Steam version exists for pre-orderers), so that one could still come out.

Why pay 30% to Steam when they can take 100% from Uplay.

Why would Microsoft, Bethesda, EA, Activision and CDPR release their games on Steam when they can get 100% from their own launchers? This have been discussed numerous of times. Recently in a thread regarding Metro Exodus selling 200,000 copies within days on Steam, one year after Epic's and Gamepass exclusivity deals.

You're probably gonna have to wait until the next expansion or Division III before you get a clear answer.

Because Ubisoft has uplay which they like to use for their in game integration, online functionality, payments, and mtx as an all in one solution. And steam sort of interferes with it. A steam copy of an Ubi game isn't just a shortcut to the game on uplay unlike EGS copy.

More importantly, Ubi makes most of their money via mtx. Steam changes a flat 20% (since Ubi makes over $50 mil in revenue) for mtx as well on Ubisoft games, whereas the EGS version is basically a shortcut to add the game to uplay after which you don't even need the EGS launcher and all the mtx is processed on uplay's end. You can't do this in steam ver as the steam ver of a uplay game doesn't allow them to process the transaction on uplay and doing it via steam payment is the only option there.

Also I think ubisoft is doing well with uplay currently. Last year I read some reports that PC edged out the PS4 revenue thanks to Anno 1800 and uplay for Ubisoft.

Honestly, the most inconvenient part about the EGS partnership means not being able to use Greenmangaming.

This. But I guess people want Steam Trading Cards, Achievements and that kind of stuff, too.

Not really an issue because EGS has/had some amazing deals going for Ubigames. Got the Anno 1800 Gold Edition for 30€ through Christmas and The Divisin 2 for 5€. And I still got a 10€ store card from these two deals that I can redeem until May 2020.

Ubisoft usually don't include achievements on Steam. A few games do.

They're probably trying to get as many people onboard as possible to their own service before opening up Steam purchases.

they don't really need to. if anyone was wanting to play it they'd have just got it from uPlay. i don't see the point in waiting for the Steam version.

Just as aside, has anyone ever contacted Uplay support in order to merge two different accounts? Be interested to hear how it went.

So what I'm reading here is that by buying from uPlay we are facilitating the transition of regular games to GaaS. Neat, good to know.

Even if launches on Steam the game's online will always be thorough uPlay. All you're doing is adding another launcher to the mix and in return getting the game to show up in your Steam library.

"Why sell my brand of orange juice at Wallmart and pay them a cut when I can sell it on my own corner shops and keep all the money?"

Dunno, it may have something to do with the fact that selling multiple times as much just makes it worth.

Anyway, back to the topic, I'm not sure it would make much of a difference at this point.
The novelty around the game's launch is gone and hardly anyone cares anymore.

I have to imagine that both EA and Microsoft have special deals with Valve in terms of revenue share. Obviously Valve doesn't want Steam without all the major publishers, and it's good to see that effort.

But, for the same reason, I'd imagine Epic has a big deal with Ubi.

These are all just wild guesses, of course.

The game is 3 bucks on UPlay right now, if your so tied to steam your willing to pay the regular price than good on you, but that's crazy to me.

30% of $3 for steam aint much. Uplay will still be a req regardless if you load it through steam or egs

It is not a black and white situation, people have varying degrees of interest in games. I have a mild interest in it but not enough to buy it on uplay. If for example it was 6€ on steam i would have bought it there.

And nothing changed.
Game is on Uplay and EGS and can be played just fine and also bought for cheap.
Nothing was lost.

And then you would have had to launch it through uplay anyway.

I don't really care or even see the point. The last couple of Ubi games I bought were just cheap/on sale Uplay keys. When the games require Uplay anyway, I personally don't go for the dual launcher option - The same goes for EA games, when I buy an EA game once every two-three years I just grab a cheap Origin key.

"Why sell my brand of orange juice at Wallmart and pay them a cut when I can sell it on my own corner shops and keep all the money?"

Not a good analogy, it would be more like a brand of juice that has the money to build its own juice stores and have people come to it.

IMO they should really go for it and stop releasing even Assassin's Creed on Steam... I bet such a big franchise would really make people more willing to go to their storefront (and also EGS, as their cut is way smaller). I don't think there's a justifiable reason for Steam to take 30%, it's not the same situation as console manufacturers, so publishers are being smart by looking for alternatives.

I have EGS, Uplay, Origin and Steam installed and I get the games I want to play on the store where I need to get them or where they are cheapest. It literally matters 0% what program you open to start a game

200,000 people who bought metro on steam launch disagree with you but yeah "just another launcher".

It does to me when EGS is run by Tim Sweeney. But EGS and Bethesda's abomination are the only ones I'll never touch. I use Steam, Uplay, Origin and GOG - no problem.

People can do whatever they want but there is no logical reason outside of "game was cheaper in store X" or MAYBE "for some reason store X literally doesn't work for me" to buy a game on one store over another. everything is just "personal preference" which ultimately means nothing objectively.

edit: i'll bow out of the thread though, EGS bad etc...

We might see more developers take the metro approach after the success. Epic pays you for exclusivity, they can launch on their own site and then a year plus down the road launch on steam and get even more sales.

Of course it could never be the fact that Steam has features that people find valuable.

So here's the situation. Despite the fact that Metro Exodus was available on EGS for a year and despite the fact that its price during the EGS holiday sale was less than half of the game's launch price on Steam, at least 200,000 people chose to spend more money and buy it on Steam instead of spending less money and getting the game much sooner on EGS. It's not logical to assume that so many people just enjoy throwing their money away. The logical assumption is that there has to be some logical reason for it that you are simply unable to understand.
