Well, some of them didn't ignore it entirely.

This is what happens when you type 'thq' into Youtube:

Yeah.

KlDlAiJ.jpg

The first video is actually defending THQ AMA and blames the "Journos" for making a story out of it.
Garbage human.

It really does feel like the only person doing actual journalism in the industry is Jason Schreier.

Everyone else is doing personality driven gaming content because it's 1) profitable and 2) easier to manage a working relationship with companies.

I understand how fucked up this whole situation is as far as hosting the AMA on that site is and their hopeless response afterwards, but...how are Nazis involved? Is 8chan an alt right haven? Edit: nevermind, skimmed the part where you said they engaged in alt right discussion. Well that's fucked up, then. I have to assume the Easy Allies would have been more severe if they knew that.

Google THQ Nordic and look what you get.

Since the games media now apparently letting pedophile adjacents off the hook constitute a vast majority, the most effective option may be to highlight those who actually stuck their neck out in perpetuity. What you're dealing with is such mass apathy and mass forgetfulness from a crowd which simply will not remember who did what a couple of news cycles from now, if they're even aware already. I'm just spitballing, but if someone were to maintain an ongoing ethical review (a real one) of journalistic sources on this platform, noting that X publication stayed silent on Y issue whereas Z correctly condemned THQ's excuses as fucking bullshit, and so forth, it would help to keep the history alive. One might also include lists of each site's advertisers in there, Sleeping Giants style, such that readers can choose whether to support the anti-pedophile outlets' sponsors, or the rest.

I seen a video on this and this is my take on the real objective.
I am sure they knew what they where getting into, the thing is however, start a controversy, later apologize for it, have your brand talked about for weeks (i/e this thread for example) to increase the amount of people that know of them.

And yet, he hasn't covered this, and Kotaku's coverage was pretty bad.

People like Imran Khan and Patrick Klepek have utterly shown him up on this topic.

Wow, saying that complaining about White Supremacy and Child Porn ties is "Drama". That really shows what kind of person you are.

I agree with the OP but also the last thing I want is 8chan to get promotion/exposure on a lot of platforms causing people who don't know what that is to accidentally search for it and stumble upon it.

they'd have to go out of there way to find it because it's delisted, instead they'd find more information about what it is and not so much the actual content they host.

That story will follow them now and all their entities. Medias event, public apparence and every annoncement will be an offered opportunity of individual sabotage and collective vandalism. If it stays fun and understandable, it could be someway harmful.

It was sad listening to the Easy Allies response. They basically mentioned what happened and called it a big whoopsie, shrugged their shoulders, and literally said that it would blow over.

I love these guys, but they can definitely pull towards optimism a little too hard sometimes.
I feel the same way about Vinny on the beastcast. I usually like the optimism, but these extreme far right people regularly take advantage of people like that, and they end up aiding the people I know they do not want to aid.

Other than that, you have Jeff Bakalar, whose cynically low expectation of people's intelligence leads him to easily believe it was just an oopsie and doesn't care enough to look further into it.

Abby and Alex, who do seem to understand how fucked up and intentional it is, but for whatever reason failed to make any indictments or connections on anything beyond the one marketing guy, and don't push back that much on vinny and jeff giving them an out.

And finally there's Dan Ryckert, who didn't say a word, most likely because he just doesn't care to engage with topics like that in general.

Individually, I don't think any of them are being super toxic about this, but taken together it's a depressing picture of how something like this just goes by with nothing but a 5 minute discussion an hour and a half into the podcast and probably only mentioned in an occasional joke and in a negative award category at the end of the year.

Maybe they had no idea what 8chan is, because they don't sit 24/7 on the internet. Before this incident I had no idea either.

That's no excuse. If they didn't they should have researched.
It's the same with other PR social media accounts. If you're unsure don't tweet it or use some hashtag. It's basic responsibility of a PR person.

I'm not usually a boycott kind of dude but I'm pretty disgusted by this. Their steps are simple. Fire their PR guy and anyone who was associated with the decision. Issue an apology. Maybe donate to a cause that helps fight the sort of trash that happens on 8chan. After that, Maybe I might consider support of a game they are involved with.

I can forgive but only if a lesson is learned and a recompense is dispensed.

I sadly need to echo this sentiment.

I've been a patron since day 1, and this was possibly the worst take from them I've seen.

EZA is pure hype and happiness, which is why I like them so much, but if they aren't going to give the proper weight and consideration to these sorts of topics they shouldn't cover them at all.

As much as THQ Nordic should be called out for what they did. It's better they get very little coverage of what they did , last thing I want is that site they went for ama getting more exposure out of this situation.

THQ should let go of their PR manager and post a statement. Also these things should go through upper management approval in the future.

The gaming media I'm not really concerned about tbh I'm more concerned about console devs and other big time publishers not doing jack shit about it. The big three AND Valve should be cutting off all THQ Nordic products but they haven't yet. That's what's really going to hurt the company in the long run.
I couldn't say nothing. I was getting seriously agitated over thq leaving the tweet up for 12 hours. Someone high up in xbox told them to take it down and I'm grateful for that.

That said they all should be doing way more than that.

Thq's actions is very damaging for everyone participating in gaming culture whether you support their ama or not.

Something I personally wish in regards to this, since it's unfortunately clear that THQ Nordic is trying to just sweep this under the rug at this point, would be that video games media would personally use this as an opportunity to really flex their muscles and use what little influence they have here. Completely refuse to cover or review any games that fall under the THQ Nordic umbrella until those responsible are terminated. No reviews, no pre-release content or stories, no re-hosted trailers or screenshots, just flat-out nothin' till those responsible are gone.

Like, y'know how certain publishers blacklist certain parts of the gaming press and all that? Like how Bethesda blacklisted Kotaku for how they leaked information regarding Fallout 4 before it was formally unveiled? Just do that, but as a unified mass, right back at THQ Nordic to do what little they can to make sure they ditch these people.

Of course, I understand why that won't happen. Because it's basically a prisoner's dilemma type of situation. And so, even if any individual site has the idea to do something like that, they start to worry that even if they reach out to other sites and get them to say their on board as well, the worry would be that those other sites might not be telling the truth and might not follow through, and so in the end they'd just be losing traffic to the sites that do cover it, and everyone ends up having those same fears of each other, and so nothing ends up happening at all because lost traffic becomes the primary concern.

And then of course you also have the "think of the developers" argument, and of course it's true that it fucking sucks that so many innocent developers are caught up in this whole mess when they have nothin' to do with it at all and are no doubt just as frustrated by it as anyone. But as far as that goes, protests unfortunately don't come without risks, as that what gives them power to begin with and that's clearly what THQ is counting on here, for people to just think about the developers and be too afraid and hesitant to do anything because they very understandably don't want to even risk hurting completely innocent individuals.

But god damn, would I like to see that happen. I understand perfectly why it won't happen. I get that, as I've explained. But damn would I still love to see the blacklisting tactic thrown back at a publisher's face for once, for a situation that most certainly deserves. It get why it won't. But I really, really wish it would. Of course, to be clear, I ideally wish none of this would have happened in the first place, and failing that, since it did, I wish THQ could have just gotten rid of those people on their own without needing any motivation or incentives but since it seems like both of those are done and gone, that would be the next best scenario to me, and though I perfectly understand why it won't happen, I wish games media would find the courage to take that step.

Edit: And just to add on to this, I know that I'm just a complete nobody and as such, it's easy for me to say things like this, precisely because I'm not the one who has anything on the line here, so it's real easy for me to say. And that makes me feel really guilty just by even bringing this kinda stuff up and makes me tempted to just delete this. But at the same time, that's what it's really about, just feeling so powerless, when I see a situation like this that's wrong and having no power to fix it myself and so just wishing the people that did have power, however little and risky it is to use that power, to nonetheless use it to do the right think and try to make a difference where people like me cannot. And I know that itself isn't exactly my place to ask such a thing, since I have no right to ask that of anyone, but I don't know what to do in these situations other than to just try and well yeah, I'm definitely just ranting now and not sure if I'm even making sense anymore, so I'll leave it at that.

I am so sick of game companies being given free passes for shitty things that don't directly affect the games themselves.

It's already bad enough that Atlus is going to get away with treating the LGBT community like shit but this just makes me even more depressed.

lol that is not how things work. They knew what they where doing. They wanted the negative publicly to spread like wildfire so people talk about them. This means more name reconignzion. You see it right here, why was this thread made? Because they did something average or good? no one would care. But make negitive buzz? wildfire spreading free avertisment.

That's why they almost never cover anything political. What's the point in coverage, if there is only one side of the story? THQ Nordic fucked up, they shouldn't have done that. State what they did, why it was bad and move on with it. They (as well as most sites listen in OP) are not investigative journalists, or even journalists at all (IIRC, easy allies don't call themselves journalists). Leave the serious journalism to people who are actually doing it. What should be disappointing is current state of Kotaku's coverage of it.

them giggling over child pornography was certainly a thing. I don't think serious topics are their forté, they're more the "christmas morning all year long!"-type of crowd. every time they try to tackle news like this, I like them a little less.

What did Kotaku do wrong? Is this the story people are objecting to? It reads like a story from someone who had to do stupid fucking write up of a story that was constantly changing and already being lambasted all over Twitter. I guess it's not the best story ever, but eh.

What astounded me is, that if they are to be believed, the PR person didn't visit the site before agreeing to do it.

I mean this isn't some teeny tiny one man developer, but the big company that is growing into a massive AAA studio.

Surely anyone agreeing to do an AMA on any site would check out the said site first just by visiting it, even if it's briefly. You step foot on 8Chan and it is readily clear that it's not your typical site.

It baffles me :O

Oh, on topic I saw plenty of big sites mention the overall situation on Twitter like Games Industry and Waypoint, Kotaku and others.
