The thing about 3D Land and 3D World, and as well as the Galaxy games, is that they were, in a way, Nintendo's vain attempts at making 3D Mario sell like 2D Mario. Mario 64 and Sunshine (to a lesser extent) sold well, but they didn't exactly do the crazy numbers Nintendo had previously received with the 2D installments. This can especially be seen in when looking at sales figures in Japan.

Our own Emily Rogers wrote an article prior to 3D World's release that chronicles Nintendo's desire to bring the crowd that was buying the NSMB games into the 3D space. Galaxy was the game that began this initiative, streamlining the level design to focus more on Point A to Point B platforming instead of exploration. Galaxy 2 made the stages even more linear and some versions of the game even came with a weird tutorial video, which was intended to instruct the lesser experienced NSMB players how to run around in 3D. Then 3D Land came along and went full on 2D Mario-esque, and 3D World built on that.

To me, Mario Odyssey kind of feels like Nintendo raising the white flag, finally realizing that no matter what they do, 3D Mario just won't do those NSMB numbers they've always wanted...hell, not even the recent NSMB games have been doing those numbers. The Galaxy games and the 3D ____ games sold well, but still sold typical 3D Mario numbers (5- 12 million), whereas 2D Mario games at one point were selling like 20-30 million each. So instead, they just opted to make a Mario game that embraced the strengths of 64/Sunshine without any compromises.
